Does the back plate have a bushing for that crank end? If so and if the bushing is good, it should tighten up that crank end play. If the crank is truly moving around, it will effect valve timing which will affect performance. The only reason I know is I’ve got a lot of experience building up Harley engines using aftermarket timing gear setups and that motor is real fickle with cam gear lash. Just a thought.

Cams are spot on David, no issues there but that pinion drive bearing is toast. It really shouldnt be like that and i wonder if thats what the rattling sounds are coming from when its running at low revs. It wont move much when the backplate is on as it locates in the backplate, but its really not supposed to be like that so i would grab another 608 bearing and pop that in there.
One thing i forgot to mention about the cam followers is that the one on the exhaust side has an oil way cut into it so that as it moves up and down it pumps oil into the rocker cover. If the O rings round the pushrod tubes are dead that could be the source of the oil leakage.
With the exhausts carbon can block off one of the two passages the gasses can take. It usually takes about 15 years of running on castor for this to happen and once clogged they are finished. I might have one here that has suffered this fate. If so i will see if i can section it and show how the issue develops. Normally i just bin them but i might have one. Assuming i can add a photo to a comment i will post it here.

I just opened the engine up again and replaced the pinion gear bearing and the o-rings at the base of the push rod tubes. This engine is extremely easy to work on. Thank you Jon. I will be ordering a new exhaust from you.

Yes, there definitely is something wrong with that center gear, unless there is a support hole on the back plate

I suspect that most of your noise may be that bearing. Those engines normally run extremely smooth so when I heard it run, I knew it had issues. You are in good hands reguardless. Sounds like the manufacturer has your back. New o rings on those pipes and a new muffler, hey! good as new mabe. Anything with lots of hours is bound to be noisy. I have been teaching people the reason commercial lawn mowers have hour meters on them and why. I explain to home owners, the importance of yearly maintenance on lawn equipment and show then the manufacturers reason for having an hour meter. Some larger residentual equipment comes with an hour meter, or people buy the commercial version, but dont understand why there is a meter.

Ooo, I'm with you, I don't like that sloppy rear shaft...Looks like it could easily skip time...

I'm sure Jon will be able to comment re that sloppy rear shaft. I agree it doesn't look right. Stick with it, these really are great engines. The only problem is that spares are not kept for the older versions which (at least in the UK) does make people cautious about buying secondhand older Lasers. Grahame
