I feel like if Android were sold, the custom ROM ecosystem could really thrive. These days, you have to hunt for specific phones just to install other OS...
Android hasn't really been open for a very long time. You can't install it on a majority of devices and good like building a generic Google rom from scratch without the manufacturer's drivers. It's open source in name only.
@@ericneo2 I agree but still android is much more flexible than iOS. You can't install iOS on ANY device other than iPhone and you can't build it at all. Android can become much closer than it is right now. At least now you can install Ubuntu touch on SOME android devices if you want. They're rare but it's possible. And I don't think selling Android to any other company like Meta would solve the problem if doesn't make it worse
@@taiwbiit could be that an acquisition by meta wouldn't go through. After all what sense does it make to pass it from one monopoly to another. I also feel like google would sooner set up an independent company whose sole purpose it is to develop core android with significant funding by them, foregoing the short term gains from selling android, rather than give the second biggest data harvester the golden goose and potentially hurting themselves mid to long term. Because thats what its all about. Data. And if google cant use phones for data harvesting as easily, they surely wont let meta do so, since then, very quickly, meta would become the top data harvester and that directly hurts googles bottom line.
Custom roms died not because of Google but because phone companies locked the bootloader to keep you in their rooms. Mostly because of the hardware discount they give you to do business with them.
As much as we'd like that, it almost certainly won't happen. Google will find some loophole that allows them to continue maintaining Chrome, if not directly then indirectly.
Before being anti-business, you should be anti artificial monopolies defended by state regulations and laws, and by taxes that destroy their competition.
Even if Chrome disappears, the open source base , chromium will still be there and will get picked up by someone else, so I'm not worried about chrome going away. Now whether an FSF like entity has enough ressources to maintain a web browser is a different story...
It is *SO* hard to get involved in the Linux Kernel development, Kent knew what he was getting involved in when they were considering accepting his code, and his attempts to pressure and disrupt something so critical and sensitive seems to suggest he absolutely should not be touching *anything* involved with the Kernel. Trying to enforce time pressure and bypass considerations of safety and caution are classic signs of malicious schemes, so I am now *entirely* convinced that bcachefs was going to be used to attempt to trojan horse in some other kind of backdoor later once people had their guard down.
This is just such an ignorant world view, especially for a software environment with over-the-top code review practices and high barriers of entry. Rather than speculating on an individual if they're trojan horsing, why not just make your project better defended against such things with proactiveness rather than reactiveness while keeping it open for modification?
@@retagainez For how long one can try proactiveness before moving to harder ways? They tried for months, really. Some of the developer has much more patience with that douche that he deserved. I would have done this waaaaaay before.... To be part of the Linux Kernel submiters is a privilege, not a right. You have to follow procedures or we are doomed.
@@retagainez No, _that_ view is somewhat ignorant. No, I am not going to side with OP's conclusion that bcachefs is somehow malicious by design. No, the point is... there _are_ procedures in place to defend the kernel against malicious attempts. And it is those procedures which Kent got sand in his vagina over when those procedures were pointed out to him. So... yeah, the methodology is in place, it did its job... and the person involved then threw a temper tantrum by launching personal attacks. I mean... objectively, it'd be silly not to conclude that Kent is just an arrogant baby who thinks he knows how to work in a team but in reality doesn't have a clue.
This is important work to maintain a free-market, but not enough of it happens. They should have broken up Microsoft years ago, and they were going to.. except some dodgy weirdness happened at the very last second, the judge was replaced and Microsoft miraculously got off the hook.
@@lellyparker This seems to always be how it is for corporations. Justice is just suspiciously too slow and clumsy to get the job done every time and they end up with slaps on the wrist. Right now, we might not be forced to use one operating system of we want to use any number of apps that are now considered vital for various industries if that had happened.
This is actually not miraculously at all. The fact that Microsoft software dominates the world market is important for the “national security” of the USA or, in other words, for the capabilities of its three-letter agencies.
It was not “dodgy weirdness”. Bush became president, his appointees instituted a more pliant and corporate-friendly DoJ, and, per usual when the GOP comes to power, big business won, and everybody else lost. Don’t be surprised if the exact same thing happens in the Google case regardless of what the outgoing DoJ is trying to do.
The deep gov relies on these huge companies, they can't let them break apart and lose power while they are in need of them, so they would do anything to keep them on top including replacing judges.
The original steam controller was ahead of its time as a concept. Now that they had time to refine the tech on the Steam Deck the steam controller 2 could be a better alternative to the other high quality controllers, specially so because those have increased in price significantly without any noticeable innovative changes.
God I wish I got a steam controller or 2 imported when they were 20 bucks. It looks so cool but I can't justify paying 200 bucks for a scalpers chest of new in box supply.
Hans Reiser and Kent Overstreet are both exquisite pieces of work. I had the opportunity(?) to meet them both and had to try hard to stay below their thresholds of irritation!
