I live in Australia and guns aren’t actually nationally banned !
Although... I’d have to travel to a very specific state in this country where the people aren’t pleasant and the place reeks of koala piss, then provide 250 points of ID at the gun club, half of which will be declined because I live outside that state, forfeit my phone and wallet as I go through the metal detectors, undergo a strip search before walking into the shooting galley, hire one of two types of handguns ; an old Glock and an outdated model of Revolver that Ned Kelly probably used, then fire at Archery Targets because Australian Law mandates you can’t fire at anything remotely human shaped.
In Japan, it’s not all that different, but the same laws even extend to AirSoft Guns.
I’d be paying roughly $50 per hour to use the range, $100 per gun hired and $5 per round fired. I’ll be put on a National registry that states I’ve fired a gun and been to a firing range, then I’ll have to undergo that experience several times until I have enough accumulated hours to earn a “Firearms Safety Certificate” that certifies me to join a Gun Club and own my own Firearm.
Now... in Australia I’d only be allowed to legally own a firearm under very specific circumstances. Heck, even being a Law Enforcement Officer doesn’t give you the right to own a firearm.
If you do chose to buy a firearm, you can only buy a Semi-Automatic because Laws... and you have to have it stored inside a Locked Box that’s been Bolted Down to various specifications. You’re not allowed to carry it, concealed or open carry unless it’s to and from your profession requiring your firearm.
Interestingly, you have to state on the Gun Registry exactly where that gun is kept stored.
You have to prove that you’re a Sports Shooter, or your profession requires it (Farmer/Rural Pest Control)
And get this... in Australia, a firearm can’t be used in any way shape or form, whatsoever for “Self Defense”. If you do... you’ve just become the bad guy and there is no legal basis for self defence.
In most states, firearms are outright banned and the ones in circulation are the ones that were previously legally obtained, but procured illegally from... you guessed it, the Gun Registry.
It’s not uncommon that once you purchase a firearm and keep it locked away, after several months have passed, one day when you’re at work or out of the house, someone breaks in and takes your firearm. There’s organised crime syndicates that have access to the Gun Register, and no one wants to report a missing firearm because that carries a whopping massive fine.
On the plus side, gun violence is so scarce here you’d think that guns are outright banned here.
The hassle of getting one is too costly. We have free healthcare here but try owning a gun here; it’s more expensive than a drug addiction or healthcare in the US.
Also an extremely impractical thing to have unless you live on a Farm, and an extremely incriminating thing to have on your record (owning or have fired a gun). You can’t exactly brag that you have a gun or you’ve fired a gun because it would be like saying you’ve been to prison.
On TV, if someone is introduced with a firearm in their introduction, 90% of the time they turn out to be the bad guy.
As a nation we’re conditioned to think that all guns are bad and only bad guys use guns. The police are held in contempt because they carry guns.
So for us poor folks in Australia... we don’t realistically have that option.

Now I could have just bought one and called it a day; however, I did feel that without the skills to wield it, it would never be much more than a dead, oddly shaped and overpriced hunk of metal.

It isn't exactly the same. The classes are shorter, there are way more kids than there were back then. The forms are a little different. We spar with a lot more gear than I used to spar with. We practice on mats instead of wood floors. But it was close enough and I haven't looked back.

When you are shopping MA and test driving, I would observe a class before participating. Have conversations with the owner and instructors if possible. Yes, there will be a bit of arrogant bravado and confidence, it kinda' goes with the territory, but there should also be some humility and joy, they should love what they teach. Also listen for stories of failure and changing their mind about their particular MA and others. If they have learned lessons about what does and doesn't work and why, and were humble enough to learn from their mistakes and change they will be able to help you learn from their mistakes.
I have had good experiences with instructors who were high level, black belts in more than one MA discipline as well as some who were probably only a couple of years ahead of me. The human factor is important. The character and teaching ability is more important than what particular style or curriculum they teach or being a baddass ninja, especially at the beginning level of the first couple of years. If they can teach you solid fundamentals and principles and help you maintain the necessary physical, mental, and emotional fitness you will have a solid foundation to build more advanced skills later.

What I told a friend a while back who was inspired to start martial arts, because I guess it looked like I was having so much fun lol, was to do some online research.
Read and research about different styles and watch some videos of them (not to start learning the art of course, just to get a visual of it). That way before taking classes he kinda had a general idea of what direction he wanted to go.
Basically other than that first step, it's the same as what you say. Because one may like the way something looks from afar, and not so much when really doing it. Or like you said, the style can be great but the school can suck.

First 'martial art' I was in was Aikido, but I'd been in a few fights before. Looking back, I had some kind of surreal feelings at times when I did aikido training. Had to suspend my disbelief I think. Mainly because the attacker (seme) is only ever allowed one move, and everything was focused on hand holds. But at least some of my seniors did encourage some kind of pressure testing (not sparring). Only did it because had friends doing it. After everyone left, i did not continue.
Did kyokushin after that. Seemed strange most of the seniors would go all out on a casual sparring. Stopped after a while, did not feel like getting hurt over nothing. Not doing any rn but felt inspired by bald mma jesus (that's you Ramsey) to take something in grappling for ground game.

