    The political fervor behind this reminds me of the Galactic council meeting in John Ringo's Posleen series. I think the book in question is Legacy of the Aldenata? Basically humans got tired of being sacrificed to the horde of aliens, learning that one particular race manipulated it to their benefit. So they killed one of the alien controllers. Their rep, a warrior, went to a galactic council and when confronted on how the killing changed the balance of power he just goes, "Well that sucks." They viewed it as him putting the blame on them instead as they were the ones that uplifted humanity to serve as protectors. So in the end, it was their fault in the first place.

These strange creatures will even blame you for things that only happened in their own dreams... "You cheated on me!" Uhh, No I didn't, you only dreamed that! Literally, it was only a dream! You just woke up like less than one minute ago! "No! You cheated on me! With Jennifer!" Who the heck is Jennifer? "She was my friend in high school!' I was on the other side of the country when you were in High School... "You cheated on me!" Whatever...

    Meanwhile on a faraway world a tyrannical ruler is causing chaos for not just his own people but for others who he intended to enslave. Alex happened to be travelling with an armed escort when the offending race attacked his ship, Alex rushes to the cages where his animal friends were being kept, the soldiers are fighting the enemy aliens who consider them as just another potential slave race but oh no, they get their comeuppance when they encounter Alex & his beasts. The beasts decimate the enemy warriors & the survivours are thrown out of the human ship with a message for their emperor. The message being, "We humans are not for enslaving, if you threaten us again, you will feel the wrath of the Beastmasters." The Emperor does not listen & regrets it big time when years later, a crack squad lands on the homeworld, these are no mere soldiers, they have tamed the wild animals of the enemy homeworld & use them to overthrow the Emperor. The Human General has tamed the most powerful of all beasts, a Giant Golden Dragon! The Dragon kills the tyrant Emperor & frees the Planet's people. After the planet appoints their new Emperor, the Beastmasters are hailed as the galaxy's heroes. Days later, the Beastmaster General is relaxing in his bedchamber on board ship, his wife lying beside him fast asleep. He gazes at an old family photo opposite his bed, Alex & the predatory beast standing side by side. "Well Grandpa, all it took was a gentle touch. Your touch grew into something powerful!" But the General, unlike the old emperor, was no power hungry tyrant, he knew all too well it could have gone the other way, using beasts as weapons to conquer & enslave. But he was a human, before all else. He had his honour, he would not abuse his power, that was the highest rule of the Beastmaster Guild.

    The one big glaring issue with this story, is for a galactic federation of many planets to already exist before humanity joins it, they already have to know and do the core tenants of diplomacy. This story acts like diplomacy wasn't really a thing or even an option until humans came into the picture, but if that is the case then all of these worlds could not have already joined together as they say they had. Can't be any council if they couldn't get basic diplomacy off of the table to start with.

    Neat story, but just as a note there is a logic misstep I believe. When the story begins the galactic council was already a fully functioning thing. In order to get to that point they would of already needed to of developed working means of communication and conflict resolution. That sort of thing is a necessary step for any governmental body. The story seems to indicate that most sentient species can share a common core of understanding that would be required for the various planets to work together to get anything done at all let alone have a functional peace. So Alex being shown to do those things and it being a surprise to anyone, to me at least seems not really plausible.
    As for the whole beast whisperer thing, the original incident with the zellcor beast would seem to of been just a fluke of biology is believable, but then having him have the same sort of effect on many other beasts from different planets doesn't make sense when the story claims that it was pheromones that allowed the first interaction to work. It would of worked better to leave the pheromone concept out and just made the whole beast whisperer thing explained as Alex informing the council that humans have been interacting with big scary creatures commonly for thousands of years and maybe give him some sort of background related to that so when he saw the zellcor beast he recognized some of its traits from earth based creatures and understood how best to approach it.
    That would make it a bit more cohesive with more room for the situation to play out and not backing it into a scientific explanation that requires an additional layer of suspension of belief to work.
    That's just me being nit picky though, regardless it was still a good story.

    I like the story, but it’s a completely idealized version of humanity.

    • @shannanray6576
      @shannanray6576 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be fair it's a story about a few humans, primarily one named Alex. I can assure you that it's not idealized. There are those of us who do make friends with large and sometimes vicious beasts. We do value and respect others and we are good at negotiating. The idealization is in such a novel trick by a simple species being valued high enough to turn it into a branch of the galactic council.

    • @sycho-tech5104
      @sycho-tech5104 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@shannanray6576 yah I get that, but the story itself almost goes out of its way to make it look like it’s talking about Humanity as a whole. It doesn’t say that thees specific humans are rare, or wear specifically chosen, it does effectively say that Humans as a whole wear given the responsibility. probably with a LOT of oversight but still.
      I’m not saying there aren’t people who can tame viscous predators, I can think of at least 3 just off the top of my head.
      - theirs a guy in Canada (I think, might be the UK) who’s best friend is a grizzly bear. The bear actually works as an actor.
      - I know if a story of a guy in Russia who adopted a full blooded Gray Wolf as his dog, he runs an animal sanctuary (or it might be a nature preserve, I forget the details)
      - theirs videos on TH-cam if a woman who’s pet cat is a Black Panther. (I think it is, I’m not 100% in the species)
      There is absolutely a president that someone could see a giant murder lizard and not only want to pet it, but have said lizard wag its murder tail in response.
      It’s everything els that happens that feels highly generalized and idealistic. Even if that’s how Humanity Wants to be, for the humanity of today I’m 99% certain it’ll never get there.
      (That last 1% is because theirs a non-zero chance a catastrophe wipes out 2/3 of all humans on earth and by a literal miracle only truly good people are left alive to rebuild.

    Alex is flawed, he is supposed to have empathy, yet in finding and supposedly bonding with the Zelcor Beast, he then leaves it in captivity. That is not a good sign of Empathy, and in doing so, puts the rest of the story in question that Alex is not what he is being sold as.
    Basically, Alex acts like a Lawyer.

    • @dreamingdragon2455
      @dreamingdragon2455 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      From what I got the Zelcor Beast was probably born in captivity or at least raised in it so it would not survive in the wild. The beasts they had him bonding with appeared to be zoo animals and from the description of the enclosures it was a reputable one, not some roadside mockery that claimed to be a zoo. So well I agree Alex has flaws, he is human after all I do not agree that he lacks empathy.

    • @silent_stalker3687
      @silent_stalker3687 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Have you seen what happens to animals released into the wild?
      Best case they are on the low end of survival and will be killed off if another of their kind shows up.
      Worse case: they die alone like the whale in Free Willy that was released for marketing and was rejected by other whales.
      Now at most he could talk later about better holding areas.

      @@silent_stalker3687 If you want to kow what empathy looks like, watch the Video of Robin Williams visiting Koko the Gorilla. That Koko actually mourned his death, yeah, get some of that kind of interaction in a story, then I'll feel that empathy is present. When Alex left the Space Doggo, who had proved to be a very good boy/girl/critter it just felt like a slap in the face in regards to suspension of disbelief in regards to how someone who was capable of connecting emotionally would do.

      @@silent_stalker3687 Well, yes. Robin was friends, and visited Koko more than once but when he left her Koko was not left with beings who were afraid of Koko, or that only Robin was accepted by Koko and suffered because of his neglect.
      The Zelcor beast (Alex couldn't be bothered to name it) was neglected, and when it formed a bond for the first time in captivity it was dropped back into bondage and abuse when Alex decided there were more interesting Alien fauna to get personal attention by petting.
