    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

I am Russian and my religion was supposed to be Orthodox Christianity. I started wondering what was the meaning of life when I was 14. Then I had a spiritual experience, when I felt one with the world, I just prayed and felt love and forgiveness and compassion towards all living beings. I tried to explain this experience, I studied all the major religions. I found the best explanation in Hinduism. Our prominent writer, Lev Tolstoy, said that "either there is no God, or everything is God". I cannot agree more.

Wow! I think you know that Leo Tolstoy was very much inspired by Swami Vivekananda. Both never met though.
I think Raja Yoga was the book which inspired him first then obviously the whole Ramkrishna-Vivekananda-Hinduism etc.

Vedanta has always been with the thought that many paths lead to one God realization. Ramakrishna himself worshipped as a Christian and it only served to expand his worship. Sarvapriyananda easily crosswalks Buddhism and Christianity with Vedanta. Universal consciousness not owned by any one religion. I think it’s beautiful.

Master Thomas did Christ a great favour when he wrote that little masterpiece. While waiting for execution, the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, often read the Imitation of Christ.

Ich schreibe aus Deutschland. Advaita Vedanta begleitet mich schon viele Jahre. Vielen Dank Swamiji 🙏

@@davlmt I can understand since the “mystics’’ of the Abrahamic religions mostly derive from was neo-platonism to substantiate their theology and gaps in their metaphysics, and twist it to their needs. However to keep things comprehendible for the public for actual transformation to happen; Eckhart’s views are closer to Advaita Vedanta imo than Plotinus teachings which are very tough and subtle in terms of theology. Through Ammonius Saccas, Plotinus may have been influenced by Indian thought. The similarities between Neoplatonism and Indian philosophy, particularly (Samkhya), have led several authors to suggest an Indian influence in its founding, particularly on Ammonius Saccas.
His student Porphyry wrote; On the Life of Plotinus and the Order of His Books, Ch. 3
"he became eager to make acquaintance with the Persian philosophical discipline and that prevailing among the Indians"

If all humans had started to become ideal , and made a quest for mokksha, by some strange leap of faith, would we have had any kind of civilization?

It that not thought to be worthwhile in vedantic view?

    • @sumitdutta7043
      @sumitdutta7043 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ByHerGrace22 So you are assuming that all will go out looking for Who Am I?.
This assumption holds no value as it never happens only a handful of sociely go for that goal, since the eligibility criteria is very high, so don't worry about that.
Maximum don't even have the ability to do that kind of Tapasya.
Majority of the society always is and will be into 'lust and money'
      Slowly people progress.
Also you are separating secular life with spiritual life, what Swami Vivekananda wanted was to divinize the secular life. Most of the advancement in humanity happened because of thinkers etc, in there calm state of mind.

      @ByHerGrace22 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you Mr Dutta for sharing your opinion.
I really don't want to get into long argumentative discussions
This thought arose when I personally try to follow, in a very limited way, what Vedanta says, that is to think of God, chant our mantra every waking minute.
I find I cannot do much constructive thinking on my secular jobs, or even think in a creative way.
Perhaps I am wrong, but I feel I am limiting the faculties God has given me as a human being.
And again , the great men who have taken civilization forward, did not overtly do meditation, or repeat God's name, as such. Perhaps they were gifted with the quality of "sthita pragya" due to good deeds in some birth.
I don't know. But as a normal human being, I feel many of my potential might be unrealized in the quest for the Divine.
Of course vedanta would say it is all Maya.
Then why does God give special gifts to some of his children, if they are only born to repeat His name?
I wish Swami SPNji would answer some of our questions.
Then we would not need to argue 😞