Great analogy with cars - some people want 4 wheel drive off roader, some people want an efficient commuter, some people want a camper van. Doesn't matter how good the model is, if it doesn't suit what you want - or need - then 'you' can be disappointed with the vehicle you choose or get sold. e.g. Meditative, contact, fitness, social martial arts.

I've had a brief (1 year) experience with Wing Chun and 2 years of Kyokushin Karate training back in middle school / junior high to fight off the bullies, but after the bully problem was rectified, academic priorities took over, and I had to quit.
Now as an adult in my early 30s, I came back to Karate because during the lockdown of the pandemic I had to stay home for extensive periods of time, and I often found myself practicing some basic Karate moves I still remembered for excersising and mediation purposes. So, the year 2020 became my year of martial arts rediscovery and research, which is how I came across this channel. I briefly considered Taekwondo because there are literally two TKD dojangs very close to where I live, but I quickly realized that I lost most of my flexibility from my childhood years, and I simply would not be able to throw those high head kicks for a very long time. This line of thinking lead me to my next choice which was "old man Karate", also known as Goju Ryu, - high kicks are available in the curriculum, but not nearly as emphasized as they are in TKD because this dojo has a focus on practical, close range self defence sparring rather than long distance sports Karate sparring style. In short, this was a perfect fit for my objectives. 2 months into it, and I couldn't be happier with my choice.

I don't have any real ambition to compete, my goal is to train for excercise, self defence, and simply because I enjoy learning new things. I want to learn Muay Thai and BJJ for starters, so, would you recommend I do both at once, or start with one before I take up the other? If so, which would you recommend I start with? For me it was right from the begining to be able to defend myself and the people I work with with minimal harm to offenders so things like Krav Maga flew out of the window along with striking oriented styles (boy was I wrong with this one).
So it was BJJ which I kinda thought would fit the bill best.
But then funny thing happened and I kinda end up taking some general striking releated lessons...
Aaaaaand some self defence oriented Jiu-jitsu.
    And I loved em all!
So now around a year later I'm doing Kickboxing twice a week, BJJ twice a week (when we're able to, free rolling w/out teachers doesn't fit my bill) AND Jiu-jitsu twice a week (Hokutoryu) of which I happen to have belt test next week for 5.kuy (aka yellow) listening to my aging body and knowing when to take a day off since lessons are from monday to thursday with no days off in between and kb & bjj during same day.
My goal is still clear, it just got a bit more complex.
Oh, and a lot of credit goes to this Ramsey fellow with smooth voice.

Before i even watch im gonna say that basically gym is a business and so if they don't cater to new people they'll quickly exhaust their customers. Bjj deals with such a high attrition rate i feel like it's a good place to start. It's also one of those arts that will tell you that whole physicality thing is even for you. Bjj will test your will and discipline earlier than other arts.
you sum it up pretty beautifully

More common sense! I was lucky in that I got taken along by a couple of close friends to a multi style self defence type club which had that outward looking ethos. Eventually focussed on aikido but studied judo, ju Jutsu, karate, tai chi, and a load of other things on the way. Made me appreciate martial arts generally and allowed me to make informed choices as to which way I want to go.

Me personally my first martial art was Judo and thats preaty much all I have trained in.Judo me practicing Judo was not really my idea in the first place in fact as far as martial arts goes Judo was preaty far down on my list but I've had a social worker in high school who knew a guy who was a sensei of a Judo Dojo and she recomended his Dojo to me and the other reason why I joined is that he initially offered free classes.I took the classes I enjoyed them however what I was also preaty young and not to mention I was also quite ignorant and was always wanting to check out Ninjitsu because I thought that it would actually be effective and because I was also drawn to all of the glamour behind it however there wasn't even any Ninjitsu Dojos in my area. However as time went on I began to further appreciate Judo and I began to figure out that Judo was actually more effective when it came to actually achieving the goal I was trying to achieve in the first place.Which was preaty much to learn the most effective efficient method of hand to combat posible as well as to actaully gain more of an understanding of how the warriors who existed earlier in history would have actually fought each other.

It depends also on the reason why you need your car for. Just to go to work in town? Or go to the countryside through sand paths? or car racing? Same thing for martial arts.

2nd style that i switch off is arnis(stick fighting and empty hand strikes), 3rd is boxing and then back in 2019 i start trained in Muay thai. I have learn 4 Martial Arts Style. I make my own hybrid system similar to yaw yan or mma. I focus on strikes, clinch fighting(stand up grappling) and pressure point

Lol gotta use the analogies , but yeah, starting from nothing is a case of shopping around for the right martial arts school. Back when I was a kid the selection was razor thin. I actually found my martial art school because I was going to fight someone that I challenged and he told me that he would only fight me if I went to where he trained. Once I did and saw the style I completely forgot why I was there and became best friends with the guy I was going to fight 😅

  • @Buphido
    @Buphido ปีที่แล้ว

But even for cars, there are recommendations for cars that are good for beginners. Cars that are cheap (because the first car is most likely to get damaged by slight misjudgements in parking etc.), cars that school you in driving manual (seriously, get a manual as a first car, otherwise you're never gonna learn it) and are still easy to drive and specs you should look out for when buying a car. Though you did do the latter.
I'm currently looking for my first martial art anyway and I've narrowed it down by choosing a mixed martial arts gym with many very good reviews that allows me to try multiple martial arts without having to change the gym.
