  • Soldering SMD ICs is not quite simple, but very useful skill. In this video I'm talking about it an trying to give some tips, how to do it.
    The music box video is from here (many thanks to the author):

    This is my new favourite TH-cam channel - I love these repair videos.
    It would be good to know the type/brand of flux, solder and soldering irons you use - as there is lots of choice depending on the situation. You could probably dedicate a video to this - I did a quick search through your video list - sorry if you have covered this and I have missed it. Thank You!!

      In this video I used no name cheapest 60W iron from Amazon. The flux is from German company Stanol, also cheap and I got it in electronics store around the corner. :)

      It's the cheapest no-name stuff from the next electronics store here in Germany, nothing special. Also the soldering iron, which you see in this video is a 10€ 60W no-name toy from Amazon :D

    I once read that broken GPUs can sometimes be fixed by baking them in the oven to reflow the solder.
    I think LinusTechTips once tried this but failed.
    I wonder if this technique would have worked in this case?

    • @vinczejani
      @vinczejani 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      its only a short time solution. Reflow is the answer

    • @Dan-TechAndMusic
      @Dan-TechAndMusic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In that case, it's to reflow solder balls under the GPU, on modern chips. Or so the theory goes, in most of those cases the connections between the chip die and the BGA carrier are irreparably broken, and heat just temporarily makes the broken connections expand to make a connection again. Thermal stress will break it again after some use.
      As for this card, getting the entire board hot enough to get the solder to reflow, could damage other components or the PCB.

    BTW it's worth pointing out that you need to use good quality solder wick, the stuff with flux built-in. Cheap solder wick has no or very little flux and does not work at all well.
    BTW what is the gooey flux you show - looks like the stuff Louis Rossmann uses!

      I'm glad you asked :) I'm using the cheapest no name materials from China. All you see in this video is no name and even the soldering iron is a 10€ no name part from Amazon :D Really, no joke.

    PCI cards are plagued with cheap capacitors, bad components, bad PCB and manufacturing process. When I have yet see an ISA card go bad.

    • @necro_ware
      @necro_ware  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a box full of bad ISA cards. I don't really feel a difference. On powerful AGP cards and many GPUs however, caps do blow up more often. But this is due to much higher stress and temperatures.

    Sehr gut und irgendwie sieht das so simpel aus. Ich hätte hier eine Voodoo2, die zwar vom Triber erkannt wird, aber nicht in den 3D Modus schaltet. Die ist zwar nicht krumm, aber wahrscheinlich liegt da auch so ein Problem vor.

    • @necro_ware
      @necro_ware  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ja, bei Voodoo's kommt es sehr häufig vor. Die Teile sind oft sehr heiß gelaufen und haben sich durch ständige Erhitzung und Abkühlung ausgedehnt und wieder zusammengezogen. Dadurch sind sehr viele Karten über Jahre kaputt gegangen. Ich habe ein zweites Video, wo ich auch eine Voodoo 1 auf ähnliche Weise wiederbelebe.

    Excellent video and exactly the same approach I developed. It's been said that ROHS techniques produce boards that are more prone to cold solder joints, I'm not sure but interested in your thoughts.

    • @necro_ware
      @necro_ware  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Well, may be. I believe, that especially ROHS from the early days were worse, but may be it's just the age :)