I would say there's a great many streams of Christianity. I believe the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ to St John says plainly, though cryptically as an allegory, that judgement day, Day of atonements, is when we learn that there is no one to judge other than the self. The Revelation begins when John is in the spirit on the Lord's day which means focused on the breath, imo, asking who am I. God said, Be still and know that I am the Lord thy God. Rev. 1-5 Jesus Christ is the faithful witness and the first begotten of the dead. The faithful witness is the knower of the field and the dead is the person we appear to be but aren't. It's the same story as Jacob in the land of Pineal, Noah's arc, Joshua bringing down the walls of Jericho. Pineal means face of God, Noah means peace and Jericho means chaos and the people of Jericho represent the chaotic ideas in our minds which don't know the reason for the golden rule. Corinthians says Faith without reason is faith in vain which means for our own purpose or against the golden rule. There is only one place to find reason and that place is within. We don't need to go within because that's where we view the world as the land of Pineal. Before wrestling with the angel Jacob sent his worldly possessions and obsessions across the Jabbock River which means to empty and yada yada yada it was revealed to him that he was the face of God which he acknowledged when he confessed to the angel I am Jacob. I am is the Lord thy God and the faithful witness of all the dead as the Life of their body. Jesus said the father is in me and I am in you. God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son who taught us to pray the Our Father. God said, Judge not lest ye be judged.
It's confusing because we believe we are our thoughts and that we can ask ourselves a question and we believe it is our self that answers. The mystery is how do the answers come and how did they get to the place they are kept sometimes called the Akasha. It's an eternal mystery because the mother of creation is unknowable like a virgin. I think Genesis would probably be more accurate as reading, In the beginning God said Let there be light and then said Holy Ghost where did that come from! 🙏

@@gomtiwad2345 The word judgement says judge the mind. I believe our minds are judged at the time of judgement which should not at all be seen like a sentencing of the convicted but rather an evolution of understanding. Who will judge the mind other than the knower of the mind? Who would know the mind at some supposed future time other than the one that knows the mind today? What is judgement other than the answer to a question? Who would question the mind? Who would know the answer to the question? It may be that judgement day is just when we choose to question the mind rather than follow it blindly. 🙏

These types of conversions are affecting Hinduism very badly, Conversion teaches people to forget about their roots and replace it with a new identity which is fueled by misinformations about the indigenous traditions and cultures. Pranam Swami Ji, sorry to say this was extremely painful to hear. Constant normalization of Christian and Islamic theology with Hindu Vedanta Philosophy simply shows the ignorance on those ideologies. The similarity of Devotion you are mentioning here is extremely superficial. The fundamental relationship between God and man in those religions is that of a "Master and Slave" unlike in Hinduism which is "Bhagawan and Bhakta (can take many forms at the same time like Sevok (not same as slave), friend, parent, lover...)". Hence the fundamental impetuous behind worshipping for them is Fear (from eternal hell-fire), not love/devotion/Bhakti like in Hinduism. It is not surprising that the Christian Inquisition was wrecking havoc all over the world during the same time Kempis lived.
But more importantly these religions does not have strong fundamentals like Vedanta which gives the true meaning to spirituality. Their basis is submission under fear, hence was/is exploited for political power till date. So naturally these religions devastated Vedic (Dharmic) civilization in last thousand years and continuing to do so even today at a rapid pace. And such misleading talks only disarm Hindus from fighting to keep the Vedic wisdom and heritage alive, as Christians and Muslims are not fooled by this.

If you believe this then you have not understood the teachings of the Christ & have instead conflated it with the words & actions of ppl & groups who have falsely claimed to follow & act by his teachings. There have been many of these including the Catholic church as an entity imo.
There are examples like this among Hinduism & other similar paths as well. This is because there are always those who follow their own base physical desire for power to abuse. Religious groups are prime targets & they use them as a tool for their own gain.
As for Islam, well... while what I just said certainly applies there are teachings & actions directly from their prophet that unquestionably run directly counter to the teachings & actions of all prior recorded enlightened beings, particularly within the later parts of the Quran. I'll just say I'm not surprised that we still experience widespread jihadism among certain portions of their followers. Imo at its core it is a "religion" that's all dogma with no fruit. That said there are sects like the Sufis who, due to their natural seeking to know God/self, have developed methods of creating a direct divine connection. Sadly they are viewed as heretics by traditional Muslims whose only connection to God comes from the Quran & imams.
