I'm a german fan and live near Hockenheim since 1963. I saw the changing the circle. When the great curves through the forest had been closed, it was like a cut in our hearts. Since then, Hockenheim had never been the same for us.

Having watched Formula One in the 1990s, I LOVED seeing the cars shoot through the VERY long straights in the forest. Nothing else like it existed in the entire sport. It also saw some of my favorite moments: Nigel Mansell's win in 1992 and Gerhard Berger's win in 1997. I believe Berger won twice here. He is definitely one of Austria's greatest drivers behind Niki Lauda and Jochen Rindt.

I loved watching this version of Hockenheim. You could really see how fast the cars were going. There were overtaking opportunities. Cars used to be set up aerodynamically for the fast straights but found the stadium section tricky . Even as a Brit I loved it when the stadium was packed with German Michael Schumacher fans cheering on their hero. New layout is a bit micky mouse and soul-less and not having the Clark chicane kept as part of the redesign seemed a slap in the face of history and a motoring legend.

This track was not loved by the drivers but was a fan favourite. It was the fastest track on the calendar for almost 40 years, only surpassed by Baku. The approach to the Clark chicane was a unique feature of those days. It was here that a Formula 1 car first beat the 100 m/s mark. Those folks that played the first Formula 1 computer games of the 80s and 90s know well how spectacular it was.
The new layout has no place in Formula 1. If a German Grand Prix ever returns the Nurburgring Sudschliefe remains the most interesting option.

This track had a particular trait. It was pretty unique in regard to all the, rather annoying tracks we have today. A good car in Hockenheim could be bad at other places, and the contrary could also be the case. It gave different type of cars a chance to shine.

I wonder if and how the grandstands were changed through the years. At the beginning of the 90s, the SF line itself was apparently not only widened, but shifted to the left. If you look at older track (e.g. see 6:25), the distance to the spectators is probably twice as large as later on (i guess at 1:49 it's a 1993 warm-up lap). But, maybe, the grandstands were rebuilt, too.

why did they even change it? can`t be environmental reasons looking at how many trees they cut down for the new section. The old layout integrated itself so beautifully into the forest. I don`t understand how F1 say they push sustainability, but then replace beautiful natural racetracks with giant glorified parking lots with no grass or any greenery.

Issues during the 2000 race (the one won by Rubens Barrichello, in that occasion parts of the pitlane flooded and in the race a disgruntled and drunk former employee of Mercedes invaded the track on the forest section to protest about his resignation.
This caused Bernie Ecclestone to blackmail circuit owners to make changes to improve safety off-track or he would move German GP to EuroSpeedway Lausitz (don't know if a rebranding of the Nurburgring race from European GP to German was also considered) or even cancel the German GP altogether and replace it by a race on Asia/Middle East (like the ones who debuted in following years like Bahrain, China or Turkey).
The options to Hockeinhein staff was or to bring down the entire perimeter around the (old) circuit, or to hire consulting services of Hermann Tilke who came with a solution who torn down a smaller area: the circuit they race until the present.
On the issue of not having preserved the old circuit, I think the pressure to not maintain it came more from Ecclestone that to any environmentalist group, basically because it have a precedent: in the reforms to Interlagos circuit (1989/1990), Ecclestone explicit forbade any layout who could have a oval variant, to prevent CART/IndyCar to race on the track too (monopoly? i think yes). Since the old circuit resemble an oval and CART was doing a series of excursions to Europe at that time (remember the race who Zanardi lost his legs? It was at EuroSpeedway Lausitz), so to prevent an even bigger schedule of races on the old continent he sabotaged any chance of the Champ Cars to race in a circuit like that.

Clark drove F1,F2, Touring cars and Formula Indy ,at the same time! Other times, other drivers, and the competition were much more pureand loyal! Today in F1 for example, all the fans can preview with a almost "certitude" who will be the winner and the second, third, fourth and fiveth, knowing Lewis or Verstappen and Russell and Leclerc or Gasly , well more and less for sure!
