Some people claimed that he plunged the country into war, I am certain that it was not his fault, it was the period of Cold War to be blamed. Cambodians were so very new to modern ideologies during that time. We trusted others but not ourself. According to Sisowath Siri Matak’s last letter, Cambodia, under Lon Nol and Sirimatak himself, was so wrong to trust America. If there is no external involvement, people wouldn’t be suffered. As a young generation of Cambodian people, we will rise once again as long as we are united. I pray his majesty soul to Rest In Eternal Peace. Your dedication to the country will never be vanished, and you will be remembered in our heart as the strongest King of Modern Cambodia’s Golden Era. Agree 100%. He was in an extremely difficult situation. It was not a position anybody would want to be involved in. In hindsight, we can easily see that no matter which side he chose; it was unavoidable that Cambodia would be sucked in to things well beyond his control. Even remaining "neutral" was going to lead to difficult times. It is debatable, but I believe there's sufficient evidence that Lon Nol has responsibility for the fate as well - as did the U.S. government. Many factors were involved, but I believe Sihanouk cared about his own fate of course. It's normal. However, he also really did want the best for the country as well. He tried to make everybody happy in order to avoid conflict; but in that particular time and that particular situation, it was an impossible thing to do. His power within the country was also limited. I think he symbolizes the country itself - a hostage to many forces which were beyond his control (forces from outside and inside the country). He truly was the face of a nation.
