Yeah the Thais love a party thats for sure. I want to check out Khon Kaen and Udon Thani. I have been to Nakhon Ratchasima and was cool, very domestic city though.
Two things: 1) Yeah, they eat the turtles. 2) Those birds they set free (religious thing, they call it "making merit." It's a Buddhist karma thing.), if you go back to the outdoor shrines they set the birds free at during the day, in the evening you'll see these same vendors with cages on long bamboo poles up in the nearby trees luring the birds back in. The birds get fed and watered. They're happy to hop back in the cage. Same birds get "freed" over and over again.
I visit here yearly as my wife is from this province . Party scene just around the pull man hotel stretch There are some westerners resident living there mostly retire us veterans that use to station near khon Kean province . Food is great mostly but hygiene need improvement for some restaurants . If I am not wrong this province invented sticky rice.
