As much as I adore Jamie's work, DAMN I hate statements like this, which can now be found on just about every video on the subject. It's subjective. It's not a contest. Of the countless you tubers, you're my favorite, the only one I look forward to, and even more so, Jamie Windsor is the only one whose advice I thoroughly follow. Tks a million Jaime!
So, this is the third video of yours I'm watching, and my oh my is it interesting. TH-cam has become so saturated with "the one secret about light in your photos ! PRO TIPS" and then you watch a 9minutes video with two ads and two sponsor breaks to tell you about the flippin exposure triangle... And your videos take the time necessary to properly explore your subject, it shows research, it shows dedication and it actually helped me. For example, the calibration tool isn't something I used creatively at all, and now I can't wait to go to lightroom and play around some unedited photos on my computer. Most of all it gives me faith and inspiration to shoot some content, makes me happy that there is still a place for creators on YT.
Oh my gosh, I almost cried when I saw the notification for your new video! I literally check for your videos every single day and I was so excited to see a new one! I've missed you so much and I'm so happy that you're back to creating. You are one of the most kind and talented people I know, and your art is truly inspiring. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for being you and for sharing your gift with the world. Your videos make my day so much brighter and I've learned so much from you. I'm always so eager to watch your new videos and I rewatch them multiple times. You are an incredible artist and I'm so grateful for your work. Please keep creating and sharing your art with the world! We need it more than ever. Sending you all my love and support!❤
I normally am not active in the comments, but I'm frustrated by youtube's decision to take down your original upload and would like to help boost this video's engagement. You are a huge inspiration to me, I'm an illustrator and photographer, and your videos are both so informative and entertaining. I love seeing your passion for the craft and I hope that this situation hasn't demotivated you from creating videos. I look forward to your next upload!
Your channel always has the best tips, info and comments, I don't follow a lot of photography channels but I can see it right away, you teach the photographer to use his actual inner camera on how to recognize a photograph before actually pointing the camera, each video is inspiring, well narrated and with clear examples, I don't practice photography more than casually capturing a moment with my phone, but I'm a designer and if something is true, to create good design you have to train your eye to recognize good design, it is the foundation, so it is the same for photography, the rest is practice and letting your brain do the rest. Hats off to you Jamie!
Yet another great video Jamie. What I really enjoy about your content is that you always leave us something to think about and something to inspire us as photographers.
Absolutly brilliant thank you for going to the extra effort and re-uploading. Still watch a lot of your old work and looking forward to the next bout of videos you’re going to release.
Jamie, I really have to commend you on the way you create and structure your videos. You are a great educator and I love how passionate you are about doing this. Great job! Keep going!

A pain in the ass that TH-cam takes down your content! The original video helped me so much with my composition and I hope this one can help others too
Great video! I studied painting and drawing and got a lot of composition ideas from that. I also like the idea of photography as a form of graphic design using a lens. I find a lot of the so-called rules of composition are important to understand because viewers are trained to look at photos in a certain way. It's partly because these compositions work, it's partly because we're trained to look for them.
Jamie, your videos inspire me to take better photos. Thanks for sharing your expertise and congratulations on half a million subs, you deserve them all
I was wondering where this video went! I was trying to find it a bit ago, and couldn't see it anywhere. Glad to see it came back, sorry about TH-cam being dumb.
Along with blurring my eyes, I also use the small navigator pane or filmstrip preview in Lightroom when deciding on a crop or looking for distractions to clone out.
I like your video editing choices. Not repetitive, simple and unexpected. That O changing into 8 for example. Neat and quirky, but not distracting from the subject.
Thank you for sharing this content with us, so informative and helpful, I think this it’s important for aspiring photographers to really pay attention to these videos, save them.. rewatch them and practice all of these elements, I feel it will give us a much more “balanced” and well rounded approach to photography.
Awesome video! For me the best single piece of advice is taking care of the figure-ground relationship. That, beside choosing well your background makes a world of difference.
Just came over from another of your _lecture-like_ videos… And I hope that you are feeling well after all your troubles, health issues and morons you would need to fight off. I am learning so much from you, thank you so much!!! ;-)
Hi, there, your heart popping up while I was watching the video, means _a lot_ to me, please take care! Kind regards from Berlin, Germany, - yes, the continent ;-)
I’ve mixed up my photography and painting practice: I almost exclusively shoot in black and white 1:1 because it’s like a thumbnail sketch that lets me see planes and areas of value. If it works in black and white the painting will have a good armature. I save a copy to raw in case I wanna convert it to colour and to play with colour later once I found my shot (I paint in colour). Then there are tips for painting composition that I now use in my photography. Are there interesting verticals and horizontals? A gradient is also like a vertical/ horizontal. Can I change the f stop to blur distracting edges. I’ll soften hard edges in post if they lead your eye out of the frame. I recommend the book Mastering Composition by Ian Robert’s if anyone wants to try my approach. Like it really made a whole bunch of ideas click into place for me. But yeah it’s also great to use your cameras viewfinder to see the world in monochrome tone.
Been a minute since I’ve watched this, so I’m happy to give it another view for support. Probably the video that originally introduced me to your channel.
your videos are always amazing but the HHGG homage in the rule of thirds was off the charts. Production values are unmatched as always. Hope your health is going ok. Take care
Composition, from it's Latin roots, means "position together"... The elements need to be positioned in a way that they work as a whole. That's it. I sometimes use a Leica VIDOM viewfinder. The image is flipped, and you can also turn it upside down. It's a great tool for balancing the shot.
Very helpful video. Quick question: When you say to use your phone, are you talking about when you don’t have any other camera on you? Or are you saying you like to compose the shot on your phone rather than using your viewfinder even when you are going to use another camera to take the shot?
Thanks. I mean that I compose using my phone, so I can visualise it in black and white or how it will look under or over exposed etc. (unless I'm using a mirrorless camera, in which case that will do it all with the EVF).
These are good reminders, thanks. It's a pity though that I can't save the video, though. I have this list with photography tips, tricks and reminders and this video would fit perfectly.
