Just in case we get anymore confusion, Joe is wearing a shirt featuring the Geico Caveman not Che Guevara. It is from a year that Geico sponsored the Fossil Fest in Tampa.
Really worthwhile! Polishing a large area for an amateur, amateur rockhounding is very difficult. My family had fun picking up “pretty rocks”, but they never got polished.
Had the polisher for about 24 hours now, one definitely take the water guard off helps it not catch on things and you can get it more level, I work with a lot of materials ordered the 11 plus disc pack it came with a 6000 grit which I'll use on obsidian and other touchy things so far man a good purchase considering a flat lap is a $1,000. little learning curve thank you very much
I live in eastern Ohio and collect fossilized wood mostly Psronious....I probably didn't spell that right. It's a giant tree fern, my biggest piece is almost 300 lbs. I'd love to polish the base of it!
Great video as always! We brought home a lot of petrified wood from Arizona several weeks ago, and have been polishing pieces with the same sanding pads you featured. Love them!
I have been polishing stone for the last 33 years. Everything you say is true. I use each grit progressively longer. Your using a flexible back. If you use a hard back it will be much flatter. It is just harder to use. I like to use a hard felt buffer with aluminum oxide to finish sculpted uneven stone carvings. Not necessary on small flat pieces of stone. Pads put a better shine on flat surfaces than a pad. Weird water control/ shut off on that polisher. Nice work.
I am working on a 15" diameter slab of petrified wood I obtained from a rock shop in Utah. Their saw cut was pretty smooth. Using the ZTE wet grinder you have. I found your video the most informative of many on TH-cam, specifically timing on each grit and how the surface is supposed to look after each run. I have had to back up to coarser grits a couple of times to work on edges based on those appearances. Thanks for uploading this one!
Another awesome video guys! Thanks for sharing, it's chock-a-block full of good stuff! Keep on Digging Science, and keep up the great work on the videos! See ya in the next one!
Nice 👍 I have used a Dremel tool with diamond burs and wet sandpaper in many grades . The most challenging thing I found to polish is amber ( my favourite) Thank you for sharing
Pyrite ball was the hardest (difficult) material i ever polished. Two spots at the poles of the sphere just will not polish to a shine. Very odd. Looks like a gold nugget. Also drilling pyrite is a tough one, being a crystal.
Thank y’all. Because of you I went out to the Blue Forest. I was able to find some good discarded chunks and a skinny middle finger sized piece after digging for a hour or two. You know, first time experience! I’ll be back 😂
* Thanks for the tutorial. That is So much faster than tumbling and you don't lose so much of the stone. Michigan Rocks tumbles his until they are less than half what he started with.. But he is polishing the whole stone (all sides).. But for polishing slabs, you showed me a great way to do it myself.. Again, Thanks..
It was good to see you go through the grits and see how that tool does. I'm tempted to get one now! Thanks for the extra tips to make sure you don't make clouds and scratches. That's some seriously gorgeous pet wood, thanks for sharing! Yes, more 'how to's!
I have a petrified wood stump that's about 40lbs. I'm fine with keeping the sides rough for an interesting contrast but want the faces to be flat and polished. As of right now it's quite uneven on both faces, but it's a beautiful piece. I'm prepared to put in the effort to show off its true colors! How many pads do you think I'd go through to get a mirror finish on a truly gnarly chunk? Thanks in advance for your help. I enjoyed your informative & humorous tutorial. 😊
So awesome, Unfortunately here in Canada we can't legally polish or sell petrified wood because it's owned by the government...Canada has some funky fossil laws.
This video made me think a coffee table made of petrified wood with a metal bezel and legs would be something people would by that's made of petrified wood.
Well that's exactly how you make granite countertops... and same tools... but I don't have your lapidary saw so a angle grinder with a 7" continuous rim diamond blade works fine... a circular saw and water hose for DIY cutting whole slabs of granite

I actually dig the shirt. Who doesn’t love the cave man?
imo that t-shirt looks more like Rasputin than Che Guevara

Great how to share, mixed with a bit of brotherly love, great job guys, I did not know they had such a tool.

All your vids are great…..I especially like this demo. We need these "how to" videos. Wonderful!

I love these diy types videos. I also like the restoration of the shark jaw.
More Joe and Mike! Good content
Thank you for this tutorial. 🙂
You are welcome :)
I find both look pretty amazing when they get wet...stones

Mine...All Mine!
Good job bro, amazing
Have you ever seen (or developed) a way to do this indoors? Gets too cold to do this in the midwest in winter!!!! Would love to see an inside setup.
Let's do some mammoth teeth!! :-)
Lets go new video
This video made me think a coffee table made of petrified wood with a metal bezel and legs would be something people would by that's made of petrified wood.
Great video
I'm polisher to in the Philippines .. may tools is only dIY polishing pad and sand paper only ..then I got mirror polish
Amazing ! You should make videos too !
Mud fossils channel The Mud Fossil Process creates perfectly preserved
How do I do the opposite? I'd like a matte finish. Should I just lightly sand it with a fine grit sandpaper?
Awesome!
I have a 35 lb tree stump of petrified, I have to see videos on how to polish it so have it sliced ? I'm cluless
Where can I find petrified wood in Florida?
I'm currently trying to petrifie my own piece of wood...I haven't made allot of progress..
Cool!

1:19 great kung pow reference!
10:29 needs to be ur profile picture
I'd like this twice if I could.
Cool
Why do you do all five instead of just jumping to the 3k? What does doing each polish do for the final product?
If you jump straight to 3k it would literally destroy the fabric of the universe..
@@UWPcustombaits Ahhhh, I see. The Implosion Theory persists. Thank you.
The guy cocaine man?
Geico Caveman
Digging Science oh, sorry. Uncle Sam messed my hearing up pretty good.
@@u.s.militia7682 No worries, thanks for tuning in to another video!
Digging Science you bet. I love em.
I think a Tumbler would be easier
Electric power tool w/ water and no rubber sole shoes?!
I hope the explanation will be translated into Arabic
Why do you have a murderer on your shirt?
ITS THE GEICO CAVEMAN
what?
Joe your awfully monotoned. Step up your enthusiasm a bit. And a smile trust me won't kill you.
You'd present better if yall got a hair cut.
Completely unnecessary, unless you're old enough to be my parent. Then, I respectfully disagree. They're presenting very well for me.