@@NreKonkoro-vt2fo but currently on Chromebooks whether there arm or x86 (mying is 13100f) you have to put it in developer mode and then run a script to flash a new bootloader onto it. This is actually quite similar to Androids and the process to unlocking their bootloader, however, it's not clear what will happen if Google has to sell Chrome since Chrome OS is branded off of Chrome. If Chrome OS has also sold, the other company might remove this since the most used for Chromebooks is in schools which unlocking the bootloader would not be helpful in that case
Hans Reiser and Kent Overstreet are both exquisite pieces of work. I had the opportunity(?) to meet them both and had to try hard to stay below their thresholds of irritation!
It's okay we dont want google inside linux, we do want steam inside linux. I'd much rather have the private company taking its time to develop something with passion than a publicly traded known data digger creepazoid trying to convince the linux space to give up privacy for security.
Thumbs up for the Tuxedo team. Accidents will happen, what counts is how people/companies react to it. Tuxedo obviously did as much as they could short term, and committed to fixing the rest asap. Nice going!
I really hope so. I want to have touchpads on a controller for desktop just like on the Deck. My 8bitduo is good but I think a Valve controller would work perfectly on linux.
The code of conduct issue is that it doesn’t apply to all starting with Linus, so here we have a case in which no one knows who is allowed to insult others and who doesn’t, and which groups apply. Either make it explicit or don’t have a CoC that is optional depending on the individual.
@ Linus just broke CoC by expelling any possibly Russian, Russian-adjacent or Russian sounding contributor from the Kernel (1st violation of CoC), then promoted a hostile environment to any with Russian ancestry (2nd violation of CoC). But yea, no bad words used at this time.
@@isaicicourel Well for the Russian expulsion, there wasn't much he can do. Its either Russian Devs stay and Devs that either work in American companies or are also americans themselves likely forced to leave working on the kernel due to the US's newest sanctions, which prevent any company or person from working with any russian national. And for that matter the ban or expulsion isn't like how you're describing it with some known russian devs being push out from working on certain of the kernel or having their work being checked. Also should be noted that sanctions like these would likely apply to a person that isn't an american national, but still employed by an american company as well. For example, the Cuban embargo prohibits any american company from doing any service to cuba that might help the cuban government, but a country like germany or another could not export anything to cuba as in order to do so would need a cargo ship that is insured but the insurance market for ships is dominated by american companies. Therefore, Unless the company that does the export wants to take the risk, can't ship the cargo to Cuba(and for that matter the cargo have to be german made with no american company involvement or money). There is also the Square payment system as an example a while back, where since it was an american business, it could not process any transactions that involved cuban goods, which became a headache for a lot coffee sellers in Canada that were selling cuban coffee beans since Canada doesn't have embargo on the country. so tdlr; because of US policy, the whole linux project had to do this in order for most developers to continue working on the project regardless of CoC or not. Also said decision would also impact any other project that has anyone that works in/for a US company or lives in the US.
Errrrhhhh, there is a difference between what Linus does and what Kent did. Linus doesn't go for personal attacks. He doesn't insult your intelligence, heritage, sanity or anything like that. Kent has personally attacked more than one person. If you don't see the difference there, well... that's on you. Kent really just is a prick. Linus? Well, yeah, he can be very difficult at times as well. But so far I've not once seen him engage in any behavior which is an overt sign of anti-social personality disorder. Kent is not right in the head.
Actually, no, Linus does not break the CoC. There is a difference between what Kent did and what Linus typically does. Linus attacks your code and your coding style. Or your ability to write code which should go into the kernel. He does _not_ go for personal attacks, questioning your sanity or intelligence. Kent, however... _did_ do that. More than once. Attacking more than one person. And why? Just because it was pointed out to him that kernel development has procedures in place to ensure stability and security. Procedures he was not willing to follow. So... here Kent is, being told how to be a better kernel developer and what does he do? Throw a temper tantrum and call people retarded. Yeah... errrrh... sorry but... Kent, if you got sand in your vagina, go address that issue somewhere else. Kent is an ass. A childish, whiny little prick whose relevance is far less than he seems to think it is. For one thing... I have yet to see this claim about his filesystem not eating your data actually being proven. For months now, he has been posting unending merges which address data corruption.
Why Meta, though? Do they force you use their platforms? Probably not. If you decide to use their services, you're agreeing to their rules. It's their platform, so they get to set the terms. It’s kind of like going to someone’s house and complaining about their house rules. If you don’t like it, you can always leave. Personally, I don't use the service that I don't like. I like to keep things just as simple as that.
When you regulate you only cause the opposite, you have to deregulate, lower taxes and let the market work. You favor the generation of artificial monopolies, not natural ones. You should review these concepts.
8:06 my social skills aren’t perfect either, and I agree that using that as an excuse for bad behavior is just plain wrong! Even if this Kent guy genuinely has issues that are understandable, none of it excuses what he did/said/etc.
Exactly, as someone who went into full blown anxiety when talking with anyone, it is _on you_ to ensure that you are able to work collaboratively with others. If not, you should either get help or get someone to converse on your behalf This is unacceptable

