  • This video discusses the spiritual aspects of Bemba culture. Bemba names are used to demonstrate the spiritual depth of Bemba cultural artefacts.
    Often, people associate African traditional cultures with moral depravity. This video likens the rite of Bemba naming (burying of the umbilicus and bringing back a name of an ancestor) to Jewish naming rite for a male child (circumcision and naming) and Christian naming rite (baptism of water and bringing back a name of a saint).

      Answer is no. We had the perfect belief system and lacked nothing when religion came they forced it on our ancestors and killed those who refused to obey. They have used their religion to rob us of what is rightfully ours, land and resources

    Ft. Richard Mukuka. I want to know what the bemba spiritual meaning of Richard means.? I discarded the European names I had as it was contaminating my roots.

    • @umubemba
      @umubemba  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My ishina lya mutoto is: Mukuka. In the Bemba naming system, this is the only permanent and most important name. When I was baptised in the Catholic Church, they gave me the name: Luciano, the name of an Italian saint. The Catholic faith of the time required this. When I was registered as a Zambian, I was registered as: Richard. At that time, it was a subtle requirement for one to have an 'English' name. Even though AbaBemba have no surnames, government of Zambia stationery often expected one to have a first name and surname. Within that confusion, I'd use my first name (Mukuka) as my surname and one of my other names (usually Richard) as my first name. To answer your question, my primary identity is: Mukuka. Now, just as we used adjectives to describe the particular Mukuka we were talking about (Mukuka mwaume, Mukuka mwaice, Mukuka waina, Mukuka wakashika, etc), when need arises to identify the Mukuka we are talking about, I do use the descriptives: Richard (in the context of Zambian identity), Kalebalika (in the case of cultural identity), or in extremely rare instances, Luciano (for Catholic church identity). Beyond that, the auxiliary name Richard has no meaning.

    I would like to know about the Gods of the bemba people specifically the abena mfula and abena nsoka.. if there is a book I get to know more about this please let me know

    • @umubemba
      @umubemba  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AbaBemba did not have many Gods. The had Lesa (God), then Imilungu or Ingulu (nature spirits), then Imipashi (spirits of ancestors who lived a good life), then Ifiwa or Ifibanda (spirits of ancestors who lived a sinful life). The book "AbaBemba no BuBemba: Understanding the Bemba cultural world" has a chapter on the the spiritual system

    • @umubemba
      @umubemba  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lukwesa is, strictly, not an IciBemba name. It should be a Tabwa or from one of the ethnic groups along the Lwapula Valley. As for the clans, we hope to discuss these in future videos. Thank you
