a lot of people are angry that Bruno apologizes, but abuela doesn't apologize to Bruno, but I think she does in the song. "I'm sorry I held on too tight, just so afraid I'd lose you too. The miracle is not some magic that you've got, the miracle is you." She is singing this to her children, including Bruno. ♥ Besides, the movie is obviously the beginning of another story, and I like to believe that abula, having realized her mistake, begins a journey of reparation to her family. It doesn't happen on screen entirely, but I believe it happens.

And as for Bruno apologizing, well, the guy just spent more than ten years in the walls wallowing on his and his family's fate. He's got mental issues from his chosen isolation while also hearing people talking bad about him. Of course upon coming back, he'd be a nervous wreck and would so desperately need to make sure the others accept him, of course he would apologize, even though he didn't do anything wrong.

Notice: 1 ) Dolores was matter of fact and shrugged about Mirabel not having a Gift, like it didn't matter that much to her; Antonio said he wished she had a DOOR, not a Gift; and that Mirabel is the only one Luisa would confess her stress to. Most of the family relationships in this movie are healthier than in most other Disney movies.

But it was kind of mean seeing as the whole song was clearly designed to avoid answering the question and she mentioned Dolores could hear the whole thing from a mile away so knew what she was doing and punked her out in front of the kids anyway

I think that Mirabel is her Abuela's successor--neither of them have powers, but both were sources of the miracle. Abuela's miracle was wrought by grief, pain, tragedy and sacrifice; but she lost sight of what really mattered once she started seeing & judging her family solely on their gifts, rather than as people.
Mirabel suffered as well, but the source of her miracle came from her reaching out to her family & truly understanding them as humans who felt restricted by their gifts. She also finds a new level of understanding & compassion with Abuela, too, and thus bridges the disconnect (or "cracks") that had been building within the family. The house was rebuilt--as a family & community--with stronger foundations based on love & understanding, rather than magic, which was made possible by Mirabel. So she's the new Abuela, and both of Bruno's visions came true!
I feel like Isabella resented Mirabel for being giftless--with those gifts come extra expectations & burdens, right? She probably assumed Mirabel had more freedom & felt less pressure, so she's actually secretly jealous. The vision of Mirabel hugging her sister was another clue that she had to truly reach out & discover what was important, thus fixing the breach (another set of "cracks") that had kept them at odds.
Anyway, I absolutely love your reaction, and I'm glad I stumbled upon it!

Another theory is that the original miracle was the result of Pedro’s love for his family and the need to give his children a future. That love and hope created the candle, but it also was Mirabel’s motivation. She embodies Pedro’s gift. In the end, she forced Abuela to realize that the miracle had fed her fear and trauma so she lost sight of the fact that the original miracle was created by love so that the children (and grandchildren) could grow.
The story is such an embodiment of many immigrant experiences. The older generation sacrificed a lot and went through trauma to give their children a better life. And though they often succeed, the children can struggle with the pressure to honor their parents’ sacrifices. So that leads to the children feeling the need to be perfect/strong/successful without complaint.

This is a perfect breakdown! My theory is that Mirabel's gift isn't visible but she's got psychic abilities. She was able to see things others weren't. She was the gift. She was right about everything. Even when Bruno was in doubt she somehow just knew there's something deeper going on. Poor Mirabel and Bruno didn't deserve all the unfair treatment.

There are a lot of very subtle physical and facial cues that I missed my frist watch through. Isabel is terrified to marry Mariano. Pepa is deflecting her grief over losing Bruno into anger to deal with her feelings, because her emotions trigger her powers, not to mention that whenever she "has a cloud" Abuela expects her to get rid of it and no one ever addresses WHY she is having those emotions. Isabela resents Mirabel for not having a power and thinks Mirabels life is sooo easy becuase she has no pressure/resposibilities, not to mention her parents paying attention to Mirabel because of her lack of powers, where as Mirabel resents Isabela for having powers and being accepted by the family and being the "golden child".

  • @deecilla5087

What I never saw mentioned by others is that at the end, the magic of the family extended far beyond the house and the family. It shone throughout the whole village. For the longest time, the villagers kept on relying on the Madrigals and, for the first time during the ending of the film, they were the ones stepping up and helping the family in their hardest moment in their life. Abuela's miracle extended to the Madrigals and formed the core of the village. The aftermath of Mirabel's journey extended to the whole community. I think it opened the eyes of everybody that together they could accomplish so much and they were shortchanging themselves by relying so completely on the Madrigals. Everybody has worth and Mirabel showed them that.