Your timeline with Kent is kinda wrong, that public apology requirement from the CoC team was created AFTER Kent started working on mainline kernal. He's the first person they've done this with. Not to say I'm on team Kent, but lets be clear our BDFL has made more than a few snide remarks over the years, and hasn't issued public apologizes for each of them.
Linus' snide remarks attack your code or coding style. He does not attack your sanity or intelligence. He does not go for personal attacks. Kent went all the way. Going for personal attacks. Not the least of which... against Linus himself. In a nutshell... Linus is a blunt ass at times. Kent... is a troll. I'd much rather work in a team with the blunt ass. While I agree that ChromeOS being converted to Android won't be a good thing, while Google adopting widely used tool to convert it into a run-of-the-mill Linux distro might have been, there also has been some similarly adjacent news: With the current Android 15 QPR Beta (well, it still is current as it doesn't seem the latest beta is actually already rolling out), for probably the first time in all of the existence of Android, Google actually updates the Kernels for their Pixel devies. You know, like a normal Linux distro would do. Until now, they only backported changes themselves or relied on LTS releases. But now that LTS will be limited to just two years, while more OEMs promise like 5-7 years of updates, a solution had to be found. As it seems, all still supported Pixel devices have been updated to be based on Linux 6.1.99. So whatever Google figured out to make all those closed source driver modules and firmware work on newer Kernels, maybe there is stuff others can profit off too. Like Custom ROMs being easier to create, maybe even Linux distros for the Android Chromebooks, that may still need the Android-Linux Kernel but can otherwise be used as a normal Linux distro. Also I think forcing Google to sell off Chrome or Android would be just plain out dumb. Instead, there should be some control over both, like Chrome needing to adhere to certain standards that would in turn force them to allow proper ad-blocks again and all data collection to be transparent, optional and opt-in - you know, like at least Europe mandates for years already. Fact is, Chrome and Android are the biggest in their categories, selling them would harm everybody. Chrome/Chromium is the base for pretty much every browser and the lead when it comes to developing and adopting web standards. No other company would be able to take over, as literally just Mozilla and Apple are left as competition, and they are already struggling a lot. We don't need all Chromium-based browser to become another Safari, and I honestly don't believe browsers just all hopping on Firefox, or even contributing to it. That's the reason why everybody ditched their own engine. And Android? There is only iOS left, and that is just a steaming pile of garbage with a fancy paint job. There has been a duopoly for way too many years for any competition to emerge and stick around. And I don't even see Samsung taking over fully without compromising too much, and everyone else would most certainly lock things down at least as bad as iOS does. Then you can say goodbye to devices where you can even install Custom ROMs, let alone things like Ubuntu Touch, SailfishOS or postmarket OS.
I will die on the hill that the steam controller was the best* gamepad available and that gamers just rejected it because they don't want to give anything a chance that isn't basically a dualshock, so I'm thrilled that there's a new one. *except the neo geo CD pad with the clicky stick
Somehow I don't think it will be at all difficult for Google to continue as a monopoly regardless under the new US administration, both parties having displayed blatantly quid pro quo attitudes on previous occasions....
A US company that exploits its dominance on the global market is better than a Chinese/Russian/Japanese/European company that fills the gap. Every US administration thinks this way.
I had an issue with that too. I love Nick, but talking about your biggest sponsor and then having a sponsorship from them at the end is bad optics. What bothered me more was he used what Tuxedo did and the changes that they were forced to do as part of the selling points in the sponsorship. That's even worse optics.
@williamepps9519 You said it perfectly. I really like Nick's videos, but I think maybe he should have skipped Tuxedo sponsoring this particular video (like he does with other hardware videos).
@@cameronbosch1213 I imagine it's possible this wasn't specifically outlined as a possibility in the contract so he might not have been as confident doing it here where he might have had it outlined for hardware reviews, but that's just a guess.

