Thanks for this video this is a really interesting topic. I did my masters degree at Durham university and I remember a girl on the course clearly old money , posh accent and someone at university had googled her school on Facebook and it was £20k a year. This was many years ago but what I remember about her was how warm and kind she was to everyone. She also would often wear threadbare clothes like a jumper with a hole on her elbow and wasn’t into fashion or make up. She then got engaged and again the size of the emerald gave away how wealthy her partner was but they came across as discreet loving people. She wasn’t wearing designer bags or head to toe camel clothes etc. it’s nice to make an effort but I think being classy is also manners and etiquette as you said and showing a genuine interest in people.

I couldn't agree more dear... thats exactly what i'm talking about ❤️

The term is “scruffy posh” - it’s what truly wealthy English people often look like. Durham uni is classic for it - the poshest girls have almost an unkempt look! Very little makeup, natural hair, tatty clothes etc. It’s the opposite of “try hard”.

Money doesn't buy class. Class has nothing to do with wealth

Totally agree with you. We live in an era were people focus on appearance and forget the class and manners and i hope i can through my videos bridge this gap to my lovely viewers ❤️

I just subscribed. Demure is the word. I don't mean this as an insult, but I am surprised to see the Hermes throw carefully placed on the sofa.

100% agree. To build on your point on preppy dressing, there has also been some 'starter' old money pieces that people seem obsessed with. These include pieced such as the Birkin/Kelly or riding boots. It seems like everyone is trying to fit an idealised concept on 'old money'. Instead, everyone just looks like carbon copies forgetting they can introduce their own personal style. It also screams 'try hard'.

You are absolutely accurate. My grandparent's had many friends from old money. They were classy and very humble. You could not tell they were wealthy. until they opened their mouths. New money is very flashy and likes to show off wealth, often times people with new money are very stuck up.

The “discreteness” is not because of avoiding taxes. It’s just to not try and show of or try and prove that you are something

  • @genzillennial
    @genzillennial ปีที่แล้ว +8

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but “old money” doesn’t innately indicate superiority. I don’t understand why so many positive traits are assigned people based solely on the social class they were born into.

I agree with you. I guess people are more inclined to look at them and see success over generations or be inspired that wow they are lucky. But at the end they are people with flaws and quirks and some are good and some are bad. Of course no shame to want to be their friends or marry someone from their circles or even just dress like them, but no one should expect them to be angels on earth.

To me this trend among women to look rich, expensive, old money sounds vain and not eppetizing. There are so many influencers who teaches women all these creepy rules or techniques to get attension of an old money Man. Its kid of a game or even manipulation and pretending someone you are not. Believe me women being true to yourself You can impress quality men. Have good manners, be genuine and easy to be with. You dont have to buy all these expensive items. Being modest can be enough and you may stand out among all those rich looking women. When I think about all these ladies who chase those men but they pretend they dont do it is so sad. I feel even the pity for these men , its like chasing money not true love to a person.
Why someone wish to become old money? To me You are born in those families or not its so simple. However if You are not it does not mean You are worse so what is the reason to pretend someone you are not ? Angie Salama thank You i hope U understand what I mean.

Yes! I totally agree. The idea of picking people to date based on their wealth is just absurd. My dad taught me beautiful thing, a man can have little money but would want to give it all to you because he loves you and another can have all money in the world and put a budget for you. Also, a man is what makes money and not the other way around. The goal is to find a partner that shares your ambition to be better whether he is old money, new money, no money.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but what do you mean by your statement that if you show your wealth in Germany by dressing flashy or by wearing an expensive designer bag, they stop you to check everything to get money from you? Who is they? Do you mean the Finanzamt? The police? Do you mean that the Finanzamt have officers walking around the streets or at selected locations and scanning for people who seem rich and then ask them to disclose what they have in their bag? I've been living in Germany and don't think you will pay more taxes just because you "seem more rich", just like you won't pay less taxes just because you "seem poor". You pay taxed based on your earned or unearned income. There are probably many different ways to avoid paying taxes, but I don't think that dressing "more discretely" is one of them.

Hello dear, ok what i meant wasn’t so clear my apologies.
A friend of mine had her own wedding ring taken at the airport (1.5 carats) here at the entrance with customs. They weigh your jewellery and don’t care if you don’t have a proof of purchase. They asked her to pay a lot to get the ring back.
With me the lv luggage bag gets me stopped every time at customs in Frankfurt airport 🙈 they want to check if i bought something expensive from another land to pay tax for when entering.
In general my wealthy friends in Germany dress very low key to not get peoples to take advantage of or date/be friend them for their wealth which is why it’s more of a discreet thing here verses other countries.

The people I’ve met in my life who had money ,you would never know they don’t about it ,they don’t live extravagantly they’re really simple . When a person starts telling you what they ,have they don’t have anything or the person who projects to have wealth and is in debt up to their eyeballs that one always makes me laugh.

It is bullshit. It’s literally just classic fashion. Old money is such a tacky term. The way I grew up half of what I’ve seen was so off. I had shown some of the women in my family some of the trends they laughed. They told me “they had no idea what it is to have grown up well and be taught the vast amount of knowledge we have and the joy of what will be passed down over generations to come. It’s been fully bastardized.” and I don’t disagree with that. They said the trends are tacky and gauche and that is all they ever will be.

Interesting topic! I love learning about the way money works among different cultures. So you mentioned that being connected to rich and influential people can help you get out of taxes at the airport in Egypt. How does a flyer initiate that? Do you have to show documentation or can you just drop names? I'm looking forward to your next videos!

This is an American phenomenon. Nobody in Europe plays into made up stereotypes of "old money". The truth is, there is no such thing as an "old money" style - at least as it's being defined by fashion victims on TH-cam. If you think old families are all conservative and quietly elegant, might I point you to (exhibit A) Lapo Elkann : they don't come much more "blue-blooded" than him, yet he has all the taste and refinement of a Las Vegas nightclub owner. And Lapo's not alone, you see similar displays of "aristocratic tackiness" constantly in London and Monaco. There really is no correlation between being born rich and having remarkable tastes - and that would apply especially to the United States which is still a relatively unsophisticated market despite its enormous wealth - you only have to look at a few videos of mansions in Los Angeles to see how tasteless rich Americans are. So this "old money" trend is really playing to a specific type of American snobbery - it's very contrived and inauthentic.

No labels. No flash. Quality clothes are classic and worn forever. Yes, you will find us in worn out clothing as well as proper dress as occasion dictates. Manners, excelling at small talk, always learning something. Quietly assured.

Money means great skin, hair and figure. Great diction, manners and proper grammar goes a long way too. My friend went to a Chanel shop holding a rented purse and all dolled up after a wedding. She was ignored. I always had great service in my sweats. I am in my 40s and tired and I will shop in sweats and uggs and I do not wear makeup indoors. This is for Korean shops. Not sure about the rest of the world. My good friend aged naturally and I have monthly laser sessions to prevent skin sagging since I was 25. My hair cuts cost 5 times as much as her hair salon. Money spent simply shows, and no purse or dress can cover the lack of it or vice versa.
