Don't forget going back to the 70s, the Ulster Workers Council and Official IRA/Sinn Fein could be argued to have shared an ideological link where both promoted worker's rights through trade unions. With that as a basis of general understanding and agreement i'd be surprised if there wasn't dialogue taking place then.