It does. Linus does not go for personal attacks. Kent does. Besides, anyone is free to file complaints against Linus, with the CoC panel. Not sure that has happened but I think we'd have heard about it if someone had. He is not immune. By the language of the CoC alone, no one is immune. So... well... given that no one has filed any serious charge against him suggests people are fine with Linus. No one was fine with Kent's language. Not even his supporters were fine with it. Since it really was just vile at times. The things he has said over the past few months. Like, really personal insults which have no business being a part of any discussion about kernel development.
Personally I think that if google wants to change its things, they should be able to do. If google wants to recreate chrome os, making it just a redistribution of android, i think there's nothing to worry about, they're trying to make chrome os works better in their ecosystem. You can not install chrome os on other laptops that aren't chromebooks, so i ask myself, who gives a shit about that? The only thing that is important that google adds, is better support to add a bootloader to these devices, so it's easier to change if people wants, they make money anyway. Things are a bit more spicy and important in open source projects, like chromiumos, but also if they decide to stop the developing of chromiumos to have just android to work on, it is however open source, so the thing here is to make sure android will be really open source, like i read on some comments. But this is just my opinion, feel free to discuss it if you want, just make sure it'll be a great place to share ideas, and not convincing anyone on personal ones
Lunduke Journal gives much more sane and balanced information on news that involves the people and the organizations in the Linux world. Nick does fine on the tech side.
I for one think merging ChromeOS and Android is actually good: the linux support on ChromeOS was more experimental (pun intended) than practical, and it's sandboxed like hell. Although I can pin linux apps to the app menu, it has to boot up the linux vm first (unlike Android apps that "just works"), some peripherals like pen input don't work (unlike Android apps), I can't easily share files in and out of the VM (unlike Android apps), and the overall experience is removed and different from the overall desktop experience (unlike Android apps). The name of the feature also makes sure you know it's for "linux development." Even being Linux itself ChromeOS can't run linux programs easily, not to mention you can't at all change the default browser... except you could set a different default browser within the Android subsystem. You get the idea. What I'm excited about is that, by making Android behave explicitly more like ChromeOS, Android itself will become more standardised, and the work is already ongoing. Starting from Android 11 with 5.4+ kernel (and 13 for all kernel versions), Google is requiring device vendors to package drivers as a kernel module rather than maintaining a kernel fork. It's not full mainline but it's close; at least it will be the same kernel across every (new) android devices. I guess this is why we're seeing more and more device manufacturers promising longer update support; it's actually easier and attainable now. Aside from that, now Android is gaining ability to run linux apps. I don't expect it to go any better than in ChromeOS but this actually gives linux mobile apps a new market, for free!
We absolutely need Google to sell Android. The reason it's so hard for phones to have anything other than Android is because manufacturers are locked in a contract by Google in which if they provide anything else than Android, Google won't provide updates for their hardware. With this restriction lifted, it'd probably be easier for custom ROMs to support more phones.
Hell no, the last thing this world needs is more Consumer Software Platforms. Many devs already don't have their iOS and Android Version up to the same standards, if we now add 3 more competeting Platforms the App Problem is gonna get worse and worse.
So you think that whoever buys Android who will have to survive with just Android license, will let go all the captive manufacturer's market for no reason? And will allow competence to thrive by opening it more?

