I love that the whole entire series is connected despite the people are behind the scenes running it changing, the doctor is still the same. I love that they waited so long for them to meet again, that's really beautiful
I still remember Sarah-Jane Smith's departure from when I was a kid. It was one of my earliest Doctor Who memories. I really liked it when she saw the Tenth Doctor in School Reunion. That was a nice way to round if off & connect eras.
It's odd, given Sarah Jane's attitude to the Doctor in New Who - when the two are reunited - I had imagined that her goodbye would be quite a sad one. Instead, far from being sad, we see Sarah Jane walking off and whistling merrily.
But we didn't see later, when she well and truly realized that she'd never see him again. She met the Doctor when he was still actively working with UNIT (even though he could have left Earth in his rearview mirror long before). That meant she could go home at night and return to UNIT headquarters in the morning and find him. It wasn't until after 'Robot' that she was permanently aboard the TARDIS. (On the show. I don't know the EU.) So she found a phone, called UNIT to arrange transportation home, and at some point it hit her: he was gone. Off the planet. No waking up to alien planets or the birth of stars or even a walk along a beach in the Cambrian. Back to reporting on tiny little human obsessions and concerns.

This scene perfectly encapsulates why Tom is my favourite doctor. The look he gives when Sarah leaves is beautiful and clearly a man who has been hurt by the curse of being from another world and being forced to live forever because it means he can’t travel with his best friend who he so clearly cares about live no other human being. When it comes to Companion departure scenes, this one is the gold standard. Bittersweet and sentimental, but understated. Few such scenes have approached it; none have surpassed it.
Sarah Jane is THE companion, against which all other companions must be measured. Kinda ironic that she's also one of very few who made it out alive and unscathed.
I love Sarah Jane as a companion. She was a feisty, strong willed and feminist young woman. She wasn't afraid to question the Doctor. This was a very emotional scene for The Doctor and Sarah Jane

Martimus Prime Sarah Jane was most definitely a feminist character. You have to remember that the definition of feminism back in the early 70s (often referred to as "second-wave feminism") is far removed from the definition of feminism seen today ("third-wave feminism"). Sladen's character was created at a time where, although first-wave feminism allowed for women the right to vote, did not abolish the social expectations that men often had for women. By being strong, Sarah Jane as a character actively challenged the gender expectations of the time, refusing to be marginalised for purely being a woman. She is literally a textbook feminist of her time lol.
+Adam Stringer So far I have made it thru "Seeds Of Doom"(another awesome episode) in Tom's run as the Doctor. Can't wait to watch the next episode. My roommate is enjoying Tom's Doctor as well. I'm wondering if "The Hand Of Fear" is the first time this auxiliary control room popped up in one of Tom's storys. Doas anyone know?
+Linda Taylor It first popped up in the story previous to this, The Masque of Mandragora. The Doctor tried to redecorate the standard one, so had to use this one for a season, as that's how long it lasted.
+Mechanoid Thank you for letting me know. My roommate and I will be watching that episode next. +The 12th Doctor only Jack Harkness and Sarah Jane are worth missing from those names you mentioned. There has been so, so much better companions than Ponds, Donna, Martha...etc.
I disagree."Hot" has connotations for me that I just don't associate with Sarah Jane. She was an angel, and beautiful. Or, beautiful, and an angel. Now literally. :-( Aged well? That may be the understatement of all time. Still *objectively* beautiful in her 60's, not subjectively "she looks pretty good for her age." I was late to the "Sarah Jane Adventures", and saw them years after their original airing. Watching the last season, released after her death, was almost unbearably sad, knowing what had happened in real life.
"You're not gonna regenerate again are you?" They meet again in _The Five Doctors,_ where she sees previous regenerations and the current (at that time) regeneration.
The whistle of a person who's faced terrible things and yet hasn't sacrificed their innocence in the process of survival. They don't make companions like Sarah Jane anymore. Broke the mold with that one...
Bravo, good man. Well spoken. Personally, I discovered Doctor Who via the Revived Series and have delved as much as financially possibly into the Classic Series and am loving every minute of it.
You can see one Tom's watery eyes in this. One of the few moments pre-Gallifrey destroyed during the Time War in which the Doctor (and probably also Tom in his life) was emotional.
I don't know what prompted me to search this scene again, because I've seen it many times and it ALWAYS gets me in the feels. I think it's even worse than when Jaime and Zoe get their memories wiped.
