This was a monster of a game to condense into a single video like this, so please give a massive thanks to my editor Cloé and send her support here twitter.com/xashtaricx . I love the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series and it was a huge nostalgia trip to relive the best one in the series. I don't think I'm going to stream the postgame as its monstrously long, but I want to tackle some of the special episodes later this year. I hope everyone enjoys the nostalgia and this video :)
Well, given that you'll need to do _some_ postgame to unlock the final special episode, you could cut the postgame off there if you desire. That episode is a must though, it rivals the main story finale in how good it is.

i remember i finished this game as a 7-year old on the plane on the way home from a vacation to Greece. Y'know, as a kid, I never realized how many red flags the guild had. -identification via feet pics -competition with other guildmates on bounties -90 percent of earnings for completing bounties go to the Guild -forced to smile and never complain
The worst part is that you still have to give 90 percent of your earning even after graduating from the guild. I know it's because they wanted to keep the game balance intact but the fact that they still take almost all your money after they stopped housing and feeding you seem really scummy.
@@wildfire9280 I remember doing that minigame any time I could to prepare for hard boss fights in the post game since it'd give you revive seeds. Good times
@@kristophesiem5336 The special episode "Bidoofs wish" is also a great place to farm reviver seeds, items, and money early. You can take an escape orb into star cave and then on the last floor use it. You keep all your items and money, and you can buy more escape orbs from Kecleon, so the cycle repeats. Scarves are also abundant in star cave, so you can sell those for even more money, then buy more reviver seeds from Kecleon.
Friendly reminder that this is a kid's game where you deal with basically the death of not one but two close friends while ACTUALLY saving the world and FEELING like you're actually doing it all the way through. So under-rated.
I remember that moment when Palkia suddenly showed up scared the hell out of me as a kid. Getting woken up in the middle of the night by a vengeful god who wants to end you
*plays game as a child and cries* "Man, that game sure was emotional. But surely as a big, tough grown-up, it wouldn't be nearly as bad." *replays game as an adult and cries even harder*
The craziest part about this whole playthrough was when Cloe said "It's editing time" and edited this entire game into less than three hours. Absolutely one of the moments of all time.
the guy ordering the cheri berry from the bottle in the beginning was actually grovyle…he was trying to prevent the paralysis of time it’s all connected guys
Look I don't have a crippling gummie addiction. I can continue the plot at any time! Just there's a set of missions in one dungeon that gives a big pile of rewards and gummies!
Explorers of Time was the first Pokémon I ever played when I was a kid, and even nowadays "Don't Ever Forget..." makes me a bit teary eyed and I'm not ashamed to say it. Truly a masterpiece of a game!
Same bro, even though i personally favor "In the Morning Sun" as it carrys all the weight of 3 People in their final moments talking to each other knowing they dont have much more time. Dusknoir trying to find reassurance that he did the right thing and Celebi&Grovyle just wanting to spend their last moments together. This entire last dialog is just an emotional bomb ticking down.
Explorers of Sky, in my opinion, is the best game of the entire Pokemon Franchise. Its story is legendary, its gameplay addicting, its characters unforgettable, and it has so much extra post-game content that the end of the main story might as well be only the half way point for the full story.
I used to wear a time gear necklace my sister gave to me for my 10th birthday, and once I turned 18 I got the full thing tattooed on the back of my neck! This game has had an IMPACT on me and I’ll never forget it as well
I'm hoping to get a time gear tattoo soon. I've alwaysed wanted a tattoo relating to pokemon but nothing outweight a timegear for me- even though a tattoo of my favourite pokemon would look nice, it's simplicity works well.
