  • AS350 Helicopter Bambi Bucket Fire Fighting 2012 (UNCUT)
    On 13 of July 2012 a fire broke out on Figueira/Mogadouro/Portugal village meters from the residential area.
    One AS-350 B3 helicopter loaded water from a small tank near the houses and then dropped it on the blazing fire avoiding reaching the houses.
    Video captured using a GoPro Hero 2 HD camera.
    Thanks GoPro for building this amazing and camera and resistant to this extreme flight conditions.

    It's said that flying a plane is like riding a bicycle but flying helicopter is like riding a unicycle while juggling 3 balls. Very impressive

      I totally agree with you. A helicopter is a set of flying pieces in formation. But as a helicopter and plane pilot, I tell you that flying helicopters is by far the most spectacular flight of the two. ;)

      Déan v Dyk stay strong and work towards your dream! I am dreaming about it as well, and I am applying to become a pilot in the Royal Norwegian Air Force in a couple of weeks, and if that doesn't work out I'm going to do it the civilian way (expensive, but fortunately our government gives pilots a loan to cover 95% of the education)! I've always had a thing for helicopters, but didn't realize until now (I'm 21) that it's fully possible to become one, it's hella well paid (for only two years of studying, can even earn more than doctors a year), short education, and AMAZING work days!

    Are you the pilot? The swimming pool refill was the most impressive heli maneuver I've ever seen. This first person view shows things even better, having to do all these amidst the smoke with zero visibility at times. 👍🏼

    • @MarioMineiroAviator
      @MarioMineiroAviator  4 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      Yes, I'm the pilot. In this type of operation the bucket suspension cable is very short (about 3 meters) so for water discharge to be effective in some situations it is necessary to fly very low and through the smoke, without entering it, looking for priority discharge sites. usually lines of fire approaching houses, as was the case in this situation. But, I' am always recognizing the place for obstacles.

    Flying so low, identifying fires location, in the middle of a thick smoke screen, with the fire heat messing with the air movements... ace pilot !
    I have one question: Wouldn't it be useful to have a live feed of the camera on a small notebook/LCD panel inside the cockpit (using wifi/bluetooth to get the video signal), so you can better see the bucket and where the flames are below you ? Or you already have an optic device to look below (set of mirrors/wide-angle lenses) ?

      About you question, in fact it is something that it is possible inside of the cockpit because the camera it is a GoPro and you can install on a iPad ou Android Tablet (also smart-phones) the GoPro app that give you a live view of what the camera is recoding. But, what will be very useful was the same system but available for the fire-fighter on the ground to get a aerial view of the fire. Unfortunately, a system like that it is very expensive considering the amount of people on the ground that need it.

He explained that filling at swimming pools is only done as a last resort (but not illegal in Portugal) because of the risks involved (children playing, damage to property, flying debris such as garden furniture, etc), but he did so on this case because there were houses in danger and the water source was so convenient."
