Is there any more - I was listening to this series (well, trying to listen) on test match special overnight on LW., with transistor radios and batteries running out at critical moments, before going to school, bleary eyed and never sure who won!
One thing that has always worries me is the lack of commentary from the other side of world series cricket..1977..1980...there were some close matches, and some very good players...who never played on.
You know I have always wanted a VHS or DVD of this series. I found it very interesting due to Geoff Boycotts fine account of this tour called "Put To The Test". Where did you find all this footage?
@@peternagy-im4be that's right. Also excellent. In The Fast Lane. Thanks for these videos. Superb. Been looking for years for something on this series.
when the club cricketer play test cricket for their country Let them never forget the five - one drubbing we gave them Only player from the England team to get in their team Brierley
Let's be honest...even the highlights were a bit dull to watch. Cricket has come a long way since those days. We have to be glad for the sake of the game. To be fair...I wonder how many more runs Boycott, Gooch, Gower would have got without those rediculous, dangerous boundaries!. They were enormous. The ropes these days would have been about 2o yards further in!.
One of the worst Australia sides ever, decimated because of WSC but unearthed two stars for Australia in the future captain Allan Border and Rodney Hogg.
Irnically some of the best Australian players in this series would go to tour South Africa in 1984/5 and therefore make themselves unavailable for the '85 Ashes (players such as Hughes, Yallop, Hogg)
It Was In Effect An Australian Second Eleven A lot Of Guys Who Probably Never Would Have Played Test Cricket Had Marsh Lillee The Chappells Etc Not Played World Series Cricket!😒🏏🇦🇺
Just curious. Was Border knocking on the door of the test side regardless of wsc or would he have had to wait until the likes of McCosker, Walters and the Chappel brothers had called it a day.
@@alancjones64 He got into the Australian Side because of two centuries scored for New South Wales in Sheffield Shield, then made his debut in the 3rd Test of the series, showed his class in the 4th Test remaining unbeaten in both innings. Dropped for the 6th test after a failure i the 5th, but was back in the side for the two test series against a full Pakistan team, scored a century and two fifties. Then later in 1979 toured India and scored 500 runs in the six test series. Therefore when the ACB started to select the Australian WSC players again in the Australian Summer of 1979-80, he kept his place in the side and did not miss another Test until he retired from international Cricket in 1994.
Wasn't the worse Aussie side ever, unfairly compared to full teams. And the series with better batting, captaincy, Austria could have squared the series.
@@MrHistorian123 I think the OP means he was awful to watch because he was so defensive and his entertainment value was low, he did actually praise Boycs for not giving his wicket away.
Gower was just awesome to watch!
Randall too!
Gower always had good timing of his batting.
Never seen any of this series before. Very amused to see Randall get his own back on Boycott for Trent Bridge 1977
To be fair to Randall, Boycott would have made the run if he had sprinted in a straight line towards the other end and run his bat in earlier.
A pleasure to hear Keith Millers voice.
Hurst looked a fine bowler, sharp and should have had Randall lbw with what seemed like reverse swing possibly.
It was painful watching Brearley bat. He was simply not Test class.

Lovely to hear the late Jim Laker commentating.

Randall returning the favour to Boycott for Nottingham '77 ;)

I read that book. He did a similar one on the West Indies tour

9:26 was plum LBW , it was just out you didn’t even need to see a replay ffs.
Not out sir. Thin edge.
thank heavens for DRS
I cannot say often enough that cricket is always best when played in a gentle-manly, sporting sprit.
I *hate*coarsenesx, sledging, etc. Hate it!
shocking umpires.

And Kim Hughes

Randall lbw twice but not given. Terrible umpire.
Boycott was awful, however, he never got himself out..... ever!
Awful enough to score over 8000 test runs and to average 47 in tests.
How many test runs did you get and what was your test average?

Why was he "awful"? What an ignorant comment.