Fun fact: You can use wondermail to actually legitimately recruit a Primal Dialga. You can use a code that inserts the boss fight into Beach Cove and another that gives you an egg as a reward. And because an egg can give you any Pokémon in the dungeon, Primal Dialga is in that pool of Pokémon. There's some other steps to it because of how eggs work, but I think it's neat.
@@Corundrom What are you going to drop everything you are doing, go and grab your DS and jump on the game? All whilst keeping this page open and not just googling ‘Primal Dialga Wondermail Code’?
@@Corundrom Actually, the real problem is there's kind of more steps to it. There are two wondermail codes. One gives you a mission which gives you an egg as a reward. The other inserts the Primal Dialga fight into floor 4 of Beach Cove. An egg has a chance of giving you any Pokémon in the dungeon, and since you inserted Primal Dialga onto that floor, Primal Dialga is in the pool of Pokémon that can be in that egg. I more just think the TH-cam video is nice because it explains it well and has more details on why it works. (Like you can't pick up the oran berry on the first floor because then the egg will only have Pokémon from the first floor.) It's just a bit wordy to explain it all here. I chose an eevee for my first partner who has the ability Run Away, which makes them lose all control under half health so the coward thing was actually a factor for me
Honestly Pokémon has some really good fanfic and some of them are even based on Mystery Dungeons. Silver Resistance is a classic that any PMD fan should read.
@@wintersong2266 I mean, I won’t deny its well written, but I’m not sure it’s for everyone. I got, like, 50 chapters into it and nearly all I felt while reading it was sad. Maybe some people like that, and as I said, it’s not _badly_ written, but I prefer some levity between serious moments.
@@dumpingstirs1143 Then if you prefer some levity I would recommend Fledglings. Another Mystery Dungeon story about a Nidoran who found the last Legendary Pokémon in the world and goes on a seafaring adventure to protect it from an evil empire. Unlike most fanfiction that try the more realistic and darker setting to a Pokémon story this one really try to capture the feel of a good children book.
For people who enjoy this game's soundtrack, don't forget to check Arata Iiyoshi (one of this game's composers) works after he no longer worked for Chunsoft/PMD Series ! He made some amazing songs that carry a lot of a PMD vibe to them (such as Bridal Festival, and Claiomh Solais, both from the Fantascape Act 1 album), or a lot of the songs in his ETHNOPLEX album (although, for me, the long version of Bridal Festival takes the cake). You won't regret it !
The "Rise of Darkrai" movie also features a ton of amazing tracks that are incredibly reminiscent of the final chapter specifically. I actually had to check who got inspired by whom there, and with the release dates it's hard to tell. They also use similar instrumentation, which is adorable for the track on grass flute, and absolutely awe-inspiring when the bell tower playing in it is about the size of the Tower of Time. Just a shame that I haven't been able to find clean versions of those yet...
Whenever this game eventually gets a remake like Explorers DX, I can already tell it's going to be a fun and emotional time playing it with how they're going to remasters those certain scenes. Also, props to RT for managing to stream this game 5 days in a row and Cloe editing all the highlights together to make this nearly 3 hour video, all before Tears of the Kingdom comes out!
I'd much rather have this game being remade with an 2.5D artstyle like Octopath traveler. It fits the artstyle much better and is more timeless than 3d models
I remember playing this as a preteen, getting to the near end and bawling my eyes out, in emotional distress, and my sister walked in saying we have to go to the store for my mom, and i had to leave my DS on the charger at the scene of my partner returning to the guild. I sat in the car absolutely miserable the whole way to and back, and it still cracks me up thinking about it. Mystery Dungeon will forever be the best Pokémon series, and I'm mad we haven't gotten an entry since Super >:(
Having never seen anything of any Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, I want to say that this was awesome. I'm not crying, you're crying. I'm sobbing incoherently at the ending.