He was Lord President of Gallifrey at that point, they tried to explain it in School Reunion when Sarah asked about it, “in those days humans weren’t allowed” later on Sarah Jane, the Brigadier and Tegan went to Gallifrey in the Five Doctors.
At some point in the show, and I had thought it was here, she yells out, "this ISN'T south CROYDON' ... but I guess it was at the beginning of the Hand of Fear instead.
Sarah Jane is so adorable in this scene!:D and she is also very pretty for someone who lived back in the day:) What am I saying all women back in the day looked fabulous!
I bet she loved being back on set in school reunion! ( s02e03 ) and tom baker in the day of the doctor! ( 50th anniversary ) it makes me so happy to see them back!
Commandr Moose I believe what was meant was a comparison of how nice it was to see Tom Baker back on the Doctor Who set for the 50th anniversary show, just like it was nice to see Ms. Sladen back on the set for 'School Reunion.'
At least Sarah Jane gets to say goodbye and return to her normal life, with the memories of all of her adventures with the Doctor. Compare her fate to the fates of the companions in New Who, some of whom have some pretty ghastly exits.
For as corny and silly as classic who was at times this is a very emotional moment. Tom Baker was such a good actor and portrayed the Doctor magnificently and you can hear the shakiness in his voice, trying to hide his sadness. You can tell that scene wasn't just sad for the Doctor and Sarah but it was sad for Tom and Elizabeth too.

I really like this control room. It think it's rather fitting to Baker's Doctor.
It's one of my favorite control rooms as well.
Is it an auxiliary control room? I've never seen it before.
I have to wait till next Thursday because are local Barnes & Noble was sold out of that along with some of Tom's other episodes. Luckily they re-ordered it for me. Cannot wait to watch it. Also if anybody is looking to buy any of Tom Baker's episodes on DVD all British T.V. shows are 50% off, thru December 14th, at Barnes & Noble. It's a special holiday sale. I will definitely grabbing some of Tom's episodes on DVD. Thanks again. God bless.
In a last act of kindness, The Doctor made sure not to drop her in Croydon.
RIP you beautiful actress
Quite simply one of the best written and most well acted scenes in TV history
Tom and Liz wrote this scene together. The Directors and Producers should of allowed these two gifted actors to write more of there scenes together.
Totally agree.. this is off the scale. The acting.. my God. I must have see this when it went out in 76...I'd have been 4 years old...That they wrote this as well... such an understanding of their respective characters. Incredible.
The Twelth Doctor and his box have just entered the conversation...
3:47 i found it cute with her owl teddy
She whistles "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me a Bow Wow."
It was actually Lennie Mayne, the director, who did the whistling. Liz couldn't whistle. She mentions this on commentary on the DVD. :)
I miss the ponds and Rose but also Donna, Captain Jack, Martha, Sarah Jane Smith!!!
R.I.P Elisabeth Sladen/Sarah Jane Smith we all miss you! You will always be known as the doctor's companion!
+The 12th Doctor only Jack Harkness and Sarah Jane are worth missing from those names you mentioned. There has been so, so much better companions than Ponds, Donna, Martha...etc.
@@Ternadil 👎👎👎
Sarah was my first companion along with Tom Baker being my first Doctor. I had such a schoolboy crush on Sarah and was sad to see her leave the show.
I always find young Elizabeth Sladen so adorable with the Andy Pandy outfit 🥹
I still regret leaving her. I can't speak for my future selves though..
I remember that she’s one of 4 companions in RTD era of Dr who as a kid and her spin off is totally amazing
School Reunion...Until We Meet Again, Sarah
Nope, they met again in the Five Doctors special actually, one regeneration later.
Sladen looked quite pretty in her youth. Rest in peace, Sarah Jane Smith.
quite? BITCH PLS ELISABETH SLADEN WAS MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN ALL THE NEW WHO GIRLS PUT TOGETHER IN HER 60S
Man, Sarah Jane Smith was hot.
In mid 70s yeah!
Yeah, and she aged damn well.
RIP :(
Got that right, and she also aged very gracefully. May Elizabeth rest in piece.
Absolutely was!
I disagree."Hot" has connotations for me that I just don't associate with Sarah Jane. She was an angel, and beautiful. Or, beautiful, and an angel. Now literally. :-(
Aged well? That may be the understatement of all time. Still *objectively* beautiful in her 60's, not subjectively "she looks pretty good for her age."
I was late to the "Sarah Jane Adventures", and saw them years after their original airing. Watching the last season, released after her death, was almost unbearably sad, knowing what had happened in real life.