If this new Android allows me to use my phone as a desktop.. that might be reason enough to drop my laptop and just use my phone full time. So I'm down for it lol
@red5355dragon and a phone that supports display port over USB c which the pixel series didnt support until very recently. Are you talking about dex though? Because stock android doesn't have a task bar or anything it just makes the display bigger
Btw. any news about the Manjaro devs? Got the feeling they´re struggling with the time near updates. I'm still missing FF 132?! And the last months before the system prompted updates more regulary?! Any one else the same feeling? Thanks!
My 8bitduo ultimate is amazing but now it disconnects randomly every couple days. I really just want to use steam deck as a controller without the screen.
Chrome is open source. Such a sale isn't even possible other than the name. Anyone is free to make a competing product and they do. Someone at the DOJ seems to have missed that, in fact with this whole manifest v3 nonsense competing browsers like Brave may even overtake them.
Imho selling chrome is just not an option. Either its gonna be monopolized by some other big corp, or noone will want to by it. Open sourcing it or giving it to non profit would be more strategic, since google could still partially control it
Though unfortunately that will result in piles of ewaste, though I guess it's only in the short term and less ewaste in the long term. So good actually.
you sound really macho. Ive likely just had this lergy. (UK term meaning germs, from allergy)It wasn't too bad but it was worse than a common cold. Get well soon.
US govt is so dumb about this stuff. Going after Chrome and Android, both open source projects, while Windows has a much stronger lock on the OS market.
What’s the point of steam machines? A huge portion of steam users build their own PCs, shouldn’t we be instead pushing for the release of steam OS so we can install it anywhere, like on a custom HTPC?
I would like to see Valve capture console market share. I bet many people would be interested because there are games that cannot be played anywhere outside of PC.
The kernel would be unable to mount it. claiming it is an unknown FS. It should not damage the FS. And probably, someone will make a userspace FUSE driver for being able to use it anyway.
Bcachfs dramas never disappoint, only the guy from Malibal (which seems to have plugged left, right and video connectors into mains plug) can do better. Anyway the Brodie comment about it might be funny to view
imo using CoC to silence kent is unnecessary, but he absolutely gotta stop thinking he owns the linux kernel. Kent will be Kent, but atleast he needs to follow the process and principal like everybody else, bcachefs is not that much of a game changer
Because a streamlined hardware platform costs less money, is better supported, you don’t have to build it (which is a plus for most humans, PC building is an extremely niche hobby)… so many advantages
Eh, I dunno about that last bit on Chrome OS. As someone who also don't give two fs about Chrome OS and wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole, I'm glad it's dying. It should never have been created in the first place. People in schools should be using some Linux distro intended for education, well integrated with their backend. Doesn't matter to me if Chrome OS has more connection points with Linux, or if it was becoming a way for Google to contribute more to the Linux community, fact is I don't even want Google (or Microsoft) to have it's grubby hands on Linux... Android itself, plus Chrome is proof themselves that you don't want Google having all hands on open source projects in AOSP and Chromium because you are constantly running at the risk of them forcing something that weakens privacy and security for their own purposes. And in the end, you don't wanna become reliant on such an untrustworthy and unstable source for contribution. In a way, the drama with kernel contributors kinda denote that. Imagine it not being about bad behavior and cussing, but about a big corporation forcing changes like that because they are the main contributors financially. If Google wants to contribute, I'd rather them keeping a distance and doing it financially rather than participating in development - even if takes longer for things to happen. Which is compounded by the fact that they have monopolized several sectors of the market, which ruins everything - so needless to say that I agree with courts in all instances of Google having to be broken down and dismantled - along with the rest of big tech, I'll add. Yes, I do recognize that Google's participating into development has pushed Linux forward in several ways, but people also have to understand that their monopolization of the market has also killed tons of open source projects that could become viable if they didn't have unfair competition with Big Tech. You gotta understand that one of the main reasons why we still don't have a Linux distro for smartphones and tablets as a proper competitive option to this day is not just because no one cares about Linux, or that people can't see the advantages of having it at least as an alternative - it's because monopolies dominates the market so much that it dries interest and funds that would go for something like that. Market traction that is being actively hunted and destroyed by these monopolies strategies. People usually have an understanding that in a competitive market, it isn't bad or harmful to adopt tactics to get the market buying because this is what competition is in an open market, but this is absolutely destructive for causes such as open source philosophy. Good will development for all ends up trampled by private company power. A fancy marketing campaign convinces people of paying into walled gardens, and then the damage is done. It's somewhat similar to what Amazon has done to it's competition in the retail market, and in other segments like bookshops. For the company itself, to me it sounds like a good move. Because some of the worst decisions by Google have all to do with fears of cannibalization, infighting, internal competition products that leads the decision on priority in development and whatnot. In fact, I'm of the opinion that if Google didn't do similar moves in the past, it would have far better products these days. All this segmenting only leads to infighting, lack of focus, and development that purposely ignores key functionalities that products, service and software should have, to put it on stuff that "doesn't conflict with other Google products". Android would already be a fully functioning laptop OS today if it wasn't for Chrome OS. If Samsung could do DeX, it should be obvious that Android itself could've done a fully functional desktop mode by itself. They did not focus on it so far because of Chrome OS. Messaging, mobile payment system, their entire dysfunctional tablet situation, plus a