    Thing that impressed me most is that this movie started with the typical "Long ago something happened and someone died but OH HEY LOOK MAGIC WHOOOOO!!" But near the end it showed the actual emotional impact it had on the grandmother, how losing her husband devastated her. It's a good representation of trauma experienced by older generations. I grew up hearing about my grandparents' experience of living through WW2, but even those stories when passed on through the generations are sanitized summaries of the suffering they went through. For Mirabel to actual SEE the anguish on her grandmother's face, and to see her grandfather's death, bridged that disconnect they both needed to address.

      @ruffboimags 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Yeah I was gonna come say this if I didn't see anyone else had. The difference between the version of the story Abuela told was very "this is how it was meant to be" and she grieved but in a dignified quiet "noble" way, vs the actual memory at the end where you can see how absolutely devastating it was, not only the grief in the moment, clearly screaming and sobbing, but the shock and depression immediately after watching the babies sleep. Not only did it let Mirabel see the effect it had on her Abuela, but it was Abuela letting ANYONE see the effect it had on her instead of holding it inside.

    So Mirabel’s door disappeared during her ceremony. Obviously that means she didn’t get a magic power, but I don’t think most people realize it also means Mirabel doesn’t have a room. The family’s children all live in the nursery until age five, when casita reveals the magical door that shows their gift and leads into their own special room. Mirabel’s Gift Ceremony failed. There was no gift, no door and no room. 10 years later and she is still living in the nursery, in fact she was sharing the nursery with her baby cousin Antonio until he turned 5 and moved into the room he was given. How messed up is that. No wonder this poor girl struggles with feeling like she’s not a part of her family, there is literally no place for her in the house.

    • @Menno0183
      @Menno0183 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      If there’s ever gonna be a second movie I really hope casita has given Mirabel her own bedroom, it doesn’t even have to be so big and super special like Antonio’s or Isabella’s bedroom or anything, a room just for her alone that she doesn’t have to share would be enough and it’s kinda stupid she didn’t even have it in the first place.

    • @Merilirem
      @Merilirem ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Menno0183 I too hope for that. Honestly it kind of feels like her room got saved or stored inside her as a backup for when the house breaks. She has become the new caretaker of the house but that imo should come with a room. Unless she's just supposed to take Grandma's room when she dies lol. Imagine that sequel XD.

    When Mirabel doesn't get a door, the candle flickers towards her- telling abuela that mirabel will be the new candle holder- but abuelas trauma makes her blind to mirabels true gift and role. she subconciously suppresses Mirabel constantly when she tries to do things for the family. I also think that abuela was choosing the gifts, whether she was aware she was or not. makes sense a vulnerable community would need healing, respite from weather and future sight. then the gifts of the grandchildren are a little more political, a shapeshifter and superpowered hearer, a powerful tool for spying and maintaining good graces, a strong person to defend the growing population, and perfect role model for the town who will continue the bloodline and magic. yet antonios gift is straight from him. Mirabel didnt so much predict his animal powers, so much as inherently chose them for him.
    Mirabel acts as the thread that binds the cracks in the family- her gift is being the keeper of the miracle, much like the house, because she is a natural caregiver and supporting her family to be their best brings her joy and purpose. she sews and embroiders- she knew exactly what antonio needed in his moment of self doubt- and her costume is literally full of allusions to this.
    My favourite detail is her handmade pompom earrings. to make a pom pom you have to wrap the thread tightly around itself over and over again- then you cut the thread and release the tension, creating a soft and bouncy pom pom, but one thread still remains in the centre to support everyone. tell me thats not the perfect metaphor for how abuela constricts the family, then mirabel disrupts the pattern to allow the family to create a new form- while mirabel remains in the middle holding everyone together.
    I love encanto, i see more every time i rewatch. Thanks again for a wonderful reaction! you guys are so sweet and have great chemistry, plus you reflect really interestingly on the movies, which i appreciate:)

    The thing I really love about Encanto is the representation of Latinos with so much diversity! I had never seen a dark skinned latino ever in a movie and it feels so good that Encanto really considered that.
    Secondly the female characters are so wonderfully written and portrayed. It’s just so refreshing!

    Btw certain family members such as Mirabel’s dad and Peppa’s Husband don’t get powers because they married into the family, just wanted to let y’all know (even tho they mentioned that in the movie it’s easy to miss)

  • @Vulcanerd
    @Vulcanerd ปีที่แล้ว +163

    I think you guys mentioned this, but I think Mirabel is next in line to take over after abuela. Neither she nor abuela had 'powers' other than their affection for their family and ability to bring them together (albeit grandma's desire to bring the family together kinda went awry by, like you guys were saying, trying to force the various members into boxes).

      Basically, Mirabel's gift is to be Abuela's heir as the keeper of the magic. Abuela started the magic. Mirabel brought it back. Their gift is what enables everyone else. And the reason why Mirabel's door is the front door is because she inherited Casita, which is part of their shared gift.

      I'm happy to see that people recognized that. :) The producer talked about after the movie came out and if you look the first time the candle flickers and fades is after Mirabel's door dissapears showing her brief loss of faith in the miracle.

