    Also, it might not be obvious to everyone, but make sure you are off the brakes going over the jump. Applying any brakes on a jump will shift your weight forward and send you OTB.

  • @vwbradyboy
    @vwbradyboy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Great advice on bike setup, Blake!
    I think another common cause is when someone doesn't fully commit to a jump and changes their mind on the lip, suddenly attempting to soak it up or scrub it. They end up lifting their front wheel over the lip or trying to soak up their bike with their legs. Their rear wheel cannot do the same and their legs will not have enough travel for the jump. Essentially their front tire scrubs and their rear tire jumps, sending them OTB.

      Jim Robertson hehe same here. Just turned 50 myself and broke my arm last year going OTB on a relic hardtail with a bad fork. Wife was not pleased but it inspired me to learn. I ended up getting a new hardtail and my latest OTB only resulted in a sprain so I’m choosing to be optimistic lol. I can launch pretty good and with advice like this I have a good vector, but I still need work on sticking the landing before I run out of cartilage!😅

  • @eliotcrowe7884
    @eliotcrowe7884 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have the opposite problem - I'm so scared of going OTB that my jumps are lame! One piece that I find confusing: I've heard many times that good bunnyhop technique gives you the foundation for jumping, but I'm not sure which specific bits of bunnyhopping! For example, in this vid Blake gave the tip that you shouldn't drop back over the rear wheel, which is a key part of bunnyhop technique. I probably need to just practice more, and get the feel for it.

  • @ianfurqueron5850
    @ianfurqueron5850 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Over the past couple of months, I've been trying to get my jumping mojo back (not easy in your late 40's) and honestly, the "well, duh..." moment for me was just remembering to pull up on the take off. Yeah, it's so simple, but I swear in most of the "Fails" videos I see, that is the number one thing riders do wrong - they come into a jump fast, have a bit of a panic and then forget to pull up. Then they become a passenger and an OTB becomes more likely.

    That’s me on the second crash, thank you Blake for all your pro tipps, basically I was going way to fast as it was the first time hitting a big boy like that and simply caused to jump in the flat... I usually ride a more stiffy suspension but forgot to put it back to hard, so the bike set up does all the difference, thanks once again !
    @d0wnhill

  • @vwbradyboy
    @vwbradyboy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A lot of you tubers who try to teach jumping say "bunny hop the lip", or "pre-load your suspension by pushing into the takeoff". Though correct, this is bad advice for someone who is trying to learn to jump, aka your viewers. Good advice: Go to a properly made jump and practice riding over it with your weight balanced over both wheels, don't concern yourself with air time, the jump should do the work for you and eventually you'll be clearing it without any bunny hopping. Then, practice controlling that balance in the air to maneuver the bike. If you've never jumped before, THIS is where you start. You don't start by learning to bunny hop, that's for more experienced jumpers who strictly want to add height to their jump.

    If you are not feeling well, take it easy and save hitting jumps for another day.
    I ignored my inner voice, went to the park and had my mind elsewhere when I approached some gap jumps first run. Came in too slow and front wheel cased the second lip sending me OTB.
    Owch.
    2 more falls that day and it was oh great, time to lick my wounds and go home. Destroyed 2 spokes on the last fall as the bike cartwheeled and back wheel slammed on top of a cut tree trunk.
    So, mind needs to be in the game and commit to the jump too. ))

    2:30 So This is how I broke my leg last summer. It's nice that GMBN have done videos on how I broke my leg twice in 51 weeks and we've never met. On a related side note, the hospital gave me a walking stick this week. I'm not even as old as Neil yet. And I haven't crashed as much. They said I might be back on the bike In 3-4 weeks but I'm gonna need the stick when I'm not. At least to begin with.
    3:17 When this happens crank the rear brake and don't let go. The wheels spinning is what helps keep the bike in the air. If you prevent the rear from spinning the back will start to drop. The longer it's not spinning the faster and more severe the drop becomes. Mastering this technique could save your ass.

Just my right elbow got 'dented' and needs some rest. 😅 Wish I could've seen myself how I bucked off the bike😂

I seem to get bucked whenever I pump the limp too hard so I either don't pump it enough and don't clear it or come in too fast to try and use speed to clear it which makes me more of a passenger rather than a driver. This is a real problem for me on larger jumps so I just end up braking early and rolling over them.

    Blake when are you gonna do one on those shorter steeper jumps where you can’t just clear them with speed, you need the guts to go high? What’s the mind game when you’re coming into it and it basically looks like a 3 foot wall in front of you?

    Can you make a similar video for those of us who ride hard tails? Since we can't reduce the rebound of our rear suspension there must be other techniques to compensate.

      sure. just don't have your body weight shift too far forward, no matter what.

    Another one is, unless you've scoped it out, don't try to catch air where you're supposed to roll/pump.

    When I first jumped a big Dirt Jump with my DH Bike with a pretty steep lip I thought I don't need to pull on my bars because this thing sends you to the moon so just roll over it, but I went so nose heavy in the air and landed front wheel first but I managed to ride it out haha. So I recommend go with the lip and pull a little bit on the take off

    Maybe tips for those big vertical 'lippy' jumps? These seem like the toughest to nail properly. Just go to the DJ park with your mountain bike or what? :D

    Awesome content and awesome Blake! Not too many jump videos that people are talking about how to drive the bike in the air. If it just went straight and i landed its ok, but can I straighten it when it’s completely off

      I crashed in late April. My friends say I didn't black out but I can't remember anything until the part I'm riding down the mountain. I vaguely remember thinking "I'm going over the bars" and that's it.

      Nick Baldi yeah i was out for maybe 5-10 seconds. Felt like a damn eternity. And can’t remember anything 10 minutes before. And only vaguely remember the things that happened in the ambulance. Weird stuff, but nothing came out of it so I’m lucky I guess. Hope you’re feeling good.

    How about how to ride steep lip jumps or jumps with a tight radius that throw your weight off. Maybe show some slow mo from the side of different shaped and length lips.

  • @movieman6588
    @movieman6588 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think beginners have to slow the rebound down like he said until they get the idea of how to jump properly that was the mistake I made when I was learning. Once the proper technique is roughly in place then they can slow dial it back up.