whole ton of other stuff has been derailed by branching up into a number of different projects that all ends up killed in some way or another. I bet if they focused only on Android instead of branching towards Chrome OS, Google/Android TV, Fuchsia and a bunch of other crap, Android would nowadays be a way more feature complete, well functioning, flexible OS than what we have today. It's a focus not only for Google itself, but also for app developers. The ways that Android have been adapted not by Google but by other companies to run on stuff kinda speaks for itself. You can get a number of different devices, like HTPCs, smartwatches, electronics with some integrated functions, and a bunch of other stuff running some old version of Android that was customized to work with it. Samsung DeX, and other desktop modes by other smartphone brands are also an example of this. If groups of people working with AOSP can do this much with Android, it should tell that if Google had put focus on it's development for all these years, it would be several times better in handling different hardware and different situations. If they only had Android as an OS, they would've spent more time with app developers and launching strategies for stuff to work in different types of hardware, since it would be a single focus issue. And this is also a reason to wish for Google to be dismantled. Part of why their products are dysfunctional like that is exactly because it's all running under a single name, that doesn't know what to prioritize. People just develop stuff there hoping not to end up in Google Graveyard in the next few months, with not much commitment to it because they know their chances aren't great. There are some people in development teams there that must've been switched over to tens of other projects over the years. When stuff like that keeps happening, you simply cannot fully commit to anything. Why bother? But regardless of all of that, because I don't care about Google... it's more like eh, whatever. What I want in mobile space is whatever is needed to make open source projects viable. I want a Linux phone, tablet and PC. Big Tech is too far past the point of redemption already. As phone calls and messaging are also nowadays completely useless because of scammers and spammers, I think not too far into the future the thing will be to have a portable device with Internet connection, and everything will go through a messaging app system rather than mobile phone connectivity. That's the hope at least. The mobile call and SMS system is already on the chopping list, just like landline was not too long ago. It has become such an unreliable and dangerous communication format that I completely avoid using it. And something like Signal can already do voice calls, group voice calls, video calls, messaging, and everything else that is needed, in a private and secure manner. The problem is convincing everyone to also use it, particularly services and businesses. Hard enough when it comes to friends and families. But I'm going further and further away from the topic... xD There you go, sorry for the long text.
So we're just going to ignore that Torvold falls under the same rules but they're only ever executed on anyone downwind of him and his inner circle, eh?
For a novice that's would like not change to lenox system it seems to be for coders and developers and not for a general user. I like KDE and Nome. What's your suggestion?
OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta and Apple just training their AI with absolutely they find ANYWHERE including their employees personal data. And here we have Google in court. This justice is stupid
I think the Kent CoC drama is dumb. If you want him out because he pushes big, largely untested code, then punish him for that, don't lie to him and the community and make this about some mailing list drama from months ago. Lying about rules is VERY bad sign. If they want him to issue an apology over something he already worked out privately, that is entirely ridiculous. What's the point in an apology that neither person cares about?
You really didn't followed this case. THis guy is just impossible to deal with. This has been going on for months, whith developers having way more patience with their insults and arrogant behaviour that I would even remotelly have. If that's the only way to make him stop bullying everyone, is good.
This is my take as well. If there's an actual technical issue with the code he is pushing, that's more than enough to remove him. But making a performative 'code of conduct' issue is really dishonest and makes me not want to trust or believe when the Linux CoC board says anything. Also, it was alleged that the 'apology' clause was added to the code recently, not a standard part of it.
@@framegrace1 Making up rules so you can say he broke them or selectively applying rules because you don't like him is more toxic to deal with than any amount of personal insults he could throw. If you want to ruin any community, fill it with rules that no one follows and only punish people who you dislike. I've been following the bcachefs drama since the 6.11 merge window and yeah, Kent needs to back off with pushing largely untested code, but using a totally different rule that no one has cared about before to bully him into "changing" is corrupt and pretentious.
I think Android is better than ChromeOS. Android is the only operating system with a graphical user interface (no “Linux-runs-on-home-appliances” comments, please) aimed at the average user that has beaten operating systems from Microsoft and Apple in terms of market share in its sector.
It's too bad about bcachefs. Seems like BTRFS perfected without write holes and with some of the safety features of ZFS. Like the perfect NAS solution FS. Apparently there is room for only one Linus. Of course that's too reductive and the actions of trying to slip things past people, I think is the main issue but it still does suck its looking like we won't be getting widespread proliferation of the filesystem of the future. Also, seeing how people talk to other people in kernel mailing threads really makes me think that Linus has set an awful tone of communication that ends up being really toxic for many involved. I don't see any reason people can't be nice to each other even whilst being critical. It costs nothing to be civil.
If Google had to sell Chrome, couldn't they just make a Brand New Web Browser based on Chromium, because it is fully Open Source? And call it anything but Chrome, like The "Google Browser"? 😮
@framegrace1 The proposal only states that Google would have to sell off Google Chrome to another entity. It does not presently state that Google is not allowed to create another product in that space after the divestment of Google Chrome.
Right? Just feels like there are weird double standards at play in that regard where E eryone should just be civil, because being civil is literally free.

