Thank you Sandy for an enjoyable video, it is great to see so many people out, over life time of using stoves the are the one piece of your kit that will let you down, in the past any stove that needed to be pressurized with a pump would let you down then you had to field strip it, the new stoves today are better with pressurized gas cylinders they are much more reliable, but the cost is high, 10$ to 12$ for 1 cylinder, plus the weight plus even when empty you have to pack them out with you. now that I am on a fixed income, I use a Trangia, best bang for your buck ,less bulk less noise, less cost.
There are more stove types than there is people in the world....I, like many, have more than I ever need. Gas, alcohol, wood, white fuel, petrol, diesel, gel, hex etc etc. Which one do I keep going back to and have used for over 30 years in all environments? A trangia burner! The triangle is good, you can get or make a small trivet etc. There are many options. The silence is a key value for me, especially when wild camping, I want to hear what’s going on. It’s reliable, easy to use etc. I wouldn’t change a thing Sandy.
Agree on the alcohol stove, I splashed out on an evernew stove a few years back and love it. Good trick with the Batchelors pasta bag, will have to give that a try.
Way to go guys! Spectacular views Sandy! Like the gear too! Gas/alcohol - depends on the situation, safety, & convenience. Thank you for sharing your adventure, nicely done!!
Fantastic as always Sandy what a wonderful country we live in i cant wait to follow you on your big walk its going to be epic God bless take care and stay safe.
Great vid guys.the answer to your question is easy Meths stove.i used my mini trangia for years.going to try my new alpkit gasstove small and lightweight.but I think I will be ilke you mate miss it.
Love your videos, Sandy. They're so relaxing. I think my all-time favourite is the one where you and Funky stayed in the West Kennet Longbarrow. I always remember that one (although it may have been a Funky Prepper upload!) Keep it up!
I've always enjoyed Mackerel fillets in Tuna - that taste of the sea.....one of my favourites... Fresh air, blue sky and nature is good for the heart and brain. Soon you'll be fit enough to walk across the Great Sandy Desert. And then it's off to Sandy Cape Light House for another great walk in nature.
That was a nice shake-down camp, Sandy. I think Joe has great sense in not liking heights, I get dizzy if I sit on a high stool ! I'm looking forward to seeing your videos about the Coast to Coast Walk. All the best, Pete
I did this walk around 1974, Never saw a soul up or down unlike now crowds of people taking selfies chatting away, Ben Nevis much the same, In peek season the walkers are marshalled so as to release small numbers at a time, A far cry from Wainwright time spent wondering far from the maddening crowd, By the way most of my kit came from Army and Navy store!Nice stream Thankyou!!
Nice little outing Sandy 👍🏻 thanks for talking us along. Stove wise, go with whatever you feel most comfortable with. Good to see you today, nice to catch up.
Thanks Sandy, another lovely video. I'm like Joe, I love being up high but can't stand near the edge! I walked up Pen-y-fan a while ago. It was out of season so much quieter. Wet and cloudy but was an amazing feeling actually walking up through the clouds! I don't like gas stoves. I get that they are light-weight and fast but they are also totally crap in any kind of wind at all and just don't feel as reliable as a good old trangia. Each to their own I guess. ATB, Mark.
Brecon Beacons are such a treasure. I drove through there June 1 2018. Unfortunately just saw them from the car, but what beauty. If I'm ever back in the UK that's the place I want to revisit more than anywhere.
Jeez it's like Piccadilly circus up in them hills nowadays, that's the joy of winter hiking, adverse weather conditions and almost no people about for miles. Good footwear those Merrel ventilators Sandy, I've worn mine practically everyday for about 7-8 years now, comfortable and the wide sole is very stable underfoot.
Great vid Sandy. Absolutely love this area. You pretty much did the walk I mentioned to you a few weeks back. Glad you like the rucksack. I thought you would like it when I recommended it to you when we spoke when I was last out on the moors with Si. For the big hike go with your Trangia set up as per this vid. It has never failed you before and is still low in weight and bulk. Must catch up soon, Ant 👍🏻😉
Thanks Ant, Hopefully the walk is only a few days away now. Got some last minute plans and things to get. The new kit is the way forward. I reckon my base weight will be somewhere around 7.5kg. Hope to see you when I get back:)
Spirit burner every time, its silent and a more natural flame. its actually a pleasure to watch it working away, well worth the small time penalty. just my opinion. great video too by the way.
Sandy, buy the larger size neo air, they are wider. You can cut the end off and seal it shut with a hot iron if you don't want the extra weight,, or do what I do and fold the top over to form a pillow ( use your belt to hold it folded). Spent years trying to find a light pillow, this one works for me.
