For anyone who is wondering about the gender gap statistics discussed on the video, here is the link to the full report: www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_GGGR_2023.pdf
The controversial result that Japan is below Saudi Arabia can be attributed to three factors:
Saudi Arabia's recent significant policy changes favoring women's rights and participation have not made it better for women than Japan, but the progress pace is far faster.
Saudi Arabia is quickly overtaking Japan in women in higher positions, especially in the private sector.
Small changes in scores lead to big shifts in rankings and it's therefore not representative to compare countries with very similar scores.

The low single motherhood rate is a virtue of Japan, but there's the flipside of the “black hole” parental child abduction, recognizing no custody.

After 5 years living in Japan I can safely say that the acknowledgements of shortcomings in Japans general society are just addressed verbally. It's just talk but no walk! There is just an uncanny inability in this Country for positive change. That's why there is systemic stagnation for decades. Japan is sweet but way behind the times in many ways.

How could Japan rank below Saudi Arabia when Saudi women are subjugated to their male guardians (father, brother, son etc)?

As a outsider working for nikkei company in Japan.
This won't work. Superiority and power harassment will always be there.
The people that can cope with them are people that can ignore it and take it as '' well this is normal, don't pay attention about it''
There was once I pointed out there is an error of my superior and say we need to correct this. All I get is more problems.
We avoid confrontation straight away and allow any foreseeable issue explode and deal with it later.
At least, we are just following orders

I hear you, but I don't agree. Japan is definitely changing, and from my years working here power harassment and other forms of harassment are definitely becoming more highlighted. Is it changing as fast as it should? Nope, but at least I see it going in the right direction

As a german woman with japanese husband, we will settle down in Japan soon. One reason for me is that i feel as a woman much more respected in Japan than in Germany.
In Japan i can wear skirts and dresses in private and at office while getting the same respect. Its considered normal cloth. In tv are not half naked women. Maybe they would show women as mothers, but at least they are human and not like sexualized objects.

@@konichivalue Not gonna try, but some say they are, either way, I do not trust the WEF. There simply is no way that Japan ranks below the Saudis overall, I think this ranking is using certain standards wherein Japan is lacking in against it. Sure, representation in politics and business is low, but conversely, some may view this as non-problematic overall, ie, there was a feminist book that suggested the opposite(ie gynecocracy) would create a utopia, that is, the people in power don't have to necessarily be the gender of the people to have gender equality, so I'd look into rights and how women are treated as the real concerns(mind you, some issues people raise like the wage gap, which I dispute as a concern, or other things are going to be other arguments to be had).

Canada has fallen behind with innovation. We have very few Canadian corporations. Our trains are from 1900 and like turtles. But we are advance in human rights, anti-racism, anti-discrimination and gender equality. No society is perfect. But that’s where trades comes in. Export and import. We enjoyed our vacation holidays in Japan.😊

You do realize, adding women to the work place and making them work long hours every day instead of saying “It’s your duty to have children, you are the future of Japan. Find yourself any husband and begin immediately.” is just gonna make your birthing crisis worse, right?
You’re basically just trading the future of Japan for short term gains. Rather than a sustainable set of gains.

Click bait, every industry in Japan has a labour shortage the government has been doing plenty of encouragement to women into the work force, around forty two percent of the management positions are held by women. A lot of Japanese women don't want to follow men into certain positions because they know the toll it takes on men. Just because there arent a lot of women in senior roles or politics doesn't make it a problem, there's plenty of women in politics and senior business roles in Western countries and that hasn't made those countries or companies any better than their Japanese counter parts. Fake news nothing to see here comparing Japan to Saudi Arabia is a joke in every sense.