@@aQratorHaving played The original two games and super, super was significantly more fun, the gameplay was streamlined and perfected. The story was not as remotely as hard hitting, but still was serviceable. The massive tragedy however, was that the OST is the most forgettable OST I think I’ve ever heard from a Nintendo game, which is such a massive shame considering how phenomenal the first two games soundtracks are.
@Tech_Marauder that's actually a massively unpopular opinion, Super still has a top tier soundtrack. And I think it's story is leagues above Rescue Team too, not quite Sky level though

If you can find it, idk if it’s even possible anymore, Pokemon Conquest is by far the best game in the franchise, despite it not being mainstream or well known. Yes, I did grow up playing Mystery dungeon and had multiple play throughs of the game. Conquest is a pokémon game set in Feudal Japan, with the characters named after the shōguns that ruled the prefectures, and entire battlefields to fight with pokémon in a turn system, which is more realistic than other pokémon games. All in all, pokémon conquest is completely awesome because it subverts expectations by having revolutionary mechanics that mesh together perfectly to make a once in a lifetime experience, while still retaining a lot of charm through the graphics.
you can actually hear in RT's voice that he aint trying to cry. man this game gives me so many good memories and because RT played it i started replaying too. I love this game and it will always be one of the games i will always treasure
I got Treeco as my pokemon, so I was convinced that Grovyle was just the evolution of whatever pokemon you got. Took me watching someone else play to realize it was just a coincidence.
My first run on this game, I didn't cry but I still felt depressed by the ending. Although when I played the igglybuff episode, I cried harder than I did in years. The story is so good...
This is an absolute classic of a game. I personally believe it solos every other game that contains “Pokémon” in the title. No other game in the series has such a meaningful plot. When I was around 12, I was struggling a bit with mortality, and this game’s story actually affected the way I lived my life. It’s an incredibly powerful game, and I hope we get something else like it soon.
They tried to recreate the feels in both the Mystery Dungeon games after this and it never had the same impact. I really wish a brand new game in the series would come out eventually :/

Just think about this for one moment... This game about having a different perspective in the Pokemon world unconventionally has one of the best anti suicide messages in all of media. The message of even if you think your life has no purpose or even to think that your presence is a setback to others... Only to find out.. everyone has a reason to exist even if that purpose is tiny or even misleading, Not one single soul deserves to be forgotten for that is a worse fate than death. To quote a ethereal spirit who went from a betrayer to a tragic ally... 'Did my life... shine?' And to that I said to him... It did... It will always shine bright.
.... Reminds me of the one floor monster houses in bottomless sea and other places... Which is why petrify order, foe hold orbs are some must haves otherwise we are in for a BAD, BAD TIME.
Shoutout to Arata Iiyoshi for composing a MASTERPIECE of a soundtrack for this game. Hearing the themes for the Time Gear, Temporal Tower, Don't Ever Forget; Memories Returned and the ending theme make those tears and emotions flow even more.
the characters in this game mean everything to me. being a kid with an awful home life and feeling like you have a little found family to support you even in a video game is life-changing.

I've been playing these games for over half my life and no matter how many times I replay it, I have ALWAYS cried when we had to say goodbye to our partner.
This game is a staple of mine, and many others childhoods. So many great memories with phenomenal storytelling that I have yet to see other games match. This game is a classic and if you haven’t played it, I HIGLY recommend it. It’s an unforgettable journey from beginning to end
This is the one game that I want a remake for. My little cousin doesn't have a DS and I would love to show him this beautiful game that i grew up with. I have all 3 copies of them but EOT was a special gift. One of my favorite childhood games, one to never forget. It’s what easily made me love Grovyle so much, along with Dusknoir and Chatot. Such lovely characters and story, Glad to see peak being replayed
Explorers of Sky is probably my favourite game, not just for Pokémon but of all time. It is literally a dream playing through this and exploring dungeons, along with one of the best stories to boot. Best part is that almost each player Pokémon has a gimmick that the player can be used to make their experience theirs. Treecko and Pikachu get Agility; all the grass starters get Bullet Seed; Confuse Ray on Vulpix; Smokescreen on Charmander and Cyndiquil; Water Pokémon having extra ground in most Dungeons; Chimchar, Meowth and Todadile get Fury Swipes, the list goes on. The only Pokémon I can’t say have anything I can think of are Torchic, Eevee and Phanpy, but a player can have a fun time with them nonetheless.
skitty is the most OP imo. you get stab wide slash, doubleslap, cover, and attract. in the red and blue rescue teams, skitty was unstoppable because they hadn't programmed genders in. which meant that u could get all pokemon to fall in love with you
@@veesaos8316 There is one flaw with Skitty in explorers though, Normalize. While this ability may help with same type attack bonus by having all moves be normal type, it also is a curse as all the bosses after entering the future would have an resistance to normal type.