You buddy are amazing that's some walk. I thoroughly enjoy these vid, s with kit being used in field and stunning scenery. Good luck with Wainwright's I have no doubt you will do it. All the best look after yourself. Regards Tony
I always stop what I'm doing to catch one of your videos Sandy. Breathtaking views, good company -- Joe. I share Joe's respect for heights. Sounds like a good one coming up.
All I could see after Joe's stove demo were trail shoes and trails winding away in the distance. Them shoes were meant for walking Sandy. A fine test and camp up top there. It is grand! All the best with the Coast to Coast. Mark.
Great to see you out camping. I'll give you a heads up for the first section of the C2C. When descending from Dent down to Nannycatch beck, the hill is a bit steep down. I'm originally from that part of Cumbria, Dent being easy access as well as Ennerdale. I'm now living in the North East, not far from the C2C end sections (Richmond to Robin Hoods Bay). Happy camping and all the best for the walk.
It's great to be out on the trail but I shy from places with so many people. As far as the stoves go, I have learned to always go with reliability over speed. A fast stove is no benefit if you can't rely on it EVERY time. Love the vids!
Another nice video. It is quite shocking just how overcrowded this planet is. I don't spend much time vacationing in and around UK beauty spots anymore, because everywhere is so busy. Even when I went to the far north of Scotland in October about three years ago, campsites were busy and people were clogging up the roads in their motorhomes and caravans. Personally I prefer spirit stoves, because of their simplicity. I used to use a petrol stove (Colman): travelling as I do on a motorcycle, it is easy and convenient to access the fuel supply of the motorcycle to fill the stove when needed. However I find the spirit stove is more pleasant to use and gives better heat control when cooking.
Another enjoyable video Sandy. Recon you got it sorted with that new bit of kit, no stopping you now. Personally I would take both of those stoves along, not a lot extra weight. and the benefit would be worth it in my opinion. Looking forward to your wainwright coast to coast, have all of Julia Bradburys Wainwright walks videos, really enjoyable, cheers.
Some excellent new kit there. The new pack looks of beautiful design. Certainly is a stunning part of the world. We had an interesting Father’s Day camp, rained the entire time. Still it was great to be out. Stoves, well if your on a longer mission. I’d likely take meths purely for reliability . My thoughts are you can carry plenty of fuel & source fuel easily. There are no moving parts to break or jam so to speak. Good luck with the walk Sandy. It sounds epic. Very much inspired by you. All the best Andy
Hi Sandy, if you carry both stoves that would be the best option. If not i would take an alcohol stove so you could burn wood in it if you have too. Then at least you would have a pot stand.
My knees were getting weak and shaky watching Joe walk out to the edge of that cliff. I am very opposed to heights myself and I could easily imagine how he was feeling as he approached the edge. Some of the worst nightmares that I have ever have been related to my fear of heights. My feet belong on solid ground and not near any edges of tall places LOL!!!!!!!! In my mind people that have no fear of heights are just crazy. (Not really) A beautiful hike Sandy and thanks so much for always being willing to take the camera along and sharing it with us. And my vote for what stove you should take would be a meths stove because of the weight factor and they work very well at pretty much all elevations and temperatures as long as you can shield them from the wind. Enjoy yourself out there my friend.
Nice one thank you for sharing , had a not so nice day at work today your video realy cheared me up thank you, got a great screen print of you opening the tent up in the morning will be using that as a desk top . Happy Trails ;)
That's beautiful country Sandy, thanks for sharing it with us! I haven't used your type of stove yet, but from what I gather, it's probably more reliable than the gas stove which I use and have had issues with when it gets cold. 👍
Fantastic Sandy. What amazing views. Sensitive subject with the burners but for me its Gas every time. Can’t be bothered to measure and carry the meths also very little adjustment for simmering on my Trangia burner.
Brilliant stuff Sandy. I was up there with the Mrs a few weeks ago. The scenery is stunning and you captured it perfectly. I have the Opsrey Levity and the older Exos 48. Both great packs but I wish they'd kept the hip belt pockets on the levity and the new exos. Good to see you up in the hills again. best wishes. Paul
That takes me back, over 15 years ago walking those same hills as a teenager with way too much kit and sub zero temperatures. One day I'll go again and do it in a more sensible manner.
I feel Joe's pain too. We got caught in a thick fog, visibility just a few metres and had to walk to the ridge on a compass bearing and hope for the best. Almost fell off the ridge as we didn't see it until we were right on top of it.