  • @kristinw2600

I've watched a lot of reaction videos, and I think this is the first one where I've seen someone realize that Bruno's vision shifted between Mirabel breaking everything and her saving everything because she had to do both - with Isabela. Lots of people get it during Dos Oroguitos, but to get it when she's making up with Isabela is seriously amazing. That's the whole point. The whole foundation of the family needed to change, Casita had to crumble, they had to start again to put everything on better ground. Abuela gave them what they needed to survive, but they're past the need to survive now and it's time for them to flourish, and Abuela's survival mindset wouldn't let them do that. Everyone was too locked in on "be useful, be helpful, and if you can't be helpful then get out of the way" instead of "be happy". Just like the hug was both Isabela and Abuela, but the hug with Isabela had to come first so they could break down the walls (literally) and then the hug with Abuela let them rebuild.

Something that helps this movie stand out is that while there's a big problem to be solved, it isn't because of some villainous "big bad". There's not some contrived or convoluted plot to have to battle. Instead, we get to focus on character -- the trials and tribulations (and unintended consequences) of the miracle without the distraction of raiders or real estate developers or some jealous long-lost relative trying to take over. Just a family (well, a privileged family) trying to sort out their family stuff. (Though, to be fair, that capy looked a little shifty. :-)

Poor Mirabel in the beginning when she's waiting for Antonio to get his gift. There was no way for her to come out of that feeling great. I bet that part of her was both dreading and hoping that he wouldn't get a gift, because on the one hand, she wouldn't want him to feel the way she felt when she didn't get one, but on the other hand, it would mean that the problem was with the magic, not her. However if he did get a gift, then she was the problem, and she would stick out even more in the family. Plus she would lose the one person who understood not having a gift. He was probably her best buddy in that sense, until he got his gift and she became even more left out.

I like how in this movie, when Mirabel and abuela talk in the end and abuela says "it's broken because of me," Mirabel doesn't say anything like "it's not your fault" or "it's okay" or whatever, which I feel like would've been in a lot of movies. Instead she says they can fix it and rebuild, and acknowledges the struggles her abuela went through. But no 'forgive and forget' type of thing. Abuela acknowledges she did wrong (which, considering who she is, is a miracle in and of itself) and Mirabel lets her know that it can still be fixed and she can still change and they can still heal, together. Wonderful, healthy example of how to receive an apology when you haven't forgiven the other person yet.

Your comment on whether telling someone their future makes it happen reminds me of the scene in the Matrix when the Oracle tells Neo not to worry about breaking the vase, and when he says "what vase?" and looks around for it, he bumps the vase and knocks it over, and she points out that if she hadn't said anything, he probably wouldn't have broken it. It's a really interesting concept, how telling someone their future could impact it. For example, the guy in Encanto who Bruno said would grow a gut may have decided not to bother keeping up any healthy eating or exercise he was doing when he heard the prophecy, which would have led to it being fulfilled. Or maybe Dolores never bothered trying to talk to Mariano when she realized she loved him, because she believed in Bruno's vision that he'd never love her back, when we see later that he had just never noticed her, probably because she never tried to get his attention.

Wow you are one of the few(the only one so far, but I haven't seen all reaction videos) who understands that the family needs to be broken before it can be healed and Mirabel's role in it. Of the stories Luisa and Bruno are the saddest to me.
Luisa has had to do things since she got her gift at age 5. As she is now 19 that means 14 years of constant work. If you pay attention in the movie you see that she is constantly running around doing things that require huge strength. I mean they demand she reroutes a bleeding river, how insane are they? With 14 years of work and no rest no wonder she sees rest and relaxation as a fantasy that is unobtainable.
Bruno gained visions from age 5. When Mirabel was 5 he had 35 years of demands for visions only to be cursed at for giving them. Then Mirabel's strange vision made him decide 'f*ck it I'm leaving this hell hole', but he couldn't leave so Casita made room in it's walls for him. 35 years of visions that get you yelled at will make you superstitious. It's amazing how sane Bruno still is after that and the ten years living in the walls.
What is funny though is the song 'We don't talk about Bruno' is a madrigal with the main part when they set the table. A madrigal sung by the family Madrigal.