  • @Vulcanerd

    I think the period abuela was talking about was referred to as La Violencia in Colombian history where there was a ton of violence and civil unrest to the point where so many people were displaced from their homes, an event of such a magnitude that it still affects Colombians today (and I want to say La Violencia occured mainly in the early to mid 1900s?). Incidentally, the majority/all(?) of the cast are Colombian or Colombian American. As for my favorite character, they're all great, but I was partial to Luisa, Mirabel and Bruno. All the songs were bangers, but my favorites were Surface Pressure, Dos Oruguitas and Waiting on a Miracle.

    The animators outdid themselves w this film. The betrothed guy looks a LOT like the grandma’s husband, and Isabel looks a lot like the grandma did when younger. The grandma is so intent on the union bc she wants herself/granddaughter to have the perfect life she(the grandma) didn’t get to have, a redo. Delores, the cousin who has super hearing can be seen multiple times covering her ears during loud events like fireworks. Miribell’s dress as details representing her other family members.There are butterflies everywhere in house details.
    Personally believe Miribell has had magic all along, but instead of a room, the magic went inside her, and she can sew like no one else, and mend relationships and will be the one to take over the candle.

      In my opinion, the whole point of Mirabel and the movie is that you don't need to have powers to be special. Just being you is a gift to those around you, exactly as you are. You're good enough.

    So my understanding is that Abuela never found out what Bruno's vision was, considering the revelation that he "left to protect Mirabel," which would imply that he hid the outcome of the vision from Abuela herself. So I imagine that what went through her mind was, _Okay, so for some reason, the house rejects Mirabel, I ask Bruno to look into it and he for some reason leaves after doing so! Was he afraid of what he saw? Did he abandon us to a fate that he was afraid of? And does this mean that there is something malicious about Mirabel? Could the house sense some darkness in her, and that's why it rejected her? Is that what Bruno saw?_ So of course she was suspicious of Mirabel from that day forward, and felt hurt that her son had abandoned her and the rest of his family to selfishly save himself from whatever this horrible fate was, and didn't even bother to warn them and help them all avoid it. It seemed so selfish of him. And of course, the moment that Luisa said her gifts had faltered after a conversation with Mirabel, where Mirabel "told her she was carrying too much," and then suddenly she couldn't carry as much, you can see why that made her even more suspicious, since she had already been biased against her. I'm always baffled why people don't get Abuela's perspective. Everything goes wrong when Mirabel is present, and even Bruno leaving when he had a vision about her was a bad omen. What other conclusion would you even come to? I'd have been freaking paranoid after that, watching this little girl like, _Are you destined to grow up to be a monster? Why was Bruno so afraid that he just LEFT us?_

    One of the most beautiful yet sad parts of this movie is when Abuela was telling Mirabel the story in the beginning, it was showing what Mirabel was imagining, like her Abuelo “disappearing” and actually disappearing on screen. Then when she’s old enough to understand death, it shows what really happened bc she was given the full information

    The fun thing to notice is that Mirabel and Abuela Alma are the only two who the house takes orders from, so it's almost like that's their power, on top of being the source of the magic that they give to everyone else. Also, her father Augustin and uncle Felix don't have powers because they were non-magical people who married into the family. Only kids born of it get powers.

    I outright laughed at "Get away from her!" when the house started pushing em out 😂 Still though, the house wasnt trying to get them away from Mirabel, Casita was trying to save the family. It realized Julieta and Agustin were not gonna leave without their baby and had to force them out to keep them out the way and out of harm. Casita basically said "I got her! Yall get to safety! Let me get her!" Casita is the realest MVP and honesty i applaud disney for making me a love a house lol

    So the music in this film is written and produced by Lin Manuel Miranda. A lot of fans wanted him to be Bruno but he wanted to take a more backseat approach and guide the film and musical scenes which is why this whole film screams Lin Manuel. A lot of the songs he based off his own family, with the Luisa song "Surface Pressure" is based off his eldest sister. He actually struck a nice deal with Disney after Moana & Encanto is the first in his deal where he was given creative control, so we have more awesomeness coming from him it seems.

    It was great to hear someone call out the gay coding with Isa.
    Abuela makes sure Isa dresses a certain way, even plucking the "wrong" flower that sprouts in Isa's hair when she learns about the guy's desire for five babies. By the end of her song, Isa is wearing a dress that is literally the colors of the rainbow. Her moment of celebration with Mirabel at the end of the movie is because the guy that has been pursuing her isn't doing it any more. Though Disney hasn't confirmed it (several countries banned Lightyear because of a one second scene with a married female couple) the actress who played Isa has confirmed that she played the character as gay.

      No the vision was never about HOW to save the magic. Visions don't show you what you want to happen. They misinterpreted the vision. Bruno even said it's all out of order. The house Needed to be destroyed so that it could be put back together again. She Needed to mend the bond with her sister to be able to become the keeper of the family the keeper of the magic. Like with all of Bruno's visions Everything that happens was meant to happen and none of it really makes sense until it's all over.

      I think it's both. Since the order gets messed up, it clearly shows Isabella last, but that first unclear figure really does look like Alma. Her embrace of Isabella leads her and Alma to the big confrontation where the house/family has to fully break before it can come back together.
