I apologize for the video being a couple of minutes longer... but it took months of planning and preparation to do this. I wanted to leave a bit in there about the boat so I wouldn't lose the memories! The noise was awful though (Macaws have a horrible song).
I didn't know most of the rain in the Amazon comes from the Atlantic!
So this is what happens when you combine a battery operated Miro LC320S high speed camera with an incredibly specific spot of dirt that Macaws LOVE. It took several days and lots of modes of transportation to get there, but we took a new MIRO (www.visionresea...) to one of the most remote research facilities in the Peruvian Rainforest. The footage we obtained was incredible.

This is why we can't have nice things! Yeah, I thought long and hard about this before I uploaded. I could have made it shorter and increased the potential for virality...... but then I decided not to dumb down the science and show how involved these things actually are..... I still have bug bites on my arms a month later. You'll see in the next episode if you're a subscriber.
Your slow-mo video helped me observe, the birds when flying, take full wing to apply force and when retracting, they fold so, they have less force on going back.
And also, I see the feathers are close to each other when pushing the wind down (when going up) and they are not tightly packed when retracting, like letting air through the gap between feathers..!
Wow, science is amazing, definitely, I'm jealous of this generation kids, with all the practical (visually) help they get by people like you.

As an pilot, I always appreciate high res, slow motion bird flight. The stroke is never quite what I expect, and is different from species to species. Fascinating.
I'd assume the "flashing" is because parrots are considered prey animals, just like deer etc. So they all release the cliff at once because one of the birds became startled or scared by something which startles all the other birds into thinking something is wrong, or that there is a predator in the area which causes them all to flee at once since parrots are flocking birds and take cues from birds around them. Deer do the same thing, one gets scared and they all flee at once to avoid getting caught by the potential danger. c:

I was thinking that very exact same thing. I noticed that it was only one parrot that started to take off and it caused a chain reaction.
Works for humans too. Kept me from getting arrested once. If they drop beers and run, don't ask, just run. It works. ;-)
Stay tuned. That one took us 4 days, so obviously I'm going to make an entire video on that once it finishes rendering. These things involve an incredible amount of post-processing as you can imagine. I will tell you this, we were shooting for 8 Gigapixels so we could shatter the previous record..... we got 50. We giggled like schoolgirls when we figured that out.

Why the birds flash is actually easy to understand. One of the birds farted, and they were like "Hell na, I'm outa here."
Sorry it took me so long to upload... This was quite an undertaking! I'm glad to be home.
I've never sat down and watched a channel that explained how a swash plate works on a helicopter and then seen slow mo birds this is so cool.
Such awe-inspiring beauty. Words cannot begin to describe the beauty of these birds in their natural habitat.
More interesting is how they're divided by color. Notice how the greens are to the left, blues to the right and the single red is at the bottom 3:40
+Adamantiis I think that the green birds are "Mealy amazon/parrot" birds, or perhaps Military Macaws, and the blue/red are Blue & Gold/Scarlet Macaws respectively (I'm no expect haha). My suspicion is that they're grouping up for mating purposes. :)

Surely, deposited rainwater would be lacking in sodium anyway - it's been naturally distilled hasn't it, regardless of how far it is from the Atlantic?

yeah i was wondering the same thing so I just ran a quick search and I didn't find anything about sodium being volatile at all let alone at temperatures here on earth so unless someone clarifies this for me, I don't think his hypothesis has any support.

