This song is AMAZING! I've been playing it on a constant loop for about a month now. If this were any other song by any other artist I would be sick of it by now. But I'm not. I'm in love with this song.
owch!! I would REALLY hate to be the person in this song. But i like her inspiration for the song: i think she said it was from a book she read, about lazy minds ("magical thinking") And yeah, the quality is better than other versions i heard.
I think she wrote it about Stephan Jenkins after he cheated on her and she left San Francisco for New York. "Chicago" is supposed to be "San Francisco", but she used "Chicago" in the song to make the melody work The "magical thinking" references are about "The Year of Magical Thinking" by "Joan Didion". I think it's saying like she can't believe what her current boyfriend did to betray her. He's supposed to be flying to San Francisco (Chicago in the song), but is actually in Los Angeles pursuing his ex girlfriend he proposed to in a letter. I think it's like Vanessa is discovering her boyfriend is cheating on her and can't believe it so her brain is trying to "magically think" its way out of the situation because the situation is too heartbreaking to process.
Vanessa is completely one of greatest real musicians on earth! I love the voice of the violin and piano in this song. Does this song come out from her new album? please someone tell me!
Beautiful melody really! I love her and think shes so talented i really wish this album could come out sooner! But its coming out this spring so it's not that far away! Can't wait!!!! :)
Just saw her do this live on Friday and loved the song. Although I thought she was saying "A magical pink earring gets us by." Oh well, can't wait for the album.
@DADADOoOM It was something about a book she read that described the psychology of magical thinking... sort of like since the world for us is as we perceive it, then we can believe what we want and in a sense construct our own reality... I think, I could be off! "You didn't really mean it, and I don't have to believe it."
@lordcrull o thanks, its rlly awsome to hear that! i tried joining one forum, but it took me about a month to get an answer on whether or not i could join. when i did get the email it turned out i was rejected for some reason. thanks for the info tho!
It's funny. When this video was first posted, I was going to be a Freshman in high school, so naturally, the line "It's always easier with freshman" bugged me a bit. Now, the album is finally going to be released when I'm about to be a Junior. It's just interesting to see how a song progresses from point A to point B and how it's meaning changes to someone as well, because I sure as hell lived through that line Freshman year.
beautiful! can u believe that i was actually disappointed at her new album at first? but after listening to this song, i started listening to the rest of her songs nd they were all beautiful!! haha this is real music
@Echochi1 "Rabbits On The Run" will be out on June 21st. This was the first version of the song, she has changed it a lot since then. Look for the most recent version on TH-cam so you won't find it very different when you listen to the album.
Could this song be about Stephan Jenkins? There's a track on Ursa Major (3EB's latest album) called Sharp Knife. and there's that line about vodka dulling sharp knives on this song. And the quip about age fits too.
Hard to understand some of the lyrics but I really like the piano and the use of the female falsetto here--don't know what to call it! ^_^ Can't wait for "Rabbits on the Run"!!
@waterkeeper511 So true about Stephan Jenkins. I love the part about "But your age is showing, and you gotta work harder for it" cause Stephan is getting on abit to be trying to bed college freshman groupies. The more you learn about those two and the reasons they split the more you can appretiate this song and in fact alot of the album.
@Leroy734 She gave a blog on myspace about 2 months ago that she is writing an album slowly but surely. But, that's the only information I know, have you tried the Vanessa Carlton forums?
I Agree it is hard to fine people like Vanessa but i think you might like Kate Havnevik she also has a wonderful voice and maybe OMG Definately if you are like in t he style of the piano and well Kanon Wakeshima her style is a little bit more like classical gothic but i hope you can hear this artist while you are waiting for Vanessa's new album :D
@FredericoTV I can see what you mean, Alicia Keys is known to strip isn't she, Hayley Williams? Adele? Duffy? Katy B? Colbie Cailait? Taylor Swift? I personally don't know a lot of chart music but lets cut the bullshit, the reason Vanessa Carlton isn't famous has nothing to do with whether or not she takes her clothes off or even if she over sexualises her music. She isn't famous because she preferred to make music from her heart than do what her label told her. -
Wow, this version is so beautiful! And it's so interesting to see which lyrics got changed...
shes very talented....i love her music...cant wait her new album
i know, she deserves more fans. shes like the only artist i listen to, its so hard to find quality songs like hers with so much crap on itunes today.

Love this.
vc is so amazing and talented
awesome song
This version is better than the original! And at least I thought that we can understand cleaver the meaning of the lyrics.
@DADADOoOM It was something about a book she read that described the psychology of magical thinking... sort of like since the world for us is as we perceive it, then we can believe what we want and in a sense construct our own reality... Loving the addition of the violin, hopefully this stays

By the way, excellent job on this, this song is now one of my favorites from her.
Haven't listened to this version since Rabbits came out ... And I still can't decide which version is better.
Highly looking forward to the new album, It's been too long! :D

Can't wait for "Rabbits on the Run"!!
Yes I love this verison so much. Was it from the pride show? I would play it so much before she released Rabbits on the Run.
i have to say you listening to the violin it gives the song more character.
I'd like to see this on iTunes.
@waterkeeper511

@Leroy734 She gave a blog on myspace about 2 months ago that she is writing an album slowly but surely. But, that's the only information I know, have you tried the Vanessa Carlton forums?
@21jd haha that made me giggle =)

I Agree
it is hard to fine people like Vanessa

Kate Havnevik

@harveypotato Still this is the first version of the song, not the studio album version(even it if is a old post.) TBH i still prefer this one.
Where did you get this? Please send it to me?!
i can't find the video of this. T.T
@Inupuppieoxox R u sure. I don't want to get excited for nothing.
@FredericoTV I can see what you mean, Alicia Keys is known to strip isn't she, Hayley Williams? Adele? Duffy? Katy B? Colbie Cailait? Taylor Swift? Reminds Heroes&Thieve's style
You should change the lyrics you have posted now that the album has been released with the lyrics insert and you know what you posted is wrong. :)
this song goes out to my ex and his godzilla of a girlfriend.
because sadly if you wanna get famous you gotta take your clothes off on TV :(
