If you speak Croatian, you can understand Serbian, Montenegrin, and Bosnian completely, 100%.

If you speak Bosnian, you can understand Croatian, Serbian, and Montenegrin completely, 100%.
If you speak Montenegrin, you can understand Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian completely, 100%.
You will be understood in Macedonia almost completely (that was my experience at least).
You will be understood in Slovenia and Bulgaria probably around 50-70% (that was my experience at least).
You will be understood in Slovakia enough to communicate on a basic level. (that was my experience at least).
If you are from any of the countries I mentioned, please tell me your opinion.
I know Ukrainian and Russian, i'd say you surely understand at least 40% and guess at least 20% more.
I see multiple parallels with Ukrainian
Macedonia here, that’s absolutely true!

i know russian, i can understand serbian way easier than ukrainian and i don't know both of them at all.
I decided to learn Serbian from the fact that it's such an interesting slavic language in the balkans also the fact that if you know Serbian you can communicate with Croats. Bosnians and Montenegrins very easily
Definitely right, you've made a great decision!

If A=B, and B=C, than A=C. Please feel free to substitute Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, etc with either of the letters.
@@Unknown-yg1hk It is a Slavic language that was relatively more influenced by Latin than the others were, so yes, that is interesting.
Also, the rules for ti/vi are the same as tu/vous.

Absolutely awesome format. No annoying grammar, just necessities. Thanks for your work.
I wish to see the same video in Russian-Serbian, both written in Cyrillic. It makes a lot of sense as many words are the same. Mentally translating from English and reading Serbian in Latin letters creates extra hurdles for huge eastern Slavic community. Хвала вам.

I'm always grateful for people to share their language free on youtube, and your presentation is very sweet, but I do so wish they would understand that simply saying a long, long, long list or words with translation is not anything resembling a lesson and is practically useless for learning. What is useful is presenting a few words at a time and then memory drills--saying the word in English and giving time to remember and then saying it before giving the answer. If there is no regular testing of memory, there is no learning, simple as that.
I completely agree, but people just like videos like this.
Videos with exercises, for example, are not popular, they're not watched as much.
Great job

i'm italian and i know russian almost mother tongue and there are plenty of words from other slavic languages i can undestand but usually i can't understand most things that are being said.. i've never listened to serbian specifically but when i did some time ago i was fascinated by how much i can understand without knowing the language at all, it's a bit like italian and spanish (and i've never put any effort into learning spanish) but i'm kinda used to that, it's quite interesting that it's the same thing with russian and serbian.
i can say that for certain serbian words/phrases you need a bit of logic, some serbian words use (kind of) russian words that aren't often used in that context but it all makes sense, other sound almost the same or like a sort of dialect.. and some are completely different.
i can certainly understand serbian way easier than ukrainian.
Yeah, I think that's kind of interesting for Serbian native speakers as well.
There are also other languages like Slovenian, Bulgarian, Czech, Slovakian, and maybe Polish that could be somewhat understood. (not counting Macedonian because it is too similar, almost the same)
Or you could understand how their versions of some words came to be, which is fun.
No Italian understands most things that are being said, in any language :D Kidding haha Armenia says hello to Rome :p
Italian and Serbian are from the same family but they are still very different. However, I have an interesting comparison:
- Kada tvoja noć mi da dva oka koja te vide.
- Quando (la) tua notte mi dà due occhi che
ti vedono

That's amazing. Yeah, I was in Bulgaria many times! We can understand each other to a certain extent, the languages are similar.
Kind of like Macedonian - although maybe Macedonian is even more similar to Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian.
Would you be able to understand Macedonian even better, or not?

I am having a hard time understanding how "da li" is correctly used. Can you explain this?
We start questions with 'Da li' - it seems like you can use it for any question, any tense or just with adjectives:
Are you hungry? = Da li si gladan?
Were you hungry? = Da li si bio gladan?
Do you study? = Are you styding? = Da li učiš?
Did they eat? = Da li su jeli?
Will you come later? = Da li ćeš doći kasnije?
Would you do that? = Da li bi to uradio?
Can you do it or not? = Da li možeš to da uradiš ili ne?
Па бре на српском је најлепши језик. Ми смо поносни Србе! ЖИВЕЛА СРБИЈА! 🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸

I want to learn Serbian because I find the language interesting and I’m sick and tired of just knowing English. I want to learn more languages. But I’m curious how many words in Serbian can you learn in a week and how long will it take for you to be able to handle a conversation in that language?
Depends on how many hours a week you study.
But to give you a short answer - it would take you months.
If you study, let's say 5 hours a week, maybe you could hold a simple conversation in 3-4 months.
Made this account because I'm 50% Slovak and 50% Serbian, so that when we go to Serbia, I will finally understand what the people are talking about
Cool!
As a Slovakian native speaker, you can't understand Serbian at all?
Maybe a little at least?
@@teacherbokoI do understand some Serbian, but alot of the more complex subjects are spanish villages for me(Slovak way of saying confusing). Also the best thing about Serbian is definitely the lack of y & ý, because they're pronounced the same as i and í
We use the same expression - "španska sela"! 🙂
Can you please help me with the difference between Bog, Bože and Božja?
God - Bog (default, nominativ)
God, help me! = Bože, pomozi mi! (vokativ)
god (adjective) - božji, božja, božje (depending on the gender)
God's man - Božji čovek
God's will - Božja volja
God's child - Božje dete

Right, even though Russian and Serbian are somewhat similar, it's kind of hard to pronounce.
I have no idea about Italian though. We have taken some words from them because they had control over the Yugoslavian Adriatic territories in the 20th century (today's Croatia).
