    Great Meghan glad you did get sorted. So on Friday past at 2am I was woken by some drunk people outside my bedroom window and around 5 mins after waking I started to feel a pain between my shoulder blades which then travelled down my left side to my fingers and then around to my chest. I was in a bit of pain all night which went away around 7am. So I got up and went to A&E, because my Dr's didn't answer the phone, by bus. Waited 15 minutes got triaged and then waited for bloods around 90 mins. I was told I'd had a heart attack 😞and would have to stay in. To cut a long story short I want to thank the NHS because I'm out as of yesterday having had a really good stay in a room of my own with my own shower and nurses fussing over me 🙂We need our NHS it is the star in our healthcare but it's going to go away if the government don't sort it out. I don't mind paying more taxes if it keeps me alive.

      The Government in the form of the Health Minister don't run the NHS. The Trust managers do. Their incompetence coupled with bad financial management and no central purchasing system are the root cause of the NHS problems plus all the idiots and their friends who clog A & E with a stubbed toe!

    non life threatening procedures you have to wait for, its that simple, the reason you wait for awhile to go down to theatre is because they are really busy usually because an emergency has happened and they need to be treated before you, be it a C section or a Crash victim etc or maybe a child is in need (children will always be prioritised ) or because they want to make sure your stomach is completely empty as every hour you wait drastically reduces complications. the NHS isn't perfect but its a gift that keeps on giving. id be hundreds of thousands in debt without it.

    Glad it went well and you had a good experience with the NHS, i'm the same as you. I've had nothing but good experience with the NHS, even though the staff are obviously stressed, they don't show it to you, so professional and so relaxed that it makes you feel relaxed. I have an auntie who works in the NHS as a nurse, i know the type of person she is so i would never doubt the NHS. She did tell me though and this was a little while ago that the 2 years that we had Covid here, people that needed a specialist all got backed up because people were not allowed to go to hospital or face to face appointments (such as gynecologist) and it's very difficult to get that 2 years back, you can't magically make loads more specialist in their field. So they are catching up with people that were booked in to specialist before Covid, that's why people since covid happened are having to wait longer to see people and why they are doing phone appointments because it's quicker. Also the waiting times in hospital once you are booked in is never trully accurate, always expect to wait longer because sometimes emergency patients come to hospital in the Ambulances and they take the space in the operating theatre or they take away your anesthetists/surgeons to help with the emergency. But i feel your pain, when hungry and thirsty it's the worst lol I see it's been 3 weeks since this video, so i hope you are feeling better. All the best :)

    I had foot pain after having Covid. I had an 8 month wait to see a consultant. It's a lot better now but still not completely gone.
    Just before Christmas in 2022 I was in a car accident. I had a subdural haematoma and they called a specialist whilst I was in A&E. They decided it was too small to need an operation and just kept me in hospital for couple of days for observation.
    So there can be long waits but in an emergency things will be done quickly.

    If you actually had needed to see someone you would have. After seeing my doctor last April within 3 weeks I had MRI and CAT scans, fitting for a headpiece for my radiotherapy and a feeding tube fitted. I had cancer at the base of my tongue and in my neck. Then i did 6 weeks of radiotherapy, everyday, with Chemo on each Tuesday. I'm now 10 months in remission and back playing cricket every weekend. I'm 62 and feeling 10 years younger than I did before it happened. The NHS rocks!

    The NHS is good..but not perfect...It only takes one link in the chain to fail for it to fall apart. My partner was suffering from back ach and cramps and had to visit the doctors(GP) on a number of occassions..but was told it was just back ach from work and just gave her pain killers...But it didn't help..it got worse..and eventually she got a scan and they discovery she had pancreatic cancer the size of a tennis ball......She died less than 6 months later...Now it's not to say if they had caught it earlier she'd still be alive now...but she would have had more of a chance and a little more time for sure...So the lack of GP's not taking patients problems more seriously is a problem in the NHS.

    • @MeganRuth
      @MeganRuth  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      oh gosh I'm so sorry for your loss. This isn't the first fatal instance of gender bias in the medical field I've heard of, though, and unfortunately it's not exclusive to the UK or the NHS. A lot of women worldwide struggle to have their symptoms taken seriously. There definitely needs to be improvement in this area and everyone needs to feel as though they're heard and their issues taken seriously.

