I am planning to visit Florence with my wife in two years. If the world hasn't come to an end, this event is certainly near the top of our list of things to see.
“Ey honey, I’m hanging out with the boys and a bunch of italian guys for something called “historic soccer” or something. Sounds fun. Be back for dinner”. “Ok Hank, have fun!. See you later”.
This looks great! I honestly thought we British invented it but our version was later - when we used to play "Football" you would just have to get the ball from one end of the town to the other, sometimes 100's of players (one towns men VS anothers), no rules all punching, biting and wrestling - more a "running of the bull" than this with its arena and net, but we must have got the general idea from the Florentines! Great stuff, I hope to visit Florence one day and see this!
I don't think this game is barbaric and respect how history is being kept alive. However, from a pure sports perspective, this game has changed A LOT in the last 20 years. If you watch matches from 1986, 1994 or even as recently as 2004, the game included a lot more ball movement, passing and a lot more grappling and wrestling instead of punching. Kind of like no rules rugby. These days it seems like it's basically turned into a street fight with very little ball movement and passing. It seems like the strategy has moved towards waiting to move the ball forward until your teammates have injured enough of the opposing players to do so. I don't mind violence, but I prefer watching the older matches to the more recent ones. I've just become aware of this tournament and have been going back and watching matches from the past and present. Is there anyone that can shed some light on this topic? I know very little. Thanks.
Probably because in recent years here in Florence people started practicing more MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing because they became popular. I practice MMA here in Florence.
@@obiwanfisher537 So would I. The recent games look very conservative, with the team winning the opening ball holding it in their backfield without taking chances for many minutes. Idk but i think you gotta earn the respect from the citizen that plays to play with them cause should be just people born in florence that can play it, i'm from south italy so i can't tell onestly.
Why not start a club where you are? In the 1980s Amaretto di Saronno held a tournament in North America over two years (Columbus Day weekends) to select a team to play with them in Florence. The entries were rugby clubs and they played, not the game you see here, but a cross between Rugby Union, team handball, and Canadian football. Unfortunately the year they crowned the American champion (Old Blue RFC from the Bronx, NY), the mayor banned the game in Florence, where it's been banned and brought back several times.
Rugby was invited on the grounds of the Rugby school in England but Calcio what you call soccer was indeed Invented in Italia there are official records to prove this claim. Calcio was reserved for rich aristocrats who played every night between Epiphany and Lent. Even popes, such as Clement VII, Leo XI and Urban VIII played the sport in Vatican City. The games could get violent as teams vied to score goals. A variation of Calcio Fiorentino was most likely played in the 15th century as well, as a match was organized on the Arno river in 1490, notable as a day so cold the waters were completely frozen. On another famous occasion, the city of Florence held a match on February 17, 1530, in defiance of the imperial troops sent by Charles V, as the city was under siege. In 1574 Henry III of France attended a game of "bridge fighting" - put on in his honor during a visit to Venice. The king is recorded as saying: "Too small to be a real war and too cruel to be a game".

Each side has a goal spanning the entire line above the wall and below the net, and you can get the ball into it by any means, including diving over the wall with it. However, if your shot (even if deflected) goes over the net, it's half a goal for the defending side. Teams change ends after every score. It's 27 a side, no substitutes. The start and restarts (after goals and if the ball becomes unplayable after a tackle or going over a side wall) are by an official's throwing the ball up, with each side behind the line of where it's thrown. You can't kick someone in the head, you can't attack 2-on-1 or in immediate sequence, and I think it's possible to get thrown out at the referee's discretion. From what I've seen, the team controlling the ball from a throw-up usually takes it back to their side and starts a weave in their backfield, threatening alternately left and right while their forwards try to knock out the opposition by punching, grappling, or kicking, until the side with the ball sees an advantage somewhere and starts a rush. It looks very much like American football slowed down a lot and with no holds barred and no restriction on forward passes.

However, if we narrow down to the difference of soccer and rugby, they are hardly the same nor is their history the same. The history of this Florentine game here probably derived from the Roman harpastum, which in turn, probably derived from the ancient Greek game, phaininda. The rules are allowing the person to pick the ball up with their hands and run, also violently take them down with tackles or anyway possible. Where does the history of soccer show that one can play by those similar rules? I see a similarity in this video more with rugby than soccer. Seems to me that you have no idea about the difference between rugby history and soccer history, nor the difference between their rules.

By the rules you can't hit a man on the ground, but you can block him down and, with 27 players for team in a relatively small field, you have to clear the field of much of the opposing players in order to score. That's the reason of all the fights. Mind that the match lasts for 50 minutes in scorching hot without pauses or substitutons, that's why exhausted players blocked that way often don't fight to get back up, loosing further energies, but rest a little until the next change of ball.
the final match comes for St. Giovanni (Ioannes) that is 24 of June of everyyear and will be disputed in Santa Croce Square :) while the 2 SemiFinals are disputed 1/2 weeks before :)

welcome to Italy
This isn't a sport. This is a prison yard brawl.
I would dare the All Blacks to play this and survive... scary...
they would take over and destroy this sport like the others.
meh, i will not be so sure.
Looks good and a lot of fun !
why no submissions
YOU AIN'T SHIT UNLESS YOU ENTER THE PIT.....Italians have the most passion in Europe! Thank you Moors!
FINALLY A Sport in the world as tough and rough as our
Hockey..
I think there are many tougher sports than hockey like rugby but that doesn't have to lose its charm
This is a Renaissance version of soccer… do u use "barbarian" word to describe florence history, our history?...sorry my friend you're wrong…may it could be violent…use a correct word next time.
This is a tradition for them they played 3 matches each year
3:29,that nose is the price of this game i guess
Why do the 'players' sit on the guys?
By the rules you can't hit a man on the ground, but you can block him down and, with 27 players for team in a relatively small field, you have to clear the field of much of the opposing players in order to score. That's the reason of all the fights. Mind that the match lasts for 50 minutes in scorching hot without pauses or substitutons, that's why exhausted players blocked that way often don't fight to get back up, loosing further energies, but rest a little until the next change of ball.
I'm going to Italy!
A city for whose team played Gabriel Batistuta-Batigol.
Vamos Batigol!!! :D :D
Draymond green should think about trying this out. With any strike allowed he would be dropping guys left and right with his low blows.
fucking love this should be worldwide sport
i wish i was twenty again, looks awsome.
come guys in florence and you'll see even me for the green neighborhood