Time and Darkness was certainly an amazing experience, greatly helped by the fact that it had one of my favorite Pokemon (Grovyle) as a major character. Sky version was even better.

Speaking as someone who considers this his favorite game of all time, I think one of the most important aspects to the story is how both the Player and the Partner get an equal focus in terms of story importance. This is something the other PMD games kinda struggle with to an extent, and I think Explorers’ exceptional balance is part of why it works so well. Like, the Partner is very much the protagonist. They’re kinda shy and unassuming, they want to become an explorer but lack in self-esteem, and not being all on their own is what finally helps them work up the nerve to take those steps. Over the course of the game, you watch them grow in confidence and resolve, but they also make it clear that having you there with them is part of what helps them build that confidence. You became such a close part of their life that, even at the end when they’ve reached the end of their character arc, they still break down in tears thinking of you. But then, the Player is also very much the protagonist. Your amnesia is part of what drives the story forward early on; at first it provides an excuse to join the Guild and be introduced to the wider world, while also providing some mystery here and there. You think you might learn something at Fogbound Lake, only for the mystery to remain unsolved. Then the twist hits, and when your backstory is revealed, most people do undergo their own shift in terms of how they look at their character and the game itself. It’s a rare case where a silent, ‘self-insert’ protagonist manages to have their own character arc, and it stems from the way the twist affects you, the IRL player. And again, of course, you both share equal footing. The Partner doesn’t overshadow the Player’s importance, but you also don’t overshadow them, either. The mystery of your identity and the reveals that come from it are a huge part of the story, but the Partner’s growth and desires are equally impactful. The whole emotional hook is arguably built upon the relationship between the two of you; you both work better together, both in-universe and in terms of writing.
I've known you've been a fan of the series for years, so I'm super excited to finally see you play it. And even better that you haven't played Sky and get to experience *that* for the first time. Here's to hoping we'll get to see a new PMD in the future.
I like the title of this video, cause it encapsulates my feeling for the game perfectly. It was one of the first games I ever owned myself, and it had an enormous impact on me. Almost 15 years later now I still feel a huge wave of emotions whenever I hear the soundtrack. Truly, I will never forget Pokemon Mystery Dungeons: Explorers of Sky
Explorers of Time rearranged my brain the first time I played it and I haven't ever been the same since. Love watching RT play games that I love and seeing his obvious love for the game come through in his playthrough, too.
I was confused when he said "the emotional impact of this game is already ruined" with the internet explorers of the sky, like 'I don't remember this game being sentimental' Gee, I guess I never finished it holy shit that was tough
1:11:32 The way Wooper's sprite is rendered with half of their face being shaded and with that big, unsettling smile, it looks like they're gonna lose it.
I'm here so early, just wanna say: one of my favorite games ever, the ending makes me cry every time (even just the music by itself). SO EXCITED to watch RT play this for the next two and a half hours!
i put this on to watch and then got hungry. i paused it and was flabbergasted because i got an hour in without even realising that so much time passed. a testament to how engaging this is
Watching this from start to finish stirred up so many memories for me. It makes me want to open my DS and play the adventure all over again just for the experience. All the grinding, the save scumming, the reviver seed collecting... everything. When the game first came out, I was probably around 10 years old. I didn't know much about Pokemon, but I did have a DS with my brother and one day, my mom told us she would buy one game for each of us from the store. I aimlessly picked Explorers of Sky without thinking bc Pokemon was the only thing I recognised. What a wonderful aimless choice that was. This game emotionally destroyed me as a kid and it still does!! You were right about the music; it really does hit you HARD when it counts. Although I've evolved (heh) in my taste for video games since, it still brings me so much joy to come back to this one, where I'd argue that my love for games really started from. Thank you for your wonderful video, this is definitely going into my replay playlist
I never played any Mistery Dungeon Games growing up, cause kid me never saw the appeal of playing as a Pokémon yourself. I always just played the Main Games for the DS. Ideally *nobody* would get the “identification via feet pics” part.

