- Wednesday "Wendy" Johnson was 51 years old when she died at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in June.
Family members said her death was heat-related and she began to feel weary on a hot day while working her job with the U.S. Postal Service. Johnson, who lived in Sanford, worked for the service for more than 20 years.

We need to figure something out. Mail delivery shouldn't be deadly. Especially when it's 60% junk mail anyway.
You …. Are on too something .. they dont wanna hear this
d.i.
@@ezone913God is going to get you for that.
Exactly. Junk mail should cost extra, but the poor bankers like Chase, probably need a break on postage.
I agree!
It was a heat stroke! I've had one before while unloading a semi truck, almost died. I was hot, then dizzy and started puking every where. I had no clue what it was until the hospital workers told me. Look out for your local mail man or lady💯
Thank you. I always appreciated it when a customer on my route would offer me a cold bottle of water.
Yes and heat in an enclosed area is ten times worse
🙏🙏🙏
That's horrible, I'm so sorry for the families loss ugh
It’s 2024 and THERE’S NO AC INSIDE OF A POSTAL TRUCK!!!!!! 😡 🤬
You keep the windows open and stay hydrated! AC can't help you if you are dehydrated!
This is definitely a bigger problem than hydration... Why isn't there AIR CONDITIONING in these trucks? Let's use our BRAINS ADULTS 🧠
No heat either. Whatever comes off the motor. No 4 x 4 in snow regions.
@renewashington791 No AC in mail trucks is ABSURD. We got plenty of money for illegals and Ukraine though.
There in Arizona at 116 for the past couple days and a 119 a few days ago. May she RIP and her family get justice.
Delivery drivers are essential workers and they deserve better🥺💜🙏🏽
No A/C after ALL these years?!? As much money as the USPS gets from everyone, they could at least have the decency to have air conditioning for their employees!
The family needs to SUE all day long, and it’s time for OSHA to start sending out fines to USPS ASAP!!!
They don't get any money from the tax payers.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) generates nearly all of its
funding-about $78.5 billion annually according to the
USPS’s most recent financial report-by charging users of
the mail for the costs of the services it provides
Yeah, they get a whole 73 cents from you to hand deliver a letter from one coast to the other.
USPS is broke, Einstein.
Recently, I spoke with a Postal worker and was told that the Post Office will be hiking rates again for the second time this year on July 14, 2024. What are they doing with the money?
@@1014halifax How much would you charge to hand deliver a letter 2,000 miles away? How much would you pay?
No delivery or USPS trucks should be without AC in this day and age......heartbreaking 😢😢

The heat stroke training just ended. WOW ...
No ac in 90 degree weather. That's torture.
@Christa. In Arizona it's 112 ok and we have Amazon and U.P.S. drivers they take water plus use g a A.C. IN A TRUCK THAT MAKE MULTIPLE STOPS HOW WOULD THAT WORK

This has happened many time before and this woman was in the back of this truck ,could not sit in the front as no room ,she was a supervisor.
Most people don't realize that heat can kill you even if you are an adult going about your day. Shame on USPS! Condolences for the family.
Then add we are now in most state facing a heatwave, 95 degree temperatures and can anyone take this in a metal truck with only a small fan for hours just about everyday. They are quick to raise prices but yet we get the same crappy services and nothing gest updated, those trucks are old and all you smell is the fume that comes out of them...I wouldn't be surprised if the heat and that carbon monoxide fumes is the culprit of her death.
And I always hear people brag about how much postal workers are paid.. apparently not enough because this is bizarre
@alaneofmyown it's a good job with benefits but yep, no AC. My mom retired from delivering mail. Half her career in Sand Diego, the other half in Las Vegas. She always froze water bottles and brought them with her everyday. Strong worker, she didn't complain but she knew this Vegas heat was a bitch.

