I have been a logger and a sawmill owner for the last 45 years you know once you get sawdust in your blood you will never get it out...love to here the saw sing...nice set up you have
You are right Bob, it does get in your blood. I have been hooked since the first time I sawed oak on my uncles circle mill about 10 years ago. Fast forward to today and I have my own mill. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks Dan. Wished I had more time to spend at the mill. Have been working in the NC mountains a lot since last year building a tree house for us to stay in on weekends. That is a video in itself that I may post .
Yes it sure is. We sawed 1000bf of oak and poplar this weekend and it was going through the poplar like it was nothing. Just a joy to saw when it is running like that.
Love you sawmill sounds like it cuts nice. And cool that you'll pay your boy to clean the sawdust. Personally growing up my Dad woulda told me. You like to eat and sleep in you bed dont you.
Thanks Jacob. Well, he does have to do some things without pay. For instance, he has to help me split wood for heating the house because he is the first in front of the fireplace during the winter. The sawmill, however, is my hobby so I pay him to clean it up after use. He has a list of things at home that are paying opportunities as well and others that have to be done just because he lives with us!
I was originally planning to run the planer off of my main engine but that turned out to be problematic so I decided to get a dedicated engine for the planer. The 471 you see was on a sawmill that I worked on years ago and the gentleman that had it shut it down and disassembled it so since I knew the engine, I bought it to run the planer. Hoping to get started on setting up the planer this year. We bought land in the mountains of NC and I have been working up there most weekends since last summer and haven't had too much sawmill time.
Normally just sawing 4/4 when doing pine. I will go thicker when doing quartersawn oak for furniture tops or something. Quartersawn pine is nice looking with a really straight grain pattern. Of course you don't have the fleck like you do in oak but it still makes a nice product. I use the pine for structures and things around the house like building our chicken coop and other more utility type projects so I haven't intentionally quartersawn any of it.
hi there looking real good . good to see another video of the mill . keep them coming . stay safe john. ps did you ever get that book from Casey Kammer ?
Sure makes me miss my saw,, I almost got my head knocked off by it right in front of my wife, that was the end of me having my mill... I sure have a lot of days I wish I had it again though... You have got that tuned in good the sound of the saw tells the story...

Just wondering are you sawing 5/4 thickness or 1 inch? Also, what would a big pine log be like to quarter saw?

John, yes I did get the book by Casey. Good read, lots of good info in there. I read it a while back and should read it again 3 or 4 times!

board fall over the splitter wheel ?
very good motor
nice video ! are you going to put any hydraulics on the mill?
No plans to put hydraulics on it. I will keep it as a handset mill since it is a hobby only.
Your helper is smart. You need to get yourself some hearing protection.
I am wearing hearing protection, always do. Inserts into the ear that you cant really see on the video.