I feel like if Android were sold, the custom ROM ecosystem could really thrive. These days, you have to hunt for specific phones just to install other OS...
Or a company like Meta will buy it and completely locks it like iOS
As an Anti-Google Militant, how plausible it is that an FSF-like foundation were to maintain Chrome?
As much as we'd like that, it almost certainly won't happen. Google will find some loophole that allows them to continue maintaining Chrome, if not directly then indirectly.
You are so anti-Google that you use their products, you are the same as leftists who use products made in capitalism.
Before being anti-business, you should be anti artificial monopolies defended by state regulations and laws, and by taxes that destroy their competition.
Impossible.
That's what it looks like.
This is just such an ignorant world view, especially for a software environment with over-the-top code review practices and high barriers of entry. @@retagainez No, _that_ view is somewhat ignorant. No, I am not going to side with OP's conclusion that bcachefs is somehow malicious by design. No, the point is... there _are_ procedures in place to defend the kernel against malicious attempts.

I mean... objectively, it'd be silly not to conclude that Kent is just an arrogant baby who thinks he knows how to work in a team but in reality doesn't have a clue.

This is actually not miraculously at all. The fact that Microsoft software dominates the world market is important for the “national security” of the USA or, in other words, for the capabilities of its three-letter agencies.
Unlike Microsoft. Chrome is open source and has a ton of forks. Such a sale can't even happen. What would google be selling other than a name?

