  • Atlantic 252 - spillover or illegal broadcast? Discussion on "The Radio Programme" on Radio 4 in 1989. Interviews with management at Atlantic 252 (who simply said they were exploiting the spillover) and Mercia Sound (who thought it was an illegal broadcast).

This transmitter connected almost flawlessly on September 1, 1989 with the virtual disappearance of the last Offshore sea transmitter Caroline (19 08-1989) 2 weeks earlier. Strikingly enough with some DJs from ... offshore radiostation Laser 558. I still have a photo of myself with my radio on a parkbeach of sept. 7th 1989 where i'm listening for the first time to the Big Atlantic 252 in the South-East of The Netherlands.

he was totally taking the piss out of the presenter haha. atlantic 252 went on to be one of the most loved radio stations that could reach as far as north africa for a reason and did so well into the 2000s. these dorks were only mad because they feared loss of revenue from advertising and licensing

I think the BBC should have been more concerned in the 90s, those that had the brilliant idea of hiring Bannister as Radio 1 controller and losing 15 million listeners in the process! And most of the listeners going to A252! 🤭🤣

BBC Radio 1's loss when Matthew Bannister and Trevor Dann stepped in, was A252's gain as more switched over to this station.
I would've integrated Radio Luxembourg and Atlantic 252 together than get rid of Radio Luxembourg, by putting both on the Astra Satellite bouquet 19.2E sharing a Wegener PANDA 1 encoded stereo channel, on an unscrambled channel using a CLT owned television transponder over any of the four Astra satellites ie n-tv RTL-2 RTL Super RTL Vox Tele5 etc, sharing broadcast hours with Atlantic 252 in stereo during the day then Radio Luxembourg in stereo during the evening via 7.74 / 7.92 MHz.
Putting Radio Luxembourg on a scrambled channel was a faff, you had to connect a Hi-Fi system to the satellite receiver with stereo phono leads, switch to Aux or LINE IN on the Hi-Fi, select the correct vision channel with the remote then the correct stereo audio channel, as the scrambling on RTLV /RTL4 on most receivers wiped out the audio on a stereo TV set, whereas with a clear channel you just had selected the correct stereo audio channel on the remote and listened on the stereo TV speakers, rather like a music box.
I'd also promote the new dual service to UK and European cable systems, satellite rebroadcast era, FM partner stations plus student and hospital radio stations by way of a HiFi Stereo VHS promotional tape and bumf on how to tune it in, what satellite equipment you need, and where it located in terms of satellite vision channel, audio subcarriers, satellite orbital position etc.
When Radio Luxembourg was on I'd sell international advertising in English and European languages in the ad breaks at very good affordable rates, and I'd bring back sponsored programmes ie Sony Onkyo TDK Panasonic Audi Disney VW Porsche JVC etc,
