How to: develop film in a very hot environment - stand development with Rodinal!

  • In Ghana I was really concerned about developing my black and white film. I was used to measure the temperature precisely to 20 degrees to know exactly how long I need to develop my film and how dare you develop it any longer! Well, in Ghana to achieve 20 degrees it would be funny or close to impossible to try.
So, Nii Obodai, founder of Nuku Studio, suggested me to do the stand development with Rodinal. And it worked!
Here's what you need to do:
For 1l mix 10 ml of Rodinal (and a little bit more) with 990 ml of water.
Fill into your tank, shake it 3 times, let it stand for 30 min. before you shake it again for 3 times. Wait another 30 min. After, the second 30 min. shake it again for 3 times and then pour it out.
Rinse with water before you pour your fixer (100ml fixer with 900ml water). The fixer is reusable. Personally, I use it for more than 12 rolls of film. I would just increase the time. The fixer I usually shake it every minute for 3 times.
When it's all done rinse it with water 3 times while shaking it first for 5 times, then 10 times and finally 20 times.
    And voila! You're done.
With this stand development you can mix the kind of films you're developing and if you forget to take out the developer after an hour, don't panic! Your film will be alright because eventually the developer will use its developing power if you know what I mean.
If you have any questions feel free to ask me :)!

Good informative video, just a few suggestions that I think might help your views,
    - You could probably shorten this short enough to be a short, so much better for views but lower subscription rate (although higher for specific audience videos like this)
    - try to sound really energetic and interested in what you're doing
    - music would help fill the silence

I'm in Thailand and I use a similar technique. I don't worry about temperature. Just one question.... Is a single wash enough before fixing? I wash 5 times and then 5 mins in running tap water but then water is overly plentiful here. Is your wash protocol due to being in Ghana or do you do that everywhere?

Hi! Thank you for your question! I always do just a single wash before fixing. Of course water was sometimes limited where I've been in Ghana, so a single wash was more convenient but even in Germany I only wash it once. It still allows me to reuse my fixer multiple times (at least 15x) and over a period of at least 3 months (my fixer´s dilution: 1:9). I admit most times I'm lazy, so I just leave the fixer for 15 min. and shake the tank just in the beginning and in the end.... Later after the developer and fixer, I rinse it about 5 times: shaking it once and then 5x, 10x, 20x and in the end I rinse it with distilled water. Hope that helps :).

@@ameliekoerbs Thanks! Looks like I have been overdoing the washing after development.