Explorers of Sky, in my opinion, is the best game of the entire Pokemon Franchise. Its story is legendary, its gameplay addicting, its characters unforgettable, and it has so much extra post-game content that the end of the main story might as well be only the half way point for the full story.

Wut.
I would link it, but linking things in TH-cam comments sounds so sketchy. Look it up!
@@willow1wispould always just put the wondermail code, don't need a link

U know? All the usual chaos aside, i just love seeing Dan rlly enjoy a game and getting nostalgic, just such a pure form of happiness imo
Hope y'all are having a great day/night :D
I really love how at the end, the literal god of time in this universe returns the favor for your saving time itself: using his power over time to bring your character back and maintain their existence even though it's a paradox. it's so sweet! :)
this game BROKE MY HEART as a child and i'm so ready to be broken again
My favorite part is when they realize how every sunrise can't be taken for granted. It never hurts to have that reminder. Thanks for sharing this.
30 seconds in & I'm already being annihilated by nostalgia
and at the end i was annihilated by it as well
The Mystery Dungeon series has been one of the best games I've ever played; and to think that RT would be playing Explorers of Sky (Which is 1 of the best games of the series so far) is unbelivable reliving our childhood, I can't wait to watch this!
I played this game as a kid and to this day it still holds up as one of my most favourite games of all time. I just want to say thank you so much dan for playing this game on stream and keeping the memory of this game alive.
Time and Darkness was certainly an amazing experience, greatly helped by the fact that it had one of my favorite Pokemon (Grovyle) as a major character. Sky version was even better.
Still can’t believe that such a legendary vote was gerrymandered away from us…
ive heard many things about mystery dungeon; just never thought the dungeon part was my tea. and while i wanted to know the games story (because i love storytelling), i never got around to doing it. seeing you play it made me finally watch it in full. and god, now i understand everything. i now understand why people love this game SO much. and honestly?
i think im one of those people too now.
This video really made me tear up. Even with the ridiculous names. Goddamn. I wasn’t ready for it to hit me like that.
RTGames continues to be the only letsplayer who plays the games from my ACTUAL childhood
PMD community is eating GOOD tonight! I adore this game and it's story, I'm glad RT has made a video on it so more people know about this underrated Pokémon game.
Crossing the sea of time's song always gives me chills, and the sequence after temporal tower always hits me at my core with emotions. This game is a gem and I will treasure it always
I'm actually currently playing through Time, and my girlfriend is playing Darkness alongside me - we're still shocked by how much longer than I remember it being. That said, Cloé being able to condense the whole story into two hours is insane; massive props to her! 🧡
cried as a kid playing this, crying now as a 21y/o watching it and re-living it
This game was the first game I ever played that made me cry. It's still so special to me. I had a cyndaquil and piplup though! So glad to see this game getting the attention it deserves.
The first time I played this as a kid, i sobbed so hard at the end. I am an adult now and still I sobbed at the end. I love this game so much, and i'm so glad you took the time to play it and share its masterpiece of a story with everyone else
This story doesn’t just destroy you when you’re a kid, this destroys you just as much when you’re an adult 😢
I was confused when he said "the emotional impact of this game is already ruined" with the internet explorers of the sky, like 'I don't remember this game being sentimental'
Gee, I guess I never finished it holy shit that was tough
Watching Dan play more Pokémon Mystery Dungeon makes me so happy, I love content he makes for himself more than playing popular games
1:11:32 The way Wooper's sprite is rendered with half of their face being shaded and with that big, unsettling smile, it looks like they're gonna lose it.
I'm here so early, just wanna say: one of my favorite games ever, the ending makes me cry every time (even just the music by itself). SO EXCITED to watch RT play this for the next two and a half hours!
i put this on to watch and then got hungry. i paused it and was flabbergasted because i got an hour in without even realising that so much time passed. a testament to how engaging this is
This game was perhaps the greatest game of my childhood.
I won’t ever forget.
And man have i been missing out.
Nowadays i dont have the energy, time or attention span to play the games myself so watching RT play thru this and learning the story made me cry so hard.
Can't believe this Video is a year old already 😢