This is my favorite scene from The Hand of Fear
'Oh, you didn't need me, you were getting on with your life.'
'You _were_ my life.'
The way she says "Hey, you're not going to regenerate again are you?" is just SO ADORABLE!!! She is my favourite companion by far!
"You're not gonna regenerate again are you?"
They meet again in _The Five Doctors,_ where she sees previous regenerations and the current (at that time) regeneration.
The whistle of a person who's faced terrible things and yet hasn't sacrificed their innocence in the process of survival.
They don't make companions like Sarah Jane anymore. Broke the mold with that one...
The way she cleared her throat was so cute
Tom often never looked at the others - so the amount of eye contact here was very revealing
Bravo, good man. Well spoken. Personally, I discovered Doctor Who via the Revived Series and have delved as much as financially possibly into the Classic Series and am loving every minute of it.
Elizabeth Sladen looks so beautiful in these scenes.
Four and Sarah had probably the best episodes together from his run
You can see one Tom's watery eyes in this. One of the few moments pre-Gallifrey destroyed during the Time War in which the Doctor (and probably also Tom in his life) was emotional.
We’ll never forget her
So heartrending. I am glad I know they did meet again.
I don't know what prompted me to search this scene again, because I've seen it many times and it ALWAYS gets me in the feels. I think it's even worse than when Jaime and Zoe get their memories wiped.
She was so lovable, from the ‘70s even up to her return in Tennant’s era. She was a legend.
Sure he was roughly 29 years late, but he kept his promise!
One thing I’ve never really understood is why he couldn’t take Sarah to Gallifrey, but he then takes Leela and then leaves here there.
He was Lord President of Gallifrey at that point, they tried to explain it in School Reunion when Sarah asked about it, “in those days humans weren’t allowed” later on Sarah Jane, the Brigadier and Tegan went to Gallifrey in the Five Doctors.
Wonderfully acted
Elisabeth Clara Heath Sladen (1 February 1946 - 19 April 2011), frequently and fondly called "Lis", was a widely beloved 😢♥
Our wonderful Sarah-Jane.
Sarah jane :don't forget me.
4th doctor :oh Sarah, don't forget me.
10th doctor :don't forget me.
Sarah :no one's ever going to forget you.
👌.
At some point in the show, and I had thought it was here, she yells out, "this ISN'T south CROYDON' ... but I guess it was at the beginning of the Hand of Fear instead.
The doctor suffers a bizarre case of coordinates-pixel-gallifrey-call-leaving-idus
It was Elisabeth Sladen's decision to leave as she felt the character had run it's course
Loving the interior
Brilliant performances by both...subtle and heartfelt
Sarah Jane is so adorable in this scene!:D and she is also very pretty for someone who lived back in the day:) What am I saying all women back in the day looked fabulous!
"Until we meet again, Sarah..."
*I think I feel my heart breaking*
I want Sarah Jane's owl. It's adorable
He regenerated six times more before see saw her again. Rip Elizabeth sladen
I bet she loved being back on set in school reunion! ( s02e03 ) and tom baker in the day of the doctor! ( 50th anniversary ) it makes me so happy to see them back!
Elizabeth Holmes She died before the 50th Anniversary could be filmed.
Commandr Moose I believe what was meant was a comparison of how nice it was to see Tom Baker back on the Doctor Who set for the 50th anniversary show, just like it was nice to see Ms. Sladen back on the set for 'School Reunion.'
I'll bet she wasn't so cheerful upon realising he'd left her in Aberdeen. South Croydon is nine hours away from Aberdeen by car.
"Don't you forget me."
2:00 _"That's my home"_ . That got me choked-up.
That dog just vibing though
At least Sarah Jane gets to say goodbye and return to her normal life, with the memories of all of her adventures with the Doctor. Compare her fate to the fates of the companions in New Who, some of whom have some pretty ghastly exits.
What's crazy is 9, 10 and 13's companions are all alive and well, 11 and 12's aren't. :(
Still the greatest goodbye in the history of Doctor Who.
This reminds me of the friends on Xbox back in the day.
"We'll play tomorrow right"
"For sure"
*last online 8 years ago*
2:35 He actually does say "bye". I guess she just didn't hear him.
Beautiful memories ❤ every schoolboy's crush ❣ RIP 💔
"He blew it," she says to a random dog.
She is beautiful. RIP Elizabeth Sladen.
When I saw this episode and she got mad at the Doctor and said "I'm going to pack my things and go home" I said "No Sara Jane, don't leave."