The code of conduct issue is that it doesn’t apply to all starting with Linus, so here we have a case in which no one knows who is allowed to insult others and who doesn’t, and which groups apply. Either make it explicit or don’t have a CoC that is optional depending on the individual.
Linus hasn’t insulted developers this way in a long time
@ Linus just broke CoC by expelling any possibly Russian, Russian-adjacent or Russian sounding contributor from the Kernel (1st violation of CoC), then promoted a hostile environment to any with Russian ancestry (2nd violation of CoC).
Well, yeah, he can be very difficult at times as well.
But so far I've not once seen him engage in any behavior which is an overt sign of anti-social personality disorder. Kent is not right in the head.
What comedy, Linus Torvalds frequently breaks CoC and we never even saw an apology once
Yes, but he is the "owner"! ;-)

It's about time to regulate big tech corporations and break their monopolies. Let's go after Google first, then Microsoft, Meta and Apple.
Well, but the vote made this basically impossible
Why Meta, though? Do they force you use their platforms? Probably not. If you decide to use their services, you're agreeing to their rules. It's their platform, so they get to set the terms.

Did the code of conduct apply to Linus Torvalds?

With this restriction lifted, it'd probably be easier for custom ROMs to support more phones.

yeah, i dont know if google contributes matey

Those are almost sick news c:
What’s the point of steam machines? A huge portion of steam users build their own PCs, shouldn’t we be instead pushing for the release of steam OS so we can install it anywhere, like on a custom HTPC?
I would like to see Valve capture console market share. I bet many people would be interested because there are games that cannot be played anywhere outside of PC.

Ibex is a kind of a deer that is common where I live, so I'm not sure what this has to do with coffee stained walls...
I think google wanted the admin change for this reason
What happens if you're using ReiserFS and you update?
Gets replaced to whatever FS is used.
The kernel would be unable to mount it. claiming it is an unknown FS. It should not damage the FS. And probably, someone will make a userspace FUSE driver for being able to use it anyway.

Switch to Windows.
hmm if I use GOOGLE chrome, I'd expect to use GOOGLE search... I change winders from Bing, when I have to use winders. yuck.
Oh no! Poor Nick! No men flew! :/ Get healthy soon! :)
I wonder how chromeOS will be named after selling Chrome
I will miss ReiserFS. Reiser5 seems dead too.
I wonder if Kent is going the same path as Hans .....
I never get why people want a steam console for the living room. It's called a PC. Just build what you want and stick it in your living room.
Because a streamlined hardware platform costs less money, is better supported, you don’t have to build it (which is a plus for most humans, PC building is an extremely niche hobby)… so many advantages
google breakup? waow (based based based based based based...)

Yeah, it's Wayland by default now! Finally! 😉
The Google's move entices chinese Huawei lol
By this logic Microsoft should sell Windows
So we're just going to ignore that Torvold falls under the same rules but they're only ever executed on anyone downwind of him and his inner circle, eh?

Make a video on HOW TO CONTRIBUTE IN GNOME.

Now if Kent could’ve just followed the rules it wouldn’t have been an issue at all. He has the temperament of a bratty child.
8:50 now THAT was a twist and a half...
If Google had to sell Chrome, couldn't they just make a Brand New Web Browser based on Chromium, because it is fully Open Source? And call it anything but Chrome, like The "Google Browser"? 😮
They can't do that, that's the whole point of an antitrust lawsuit.
@framegrace1 The proposal only states that Google would have to sell off Google Chrome to another entity. It does not presently state that Google is not allowed to create another product in that space after the divestment of Google Chrome.
According to this code, it's time to exclude Linus Torvalds himself from society.
Right? Just feels like there are weird double standards at play in that regard where E eryone should just be civil, because being civil is literally free.