I tell her to wear her sunscreen, keep her cooler filled with ice and water and take breaks often. She absolutely loves her job but no job is worth your life.
As a Person gets Older their health becomes more important.
I knew a young woman that died from high blood pressure. She also went inside and locked the restroom door. This is a bad issue
Yes very true but these companies do not care at all. All they care about is money and the job gets done.
Right
We do not know if she had a health issue, and this extreme heat and being in an over for hours could have happened ,has happened to others . We try dealing with this with just a tiny fan then add she was ,could not sit in the front as there is no room in that mail truck for someone else to sit in the front. Again she was a supervisor assessing the driver, maybe routes and more in the back of it for hours ,nit getting any ventilation. So even having not having caused this which is why after other deaths they should have decades ago updated these trucks, with air, redesigned these metal oven’s.
Thank you Captain Obvious.
Air should be mandatory in any mail truck
I would check carbon monoxide levels in her blood. Those mail vehicles have been known to cause health issues.
Carbon monoxide? Did you watch the story? METAL MAIL TRUCK,95 DEGREE WEATHER.

I quit a job (at 62) 5 months ago. New field for me and was excited working in an aseptic lab environment. No one told me about the unpredictable hours (sometimes 18- 20 a day!) and then if you called out the next day it was frowned upon. Even after complaining about the unpredictable schedule and not knowing what and when you would start or end I was admonished for taking consecutive days off. Even the 20-30 years olds were complaining!!! I'm not just out of college age and was going to work depressed daily. Once my supervisor sat me down, we had the conversation about life/work balance he pulled out 2 write ups for me to sign. Needless to say I DID NOT and simply walked away! I bet she did her job well sorry to hear about her passing
As a Full time City Letter Carrier and I heard that she was a supervisor riding in the back of the Postal truck. 1st let me say, I am assigned to the very same type of truth she was riding in and yes those trucks have no air conditioning. The 2 flap windows allowing air to circulate in the back are useless when it is hot. She was riding in a jump seat along with the rest of the mail that has to be delivered. She was doing a route inspection with the carrier and the route on a mounted route. A route inspection is completely different from the supervisor observing the carrier, in which the supervisor would tail the carrier in another vehicle for a few minutes and would be on their way. Carriers are not allowed to drive the truck with both doors open as UPS drivers do and driving with the back gate open is a violation. The small plastic or aluminum Kmart fan up front is of no use because it only blows hot air in the driver’s face. You can roll the left side window, however, you must be cautious of people reaching inside the truck grabbing mail from the tray ledge, while you’re strapped in your seat. Our union fought to have the carriers start early during the summer with the hopes that most of the delivers are completed by noon, which is when the sun is said to be at its highest. The suggestion was shot down only to have starting times pushed back later in the morning with some carriers leaving the office around 11 a:m and all deliveries must be completed by the end of the day. Management preach drink plenty of water, stay hydrated, yet balk at the comfort stops after drinking all those hydrating liquids. Our Union stress taking mini breaks in addition to the 2 breaks, however those extra breaks only pushes your time in the field back and you are out in the field much longer. I keep an Igloo cooler filled with ice in the truck everyday only to have the water melted before the completion of the day. Let’s not discuss that you are apparently sitting on top of the engine because the floor surround your seat gets very hot you actually can cook an egg or make a cheese melt on the floor. My deepest condolences go out to her family. They are fully aware of the condition of those tombs on wheels, yet this is what we carriers have to deal with on a daily. Someone suggested that they go back to the days of old when carriers walked the route. That is not going to happen because for management, a carrier can deliver to more boxed by truck than on foot, as the Postal Service is moving to make deliveries with multiple boxes on 1 post. The carrier can knock out 12 delivers driving while the walking has completed maybe 4. The pay and the benefits are good, however, the job is hard and they will try to extract every penny you are paid out of you with work. The job is not for the lazy person aka a slacker.
And the scanner’s have GPS. If you take an unauthorized break in an unauthorized location, you might get questioned about it by someone in supervision.
Thank you for your input. This is truly concerning and disgusting
Prayers to the family. I can't function in the heat, I get light headed often, I can imagine. 💜💚