Enjoyed your video, thank you for taking us with you. I have just purchased the same tent (2man version) for me and the dog. Nice tip with the pasta bag, I have purchased a couple of dehydrated meals but yet to use them, think the fish and pasta , or fish and cous cous or nooodles will be nicer. Lovely area you guys camped in. Looking forward to your next adventure ...
Love what you do Wiltshire Man*Thank you for sharing*Sending best wishes*I have also discovered you are a very talented man-truly amazing craftsmanship*
Nice Hike .. thanks 👍😊. Meths for me .. anytime. Cheap as chips and available almost anywhere. I can use it in my Trangia Burner, White Box, Penny Pepsi Can, Cat Food Tin, Tee Lite Stoves .. even a little Whiskey Metal Screw Top for gentle simmering .. very versatile. Speed of use .. I'm never in that much of a rush. Take care .. looking forward to your next outing 😊.
Nice one Sandy haven't been up the fan for over 30yrs think 8 should introduce Rowan to it soon. On stoves I've never used or liked Meths but recently made a Fancy Feast stove ( cat food and tomato paste tin) that's actually quite impressive also dosnt need a pot stand as its built in just need a light foil wind shield . Certainly better than a coke can penny stove etc easy light and no waiting to flare up properly like a white box.. catch you soon Duncan
I spent a lot of time in younger life up there doing gorge walking its an amazing area looks like you took some weather I don't remember haha. Glad you went for some nice new gear. Thanks for sharing.
Another great vid. Looking forward to the Coast to Coast. I fancy doing it East to West so it ends in the Lakes. But like the Ridgeway, finishing at Avebury. Enjoy
Sandy, ditch the Laser for the coast to coast, look at the MLD solomid or Duomid shelters. I own both, great bits of kit, they pack down to nothing, and weigh even less 🙂
Cracking Sandy. Very interested in to see how the quilt goes. I use gas in the warmer months and meths in the winter when gas pressures can be affected by temps. Good luck on the Coast to Coast. Will be following. Have done Hadrians wall but the C-C is in the list. Just getting over Total Knee Replacement so hope to be back out walking the hills in a few months. Cheers.
Great vid Sandy. Gas v alcohol stove? Both work great but you can't beat cooking on a Trangia. I brought myself the Firebox Nano gen2 from The Bushcraft Store online the other week and its great. Folds down so small and it's designed to hold the Trangia burner. Also if you ever run out of fuel you can burn wood / sticks etc. on it. In fairness though you probably could with the Trangia Triangle (never tried it).
I prefer the trangia, with the gas you are always shaking the canister trying to guess how much fuel is left also those merell Moabs are great very comfortable I’ve done a ton of hiking including the west highland way with zero blisters.
Thanks for the video. I can empathise with trying to reduce the weight. I have just bought a Vango F10 UL1 1.2 kg with the idea of doing my first 1 night camp. I haven't camped for 30 years and winter may not be the best the time but I need to go for it as I am not getting any younger, 66 now. I did a training hike yesterday carrying 17kg and this will the maximum I will ever carry even on longer hikes with food, water etc. . Managed 11 miles Ok across the moors in the Peak District. I need to change my rucksack at it weighs in at 2.7kg. I really would like only 1 rucksack that will do for day hikes and camping too. Not sure it is possible. The Exos 48 looked a good option. I bought a Fire Maple stove when I lived in China and it has proved a really good stove.
There's a WW2 Wellington Bomber crash site not far off the route you took at Waun Rydd - much of the wreckage is still there, plus a memorial to the Canadian crew who sadly lost their lives. It's quite a harrowing location, especially on a wet and foggy day, but good to see that many still visit to pay their respects to this day. All the best with the Coast to Coast - sounds like quite an epic adventure!
superb walk with great weather and views. i've heard good things about that osprey.. hope it works out well. i'd stick with the meths and if you have time make yourself a little burner (fancy feast?) and that'll bring your weight down even more. you can't fill them as much as your trangia so if you're looking to do long cook times probably best to stay as is.. but if it's just for boiling water the DIY version is the way to go (10=12g).
Wonderful walk, no way could I stand on that cliff. I’m interested in why the countryside is devoid of trees, I’m used to seeing thick forested country. Has it been cleared for farming or because of the altitude trees don’t grow.
Thanks for the video. I'm have ordered a tent same design as Joe's but a bit larger. One kilo minus the pegs and trekking poles. As for stoves, much of a muchness really. I use both although I normally go for the convenience and take the gas cannister stove with a small cannister. That's plenty lightweight enough for a night. The meths stoves are okay, but sometimes I just can't be bothered. Call me impatient!
