Diagnosing a faulty temperature gauge: 1982 Honda Silverwing GL500

A local shop misdiagnosed the faulty temp gauge on my GL500. They thought it was a bad sending unit, but it turns out that the ground wire from the 7 volt regulator was unplugged by the previous owner when they upgraded the headlight.