There's no way in hell I would have attempted to get in that truck!!! I would have told my boss to get somebody else to drive it and I'm going home!
CRY ME A RIVER 😂
@corajones1980
You’d be looking for a job
LAWSUIT AGAINST USPS!!! GET THAT BAG!!
Salute to the postal workers. The work in all type of weather
So sad !
Thoughts and prayers. For the family
Supervisors have to take better care of their coworkers especially during a heatwave.
As a postal carrier and LLV driver of 32 years, NO employee should be in the back of those vehicles! We’ve had in our station, postmasters and supervisors who have ridden in the back of those vehicles on route inspections while they sat on anything from a milk crate to a bucket to a kitchen chair. If the carrier would have to slam on the brakes, the person in the back would probably end up in the drivers lap, or worse yet, through the windshield. Just imagine if the vehicle rolled over! It’s somehow okay for management to circumvent safety rules. There are only 2 small vents in the backend of those vehicles. Again, NO person should be riding back there! Take it from a previous user, those vehicles are ovens in the summer and freezers during the winter!!
I agree about the LLV’s. Just a small fan on the dashboard for hot weather and barely any heat for the cold weather.
This is so sad.. Poor lady. My God😔💔
Prayers for her family! 🙏🙏🙏
USPS Must DO Better!
My sincere condolences to the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you 🕊️🌺🙏🏽
This is extremely sad
I worked out in the weather my entire life.-- With No AC.--- The human race survived for thousands of years, without AC.
Nowadays most people bodies are accustomed to air conditioning. Years ago my elderly aunt disappeared for many hours in high ninety degree weather. She was found inside a hot barn. The doctor said she survived because her home did not have air conditioning.
I worked telco installer in Florida for many years, none of the trucks had AC. Summertime in Central Florida, high 90s was normal but no matter the temperature, we worked, climbing poles, hanging lines, digging trenches, crawling through attics, so there is more to this story than just heat.
@@msomething3579 not necessarily. each person is going to respond to heat differently.
@@jusletursoulglobaby You’re exactly right.
Times have changed. The planet is warming. A lttle over a decade ago, the summers were hot, but not like it is now.
@@Portia-oc6mr .. it's the same .. in the 70's in a mobile home park the black top was very hot it was brutal you could fry eggs on it in southern California Fontana California
@@Portia-oc6mr Yes, 100 degrees is hotter now than a few years ago,..
I'm so sorry about the loss of your mom. She was beautiful. ❤
No job worth your life..i I'll call in on bad weather days.. get fired?? At least I'm alive.. PEOPLE NO JOB WORTH YOUR LIFE..
Sorry to hear this lady looked like a Very Loving Person Rip ma'am
So sorry for your loss and yes no air conditioner is awful. Larger fans would have helped some but not using anything will suffering the airflow out of your body.
So sorry to hear this. Prayers for the Family
The truck was built by the lowest bidder, it is a heat and hazardous built death trap, there is not even any heat shielding for the transmission, the truck is top heavy and flips over easily.
My sincere prayers for her family and friends..🙏🙏🙏😥😥😥.....
To all of the postal delivery companies:
DO BETTER!!!
The “leaders” sit in their cozy air conditioned offices and homes while good people like Wendy Johnson suffer and lose their lives. It’s not right and I hope the family sues the brakes off of the USPS!
There needs to be a nationwide law put in place in her honor and changes need to be made now!
So sorry to the family, friends, associates, and coworkers for your loss 💐
May family and friends that will miss her in their lives find some peace comfort and solace
😔
🙏
Them benefits was not that important. Im sure she couldve called 911 before dying. Smh what an unfortunate event
Overheating is like overdosing: no time for 911. Have you never been overheated? You have to cool down RIGHT NOW!!!
@@KeepMoving4wrd u don't just overheat out the blue. There are s/s before you get to that point
