  • In part two of this special interview for Mehdi Unfiltered, Mehdi sat down with London Mayor Sadiq Khan on location to discuss the upcoming local elections on May 2.
    Khan, who’s running for a third term, is up against MAGA-style candidate Susan Hall and has faced criticism for controversial programs like his ULEZ scheme and for soaring housing prices in London.
    Also, what does he really think of Keir Starmer?

      @EmmaVB82 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m totally with you here (BUT, tl;dr, I’ve come to a different conclusion for this election specifically!)… I had a moment of cognitive dissonance when I realised that voting for Sadiq Khan would mean voting for Labour, which I’d vowed not to do under Keir Starmer. I thought about the options, and while the Green mayoral candidate Zoë Garbett is impressive and someone I agree with on a lot of things, sadly with the voting system changes Sadiq talked about here, I don’t think there’s any way she’ll be able to win this year. If she’s not in with a chance, and if you don’t want to vote for Labour, that leaves the very real possibility that the frighteningly incompetent right-wing Tory candidate Susan Hall would be mayor! 😱
      I’ve decided to vote for Sadiq because I have no problem with him personally, or him as mayor, and in *many* cases his strength of character and willingness to fight for Londoners and the city as a whole, as well as very strongly fighting for the rights of minorities, has impressed me (as well as the actual policies he’s put in place for London, because it’s about more than just words!), and I’ve been proud to have him as our mayor!
      I don’t like some of the things he’s said when toeing the party line, but I have to believe that at least some of that is almost compulsory politics in order to still be able to stand as the *Labour* mayoral candidate (this is absolutely a condemnation of Starmer’s authoritarian rule over the party and commitment to eradicating any dissent, especially when it comes from voices to the left of, say, David Lammy!).
      Plus I think you have to look back at just how clear Sadiq’s messaging has been when it comes to opposing Israel’s horrific military actions (calling it a war seems to imply it’s some kind of evenly matched set of forces against each other, when that’s clearly not what’s happening); even when I have to assume he’s been getting it in the neck from Starmer’s office when Sadiq has been taking a clearly non-genocidal view on the matter and showing up the leadership! I think he’s done his absolute best to speak up for Palestine and for Muslims (and the anti-war protestors) while very overtly taking steps in his rhetoric and actions to demonstrate that he’s a truly inclusive mayor for all Londoners; while I might prefer he had been unequivocally against the actions of Israel right from the start (Humza Yousaf did a great job here! Very sad to see him go), I have some respect for how he’s dealt with this.
      Clearly you do you - it’s something I’ve put a lot of thought into because I do think it’s important for Sadiq Khan to win the mayoralty again this week, and maybe something I’ve said will resonate with you. Owen Jones also put out a video saying much the same thing (but more eloquently I’m sure!), so I think it’s worth a watch if you haven’t already seen it 😊 Also, voting for a mayoral candidate doesn’t have any bearing on the general election, and I’m fully intending to vote Green for the GLA while voting for Sadiq as mayor! I was a member of the Green party before joining the Labour party just as Corbyn was coming in, and I think their presence and policies can only be a good thing for the city/country/world when it comes to any kind of government… but I definitely think Sadiq has been a good mayor even in spite of the Labour party 😆

    It does sound like Starmer has put Labour in a difficult space with the public. Mayor Khan seems to know this, but won't personally call him out. The Right of Labour took away what could've been, another political reality under Corbyn's leadership for Britain. If only people working within Labour would've respected their voters and not undermined Corbyn with dirty undemocratic politcal undermining. Sadiq seems very sensible on several issues spoken about in this interview (Racism, war crimes), so why support Starmer's version of Labour. A shame, because he was all to clear when Corbyn had to be sacked. Is it conformity to who is in power to remain Labour's choice for mayor in London?

    Hm “why are all these academics disagreeing with you” I mean I can think of several different reasons… are they racist/anti-poor? Are they marginalized scholars actually worried (reasonably) about gentrification, esp if a future mayor has worse policies, as mehdi suggested?
    Or GASP are they just intelligent people disagreeing? I’m an academic and of course I have colleagues who agree and colleagues who disagree with me. Not all scientifically “established” ideas are correct and it’s up to us to fight for better ideas, so lots of disagreement is normal. Ideally we’ll yield to the best ideas as soon as we see the convincing evidence & arguments, but some scientists, especially “respected leaders” are very slow to listen and change, but they think they deserve to mouth off constantly and influence policy. It’s too bad the mayor wasn’t able to defend his environmental policy team’s work convincingly.
    Anyway I don’t know about these specific circumstances in London’s air quality and that tunnel but I do know that’s it’s very easy to raise doubts against people who (potentially-I don’t know about this mayor) care less about winning an argument than about the wisdom of their policies.