I loved your reaction - definitely one of the better I've watched.
Have Disney animated films always been so good? I think it depends on what you're looking for. Disney (and Pixar) have definitely been doing the whole, "create a visually and musically beautiful story, but it's actually about trauma" thing for a minute and I'm here for it. With Encanto, I think we can all connect to a degree with the feelings of alienation, loneliness and inadequacy present in Mirabel, as well as Alma and Bruno in particular (obvs the whole fam has their issues, too).
This one ranks up there with Coco for me; they both explore similar themes of family, trauma, denial of painful histories and reconciliation. I have to give Encanto points over Coco in one way, though, because instead of doing a time skip over the harder parts of healing like Coco did, Encanto doesn't shy away from the real work of reconciliation (even if it's a bit rosy about it). I don't think you can watch the scene between Alma and Mirabel at the river and not fully sob - either as a reaction to Alma's despair or Mirabel fully understanding, forgiving and appreciating her grandmother.
Also, just wonderful use of metaphor with the original encanto as a trauma response. Yes, it protected them, but it also closed them off to their own past - I think there is a reason why the mountain remains split even after the second miracle.

Fun fact: The song during Abuela's flashback, in English, is Two Caterpillars. When Abuela gets the miracle in the flashback, the lyrics are about chrysalises. And the lyrics of the reprise after Abuela and Mirabel reconcile are about butterflies.

Encanto...

Butterflies. Every single scene in this movie has them. Some examples of many:
    1) Butterflies are embroidered on Miravel's blouse and skirt.
    2) The candle has a butterfly pattern on it.
    3) Abuela wears a butterfly-shaped decoration on her dress.
    4) One of the Casita's walls is made of bricks with butterfly-shaped holes.
    5) No talking about the swarm of yellow butterflies in the end...
And those are just some of them

Here are the English lyrics to Dos Oruguitas (Two Catepillars) it’s rly important to the theme of the movie:
    Two little caterpillars
    In love and yearning
    Spend every evening
    And morning learning
    To hold each other
    Their hunger burning
    To navigate a world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Together in this world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Two little caterpillars
    Against the weather
    The wind grows colder
    But they’re together
    They hold each other
    No way of knowing
They’re all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
    They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing
    Oh, little caterpillars
Don’t you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It’s your time to grow
    To fall apart, to reunite
    Wonders await you
    Just on the other side
    Trust they’ll be there
    And start to prepare
    The way for tomorrow
    Oh, little caterpillars
Don’t you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It’s your time to grow
    To fall apart, to reunite
    Wonders await you
    Just on the other side
    Trust they’ll be there
    Start to prepare
    The way for tomorrow
    Two little caterpillars
    Cocooned and waiting
    Each in their own world
    Anticipating
    What happens after
    The rearranging?
    And so afraid of change
In a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down
The world will never stop changing
    (Never stop changing)
    (Never stop changing)
    (Never stop changing)
    Oh, butterflies
Don’t you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It’s your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite
    Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
    Don’t look behind you
    Fly till you find
    Your way toward tomorrow
    Oh, butterflies
Don’t you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It’s your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite
    Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
    Don’t look behind you
    Fly till you find
    Your way toward tomorrow
    Oh, butterflies
Don’t you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It’s your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite
    Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down

  • @Lakeze
    @Lakeze 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fun fact:
In Bruno's vision (when mirabel is there to see it) you can see the butterfly land on some leaves before we get to see a distorted hug. If u look closely at the scene near the end of the movie where the butterflies start swarming the lake, a butterfly lands on the same exact leaves the same exact way as in the vision. You can even see Mirabel realizing that when she looks at it real quick after it lands. Meaning the reason the hug was distorted at first was cuz Mirabel was gonna be hugging Isabella and Abuela but the vision went to focus on the hug that needed to happen first for the rest to happen, which was Isabella.

You should watch Moana with the songs also written (at least some of them) by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It may be not as deep (it was an earlier step on the Disney journey) but it also has a young female hero who wants to save her family (and tribe). Actually it was the first Disney movie when the princess (Moana is the daughter of the chief) had no romantic interest.