You guys need to study chemistry then. There is nothing wrong with the hypothesis.
Distillation, just like most physical and chemical processes, are complete/replete in theory. Not necessarily in practice. But that is like high school theory. Any advanced student of chemistry should be able to tell you that most of the forms which hold the expression for particle or molecular arrangements are actually in constant flux and so the dogmatic denotation used to teach students is sometimes taken for granted as: what is actually real. When it is not. A constant dynamic exchange between all forms of particle or molecular arrangement is actually what is real. This includes the dynamics related to the formed micelles surrounding sodium ions(aka dissolved salts).
Sodium is a soluble ion, if you check the solubility chart you will see it does not precipitate out. The only way to remove sodium ions is to evaporate the water to the point where there are no ions left in the recondensed water. But distillation is a process which --"may result in essentially complete separation (nearly pure components), or it may be a partial separation that increases the concentration of selected components of the mixture. In either case the process exploits differences in the volatility of the mixture's components."-- and often multiple distillations is necessary for the acquisition of a pure product.
I also am no expert of climate or weather dynamics but it is worth pointing out that all of the figures of chemistry data/charts, for purpose of reference, were made/recorded under what is called STP or Standard Temperature and Pressure. This is the average temperature and pressure of a human temp-regulated laboratory roughly at sea level.
Biologists and chemist have to change the formulas to calculate for their geologic position and the resulting affect that has on the temperature and atmospheric pressure. This is because the diversion from STP necessarily changes the dynamics of every possible aspect of chemistry and physics under observation. I would not find it surprising if the experts studying it related that the unique dynamics of pressure/temperature in the upper atmospheres also plays some role in the apparent confusing simplicity of some educational resources verbiage regarding the physical processes of distillation..

Whats is not clear about flashing? Its so obvious that one bird flies away because it might noticed a danger and scares or gives signal to other birds as well. Daaaaaaa
That's exactly what I was thinking. Each bird follows the typical flock algorithm which is: "If the guy next to me freaks out and flys away, I should do the same."

destin, as smart as you seem to be, salts, minerals and other solutes are left behind when h2o evaporates. i dont think your statements at around 5:50 are quite accurate. Na (sodium) does not evaporate with water.
also i very much enjoy and appreciate your videos and the effort put into them, but i dont feel comfortable donating money to you for your supposed college fund for your children. you suggest the money will go to your childrens' education, but you seem to be instead using money to fund these ventures. seems to be a not so ethical pitch for donations. id be more inclined to donate and it would be more honorable if you simply asked for donations to help fund your efforts and videos. just sayin.

How can a rainfall bring sodium? This makes no sense to me. Water evaporates from the ocean, leaving minerals behind.
+Julius Bernotas I looked into this a bit, and the answer I found was that Not all the sodium or minerals in the water evaporate, some are still left in the water.
Well, the same reason why there's a low sodium level in most drinking water. If you drank pure water, you're tongue would become highly irritated.
I'd say this is about the most beautiful shot I've ever seen in my life. How did I miss this for so many years.
Given the particular birds involved, this is one of the most beautiful slow motions I have ever witnessed.

Macaws in my opinion are the most beautiful bird on the planet, they are truly stunning. I have a parrotlet so I have an absolute love for parrots:) and these are so beautiful!
It's so freaking beautiful. I remember when I was younger I'd get this feeling of amazement all the time and something about the way the feathers on the birds' wings moved in the air brought it slamming back. Thanks for sharing, Destin.

Oh yes, about more than 7 hours of attention a day at least, potty training if you don't want them pooping everywhere, they live on to 70 years as their average lifespan so you may have to include them in your will. Also you're going to have to have space in your house for them, and the money to take them to the vet which is $500 if nothing is wrong. That's it. If you can provide all of this, by all means go get a macaw! They're good companions to have and act like children. If you can't meet all these needs, maybe get a smaller bird, like a conure, or a cockatiel.

I think the 'flashing' is like a group gesture of excitement that can be easily prompted by one individual. Like how a clap heard at the end of a theater show would prompt everyone to clap, and how someone jumping in a rock concert would prompt most others to jump along.

Yes, I considered it.... but in the end I decided that the natural colors were so incredibly mind blowing that I didn't really need to "fake it". I wanted to keep it true to reality which was the most amazing display of colors I had ever seen with my eye.
That being said, you have a great point. The human eye is MUCH better at dynamic range than the camera. Perhaps making it pop would be truer to what my eye saw. Interesting thought.... sounds like another episode.

Love this kind of stuff. I was supposed to go on a photography expedition to Peru with a group when I was in college, but I was the only one who paid up and so the trip got canceled. The equipment you guys have dwarf what we would have been using back in the late nineties.
