    I don't think the Spider Pit scene was ever completed. There were models, sketches, and the one photo of the scene which could have been just for set-ups. However, no one but Cooper ever talked about the scene; not Shoedsack, not O'Brien, none of the actors ever mentioned it. And Cooper would never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

    Ok so
    From what i can tell, there's at least two different spiders in the lost sequence.
    One dubbed "Great Spider" it's the bigger one and it should be the one in the Famous Monsters of Filmland stills, the other one it is dubbed " Giant or Trapdoor Spider" and it's the one with a somewhat crabbish form and with two big eyes.

    I can't make any promises, nor can I jump to any conclusions, like here (no offense).
    However, according to the book "The Making of King Kong" there was a documented test screening witnessed by George and Orville Turner which included the full Triceratops Chase ( just the full chase with the ending where the sailor gets gored) as well as other test scenes, including the Spider Pit sequence, where it was said the creatures swarmed out and devoured the sailors.
    I can neither confirm nor deny the witness testimony. There was also supposedly dunning shots involving actors (sailor extras) which was said to once be in possession of Jim Danforth (again, can't confirm this). Obie also reportedly said he felt it was his best piece of animation, suggesting at least part of it was animated (?) However, Given the new evidence suggesting it was never on the production schedule to be filmed, that's conflicting with the other reports/ seems to retcon them, so I really don't know what to make of all this. Maybe the test reel just had a few pit animation shots, if any were ever made? No clue. I'm guessing that there are at least more stills/ photos of the models to be found, if nothing else.
    Also:
    -Thanks for the shout-out. I'm glad you liked my fan-animation. I went out if my way to personally revise the script and concept art before making that, and noticed a lot of things most people overlooked, like the Miniature crabs and snakes crawling on the ravine floor, and the slimey things wriggling into the chasm wall. The whole project was quite a journey, and I hope others take note of these details for the next time someone re-creates the scene.

    If you have the the triceratops on the other side really explains why they didn’t try to go to the other side of the log without it I really makes no sense it really explains a lot

  • @daoust26

    The spider pit scene would be overkill anyway, the falling to their death was brutal enough.

  • @jackbruno953
    @jackbruno953 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    To justify the log scene. The men were running from the brontosaurus. To have them run into another dinosaur would have been a little extra. It’s fair to assume they didn’t run to the other side in fear of the bronto in the final film.

    • @anthonycrnkovich5241
      @anthonycrnkovich5241 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's how it always played for me as well -- the men are running from the brontosaurus. As far as why they don't turn back on the log, that's simple -- it's because when they try, they stumble over each other and by that time Kong starts rolling the log. It all happens too fast for the men to do anything but cling onto the log for dear life.

  • @RetroView66
    @RetroView66 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yes, it was 100% filmed. You left out the ten minute sfx reel used to sell Kong --- which had the spider pit scene. This was footage shot before the film fully went into production and every shot in the reel is listed in THE MAKING OF KING KONG by Orville Gardner, one of the actual spfx crew members. They didn't set up models and shots with cameras then not shoot the scene.

    well this was during the great depression, so that would have been a valid reason why the spider pit scene was never completed, or just never filmed, never made, due to budget costs, they had to save money during rough times during the great depression

      @drscottgamingfx211 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's my old [non-gaming] channel. I don't think I received a strike, but after I edited my re-creation (which used footage from various re-creations, including the shot of the guy crawling in the mud), I found out that the Danforth re-creation that was public was actually ripped from a private video without the owner's permission. I was FURIOUS when I found this out because I trusted in good faith that the uploader was the original source, but someone was being dishonest about their video upload, and made me look bad. Needless to say, I took down my edit out of respect of the original creator, and made a cut of the scene strictly with my own animations, and clips from the original Kong. It no longer feels as complete, but it still serves it's purpose.

    To be honest, I don't think that the stop motion puppet in this video is the one used in 1933's "King Kong",. Based on the appearance, especially in the thumb nail photo, it is actually the puppet from 1949's " Mighty Joe Young". The Joe model was more solidly built, and had larger, more solid build, and larger, more expressive eyes. In short, the movie animators had improved upon the model's features, and capabilities, and actually used one of the previous King Kong metal armatures for Joe's skeleton. "This day in history". Check it Out! Ciao!!!
