Those are attempts to do kihon in kata , they lack overall practical application in self-defense. To say, it isn't bunkai. Just looking one will be realized neko ashi dachi isn't a comfortable stance for this end; the attacks a middle level, and sometimes absurds, are rarely used by aggressor... One has just realized of what he have no idea about it.

The way I think is that Neko Ashi Dachi is suitable if your front leg is injured in a real situation. Also good to practice and gain muscle strength. I agree it's not efficient if you have 100% health condition.

Not designed for karate attacks waste of time to teach this ,application of kata is for self defence should be simple affective and brutal OSS

I can't speak for all schools of Japanese karate, but Shotokan must have some of the worst 'applications' of kata movements in the world. They are, in my opinion, more likely to get you seriously injured than provide a way to defend oneself.

Thank you for your comment. In big events applications are always very simple just to comply with the average level of the participants.

@@JKABelarusSanga Yes I appreciate that it's difficult. I have been studying Shotokan for over 50 years & Bunkai is an area that we need to improve.
It's also true that instructors worry about teaching dangerous applications because of the legal implications. So I hope someone solves this problem before I go to the dojo in the sky. ;-)

@@JKABelarusSanga Sorry! But it is an very bad excuse. The katas only one an possible application, maybe two in some occasion. The rest is to lose the time. The most safe is you had learned nothing in this seminar, except someone: not to return, to do self-criticism and to research the real history of the karate and origin of the kata.

@@BelloBudo007 You know, the strikes on the head and neck are deadly and they are taught at the the beginning and always. Where is worry?
Setting off there, the deadly one is chokeholds (can control) and a very few takedowns (depend high and other circumstances). The hits on the spine can cause permanent damage although one must have control in his/her back and they can redirect.
10 years in karate and I knew this long before.
You're right in improving kata. Solves: cross-training, to research of the history and original application of kata and/or to meet real expert in the matter. Since, nipon associations are politician tools and western federations are very lost.