Nice job Sandy, hope the others took their litter home with them too, Ref: your coming solo trek and stoves, me! belt & braces, meths & gas, best be safe than sorry :) Take care.........Les
Hi Sandy Great video. Thank you. You have inspired me to hope to do the coast to coast one day (virus permitting). Could you please explain your triangia stove set up? What is the windshield? Rgds Imran
For boiling water gas stoves are great but the gentler heat and larger flame from a meths stove is better for cooking food without burning it. Like you I think meths stoves have more soul than noisy gas ones.
Amazing views Sandy. Very lucky with the weather. I had also thought about getting the osprey pack for the WHW. Was going to go for the bigger size to make sure I can get the tent packed inside. Good luck on the coast to coast. I had planned to do it next year. Can’t wait to hear how you get on. ATB. Bill.
I will do a video Bill. I think I shall be OK. Just going to take my time and enjoy it:) Have ordered a Lanshan one for the weight saving and packability.
Hope your Lanshan arrives from China soon. Mine took ages. Great tents though. As you know condensation on mine was bad but the Decathlon microfibre towel got most of it off before striking camp. I’ll have a chat with Andy and gets some dates in the diary for a wildcamp with you and hopefully Joe too.
Always look forward to Ur videos..... thanks for taking time out to share them with us 👍 Regards hydration food.... Think Ur onto something, I've played around with cleaned out mountain house packs. Gas v Meths I personally love my trangia, however whatever set up you use always take into account of extra bit , windshields, handle plates to rest hot burner on . Coz the grams add up
A good outing in the central Beacons. I wish you well with the Coast to Coast walk, Sandy. Cribyn looks to have become more popular than it used to be... Good to see more people getting out, though. All the best.
Where do you men get your strength and endurance....inspiration to us all. Brilliant video and journey. Thanks for sharing Sandy and Joe

Beautiful scenery, great upload thanks Sandy.

Well done Joe! It's not easy, to conquer a fear of heights.
Love your videos, Sandy. They're so relaxing. I think my all-time favourite is the one where you and Funky stayed in the West Kennet Longbarrow. I always remember that one (although it may have been a Funky Prepper upload!) Keep it up!

I'm with Joe on that whole standing on the edge thing. Nope! So many great places to have a wing. Nice!
Im like you Tony. Scared of heights:)) Unless I got a wing above me. Then it's OK:)
Lovely to see.. Looking forward to the Coast to Coast.. that'll be beautiful!

Certainly better than a coke can penny stove etc easy light and no waiting to flare up properly like a white box.. catch you soon Duncan
A really great video sandy ! Great capture of the Brecon beacons .great new kit !
I spent a lot of time in younger life up there doing gorge walking its an amazing area looks like you took some weather I don't remember haha. Glad you went for some nice new gear. Thanks for sharing.
Just had to pause and give Joe some props for pushing out of his comfort zone on that rock ledge. Good stuff, that.
Go with the meths stove.
Joe did well. He's a top bloke too.
I'm with Joe!! I wouldn't get on the rock point, love the new pack!!!
Cheers.
Gareth I hope you are able to return to long distance walking after the knee op. Thats a big one.
Good video to watch, thanks....
My worst nightmare to be with and see so many muggles. Gear looks nice 👍🏻
Very nice. Great spot.
The diving board up fan y big has a great view if the weather is good, you were really lucky, great vid as usual
Wonderful walk, no way could I stand on that cliff. I’m interested in why the countryside is devoid of trees, I’m used to seeing thick forested country. Has it been cleared for farming or because of the altitude trees don’t grow.
Go on .. pronounce it as ‘fannybig’ and have a chuckle - lovely vid - and great to see you enjoying wales 🏴
Hi Sandy
Great video. Thank you. You have inspired me to hope to do the coast to coast one day (virus permitting).
Could you please explain your triangia stove set up? What is the windshield?
Rgds
Imran
Beautiful area, wonderful trip. All the best to Sandy.
Thanks Abe, it's a lovely area. Too many people at times though. Give me solitude!!
Always look forward to Ur videos..... thanks for taking time out to share them with us 👍
Regards hydration food.... Think Ur onto something, I've played around with cleaned out mountain house packs.
Gas v Meths
I personally love my trangia, however whatever set up you use always take into account of extra bit , windshields, handle plates to rest hot burner on .
Coz the grams add up
I think the stove is a personal preference depending on your personal needs and experience.
A good outing in the central Beacons. I wish you well with the Coast to Coast walk, Sandy. Cribyn looks to have become more popular than it used to be... Good to see more people getting out, though. All the best.
Hi Olly, yes it's good for the nations health. I guess with it being a weekend more people about. Think I will go midweek next time.
Great video sandy and nice new peices of kit 👍
Fantastic! I really enjoyed it felt like I was there.