  • @mattpotter8725

    The NHS is amazing, getting referred to a specialist not so much, you have to be persistent, almost pushy, but once you are part that stage they are amazing (and I don't blame the gatekeepers, the GPs for this either, I'm sure they are told to be quite strict so only those who really need to be referred are). I would hope that if you (or anyone) had been in considerable pain (not to say that you weren't) for a period of time the way they triage the most at need patients would have meant you were put to near the front of the queue.
    The NHS is being underfunded and run down by the Tories at the moment, but I feel you might have gotten lucky, if that's the right word to say (I feel bad for saying it), but at the moment I think more money has been put into the system to clear the backlog caused by the pandemic, not that this would matter. My mum has just had two operations for cataracts in each of her eyes and this was done quite quickly on the NHS (even outsourced to a private hospital, which I'm ok with in times when backlogs need clearing after extraordinary events, but in normal times shouldn't be necessary).
    I'm glad you are ok, I was slightly nervous watching this video, but it doesn't sound like a very nice condition to have to live with and so I'm glad everything has worked out well. When you commented you remember going into the anaesthesia room and then just remember walking up after the operation I thought it's probably a good thing, you wouldn't have wanted to be awake the whole time i expect!!! Also it's interesting you talk about having to wait 6 months, some people have to wait for years.

    • @MeganRuth
      @MeganRuth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matt! Yes a lot of what you say is true. There is certainly a backlog due to the pandemic. What I meant by having to wait if I was in more pain, was that there are a lot of women who have it much worse than me with issues such as PCOS, or endometriosis, for example, who would have a lot more issues more regularly. Women's issues as a whole are fobbed off a lot of the time as "not serious," so even if they were referred they may not even get to the front of the queue.
      I think the length of time depends on the specialty. I was told a few years ago getting a wisdom tooth removed would be a couple years wait... I definitely could not wait that long! That's why I got it done back in Canada.
      And no I would not want to be awake for the procedure! Absolutely not aha

    • @mattpotter8725
      @mattpotter8725 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MeganRuth You are quite right about it depending on the specialty, though don't even get me started on dentists here in the UK. I used to be in a relationship with someone who experienced a lot of pain, who it turned out had endemetroisis, we went to out of hours NHS care so many times (not A&E), as well as usual GP appointments, that it was not easy at all, and I wasn't even the one in pain. They fobbed her off until one time we were on holiday in Italy and was in so much pain that we had to go to the Emergency doctor. They have her a scan that day and spotted it and sent all the information to our doctor. From that moment on the NHS was brilliant, she had her operation and was much better afterwards.
      I on the other hand have had other issues, sinus issues, and would regularly have to go to see the GP, who would just give me antibiotics. After a while, and not wanting to become resistant to antibiotics I pushed for them to refer me to see a specialist, they took scans and in the end treated me with different medication. It was hard work though doing this, so I'm very glad your bf, Richard, pushed you into getting this looked at because without it you'd probably still be going through hell.
      I think the UK government are pushing people not to have to go and see GPs unless it is for something serious, but the problem is that without seeing the GP you don't know if it's serious in the first place (and sometimes I'm not even sure the GP is specialised enough to diagnose the issue and so will just try and fob you off), so when you do go something that may have been more easily treated before has become a lot more complicated. It's not an easy situation to solve, but I think it should be better organized than it is now and for that I blame those running the services and taking the decisions and not the doctors and nurses.

    • @marcuswardle3180
      @marcuswardle3180 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattpotter8725 No! You should worry that the cataract operation has been outsourced to a private contractor. That is exactly how the NHS is being privatised. It is now recognised that certain operations have to be outsourced because the people who do the operation, and that includes all the theatre operator staff; surgical nurses, are employed by private entities. The quicker they are brought back under NHS control the better.

    • @mattpotter8725
      @mattpotter8725 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcuswardle3180 I think it's ok if it is too get his waiting lists down after the pandemic, but any other time I agree with you. The NHS doesn't have the surgeons to do this procedure, and if they did after the waiting list is brought down all of them would be surplus to requirements, so what do you suggest, that the NHS employ extra staff to just let them go afterwards? To build extra facilities to be able to do these procedures just for them to be left empty after the backlog is brought back down? After the waiting list is back to normal no procedures should be done privately, but for extra capacity it has to be bought in.

    • @marcuswardle3180
      @marcuswardle3180 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattpotter8725 Under the “so-called” reforms of the nineties the NHS outsourced a lot of minor operations under the guise of reducing waiting lists. It had the desired effect but the procedure was never brought back into the NHS. We now have to keep outsourcing this to the private sector. I do not want the private health sector in this country.
