Richard Harris and Peter O'Toole - Drinking Stories

  • "Ireland's Richard Harris (1930-2002) and Peter O'Toole (1932-2013) were two of the most charismatic and much loved actors of their generation. At their career peaks, these two men had the whole world at their feet and lived through some of the wildest exploits the entertainment industry has ever seen. They are widely considered by peers to have been the two biggest drinkers in Hollywood history! Between them they have 10 Academy Award nominations, 4 Golden Globes, and 2 BAFTA's. These loveable piss-artists from the Emerald Isle were also seemingly immune from the law. They got away with murder because of their extraordinary acting talent and because the public just loved them. They were truly the last of a breed."

Do you prefer living a mediocre life and live long or a full life and.. still live long? They didn't actually die young, but they had enough experiences to fill ten life-times.

I hope that you remember that the next time you get accosted by a drunk.
There is nothing life affirming by being an alcoholic - quite the reverse.
If they had not been famous then you would think them to be degenerate scum.

That's right, like Bob Mitchum, knew he was dying, but he lived life as he wanted all the way to the end, with a tequila in hand

Victoria Gadd Burton & O'Toole as well, think they would pop up in each other's movies. O'Toole was eviscerated by London critics, for Hamlet (?), Burton recalls calling him to commiserate in his diaries, he had to do all the talking, unusual for O'Toole.

Trust me, they do! These remarkable fellas had a rep theatre industry to work in, so they’d be doing 10-12 plays a year and constantly working and getting reviews and drinking and enjoying themselves. And becoming famous and going on talk shows to tell stories! Nowadays all the parts for actors are on telly and film and you have to eat well and drink smoothies and behave. If you’re a lucky sod like me and you get to do the odd play, you’ll meet amazing actors full of their own stories like these!

Listening to stories like this actually puts these men in something of a classy position. They aren't running about gunning everyone down like nowadays. You can actually appreciate their drunken, brawling days by listening to their storied lives. You won't get that today. They may have been ruffians of the day, but not back stabbing, life stealing trash. And they accept their own faults and weaknesses. They still possessed charm, wit, intelligence and an overwhelming appetite for overindulgence.

Richard Harris once found himself on a train late at night. He was alone on this train without any idea how he got on it. At the end of the line. The conductor of the train told him he had to get off as the train was stopping for the night. He found himself in a terraced street in the early hours of the night. He started throwing small stones at the nearest upstairs window of the first house in the street, eventually a woman opened the window and said "what do you want"?, he said he wanted a drink!, ......he was there 4 weeks lol
