Bought this car two weeks ago. I have 2 BMW's, and I am enjoying this car a little more. Due to warm weather, I am getting 54 miles on the battery. Have not used any gas yet, as most driving is done by wife in town. Honda got this car right. We traded in the wife's Prius Touring (her fourth Prius) but this car got our attention. If gas keeps going up, may even consider swapping one of the BMW's for another Clarity. I have an in home charger on 240 v, and going from 0 to full charge is 2 hours 18 minutes.
Regarding price, don't forget that the Clarity qualifies for the full $7,500 tax credit for plug-in vehicles. That doesn't mean the real price is $7,500 less; if you only pay $5,000 in taxes, you don't get a $2,500 check from the Feds for the balance. But if you do pay more than $7,500 to Uncle Sam, the Clarity tax credit will be a big boost to your bottom line. Talk to a tax accountant to see how this would affect your situation.
Chad, those are E-Brake Regenerative Paddle shifters, as you cost to a stop tap the Plus paddle for more regenerative braking or the left paddle for less regenerative braking 😇
Well you'd think + is for more regen and - is for less, but in some meeting at Honda they decided to make it the other way around. Who knows why. The left paddle adds regen, right subtracts.
jdonalds2001 The way it was explained to me is that hitting the - is supposed to somewhat approximate downshifting when coasting. It doesn’t feel right to me when I think of it in that sense, but when I think strictly in regen, it works. The chevrons it adds for the regen indicator are down facing, so maybe it’s that?
Just an FYI about the manual not giving charge times. I just bought a 2019 and the "manual" they gave is actually the Owners Guide, for the 2019 it's got 163 pages of content and doesn't indicate charge times. However, you can download the full manual which has 588 pages and on p. 458 it has a table showing charge times. For the manual and other docs - owners.honda.com/vehicles/information/2019/Clarity-Plug-In-Hybrid/manuals For the 2018 here's the link - owners.honda.com/vehicles/information/2018/Clarity-Plug-In-Hybrid/manuals
Pretty nice review, as a happy owner of a PHEV, this one to date that I'm aware has the right balance of EV vs. gas for those looking to maximize both. Most are about half or less of all EV for the Plug Ins so I'm considering adding this vehicle. I can't go all EV yet until charging outside of home is easier. BTW, the paddle shifters serve the purpose of braking without using the brake to charge the battery on declines. That's what I've been told why mine has it (and of course to floor it when needed).
Honda lists the charging times as 2.5 hours on level 2 (most public chargers) and on a regular outlet as 12hours. As for where ever said it was 30 min they might’ve been talking about the now discontinued clarity Electric, which only has about 90 miles of range.
When charging public make sure you do not have a set timer through the Honda app, if so it will prevent you from actually charging it out and about. I learned that the hardway :)
Hi! I’ve got a Clarity for my daily driver. I don’t know if my experience with the numbers will match everyone else’s. Climate also plays a role in my numbers. I live in the south east. Got my Clarity in the summer. When it is 70-90°F out, I manage around 55 miles on a charge (with AC) and can get in the neighborhood of 475 miles combined range (mixed city and highway). The temperature dropped over the past week or two here: In 35-55°F I manage a comparatively small 42 miles on a charge (heated seats, minimal cabin heater) but paradoxically get ~500 miles on a full tank and charge (mixed city and highway). I think this may have to do with the denser, more oxygen-rich air in cooler weather. ~~~ As far as battery charging times, it takes about 14-15 hours on a standard household outlet in the hot and about 12-14 in the cool and about 14 in the cold. Charging times vary based on amperage with the 240v chargers. I have regular access to a 6 kW charger and it takes ~2.5 hours to charge. I have never fully charged on a 30 kW charger, but have gotten about 50% in 45 minutes. Not quite as good as what you heard online, but pretty alright I guess. ~~~ For hybrid driving, my recommendation is to have between 25% and 65% battery. It doesn’t run the engine as hard trying to drive the car and charge the battery simultaneously and you stay in the range that Lithium Ion batteries are most comfortable. This will make the battery pack last longer and help you drive at higher efficiency. (It’s also quieter so there’s that 😸) ~~~ Of course them’s just my 2¢ and your mileage may vary.
As far as the pollution facts go, yes - you are right. In a lot of states, the energy is pretty dirty. Still usually more miles per kg of carbon added to the atmosphere in EVs than ICE cars, but it varies. Luckily, where I live, there is a lot of hydro and solar supplementing the coal and nuclear and we have fairly clean energy as a result. Now I just need my apartment to let me tack a solar array to the roof. Then I’ll be 🎶drivin’ on sunshine! Woaaah🎶

Hi: Is the clarity a good car? From a price view point, it is a honda; and the $7500 + $1500 tax credit makes the price really attractive for a Honda. I am looking at the prius prime vs the clarity. thx.
@@pokerchannel6991 thanks for the spam and calling me a "fuck tard" and "disgusting idiot" then asking my opinion on the car. That really encourages healthy discussion. I'm 1000% woke now that you berated me on this internet comment section! I hope you could hear my tone there. If you couldn't, it was sarcasm. Though in answer to your question, it is a great car for me. I spend less on fuel (combined electric and gas) than in my old vehicle. The interior is also pretty nice for the price point and feels like it will last longer than the interiors of Hyundai and Kia vehicles my family has had in the past. The performance is there in all modes but eco, but I still find I have little trouble overtaking another vehicle in eco mode. The infotainment is pretty great but I'd wait a generation to see if it improves. In regards to the Prius Prime vs Clarity thing, I find the rear seats in the Clarity are nicer than the Prius and the front seats to be on-par. The Prius Prime infotainment system looks flashy but lack some features that techies would require (Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, etc.) and features a somewhat dated-looking design. The electric-only range also isn't as much as the Clarity, nor does it perform as well at highway speeds. 10/10 would buy again Maybe re-evaluate how you internet ~Matt
This car is not about saving the planet. It’s a great car. Electric motors are fantastic off the line and so quiet. Do yourself a favor and get one. Mine cost $30000 -$9500in rebates and tax credits. Final price $21,000. Best car for that price
Well it is a way to jump start the conversion away from Internal Combustion Engines. China and Europe are pushing electric cars. Gas cars are on the way out. It will take some years but as of today the public hasn't made the switch yet so it needs a kick in the pants. Not my fault though. I just see the reasoning.
BTW, for real-world pricing, I have seen the Clarity Plug-In Touring model selling in the Portland, OR area for $34,500 to $35,000, not taking into account the tax credit.
@@chadhaire1711 lol it’s 294 at the very minimum of 42mpg which it gets still above that. Also EV is around 50 miles when you save that for under 55mph and drive properly. In super below freezing if you use the battery to heat you still get up to 40 miles b You’re getting well over a minimum of 330 to 350 miles on a single fill up with gas and electric. If you drive under 50 miles a day you don’t even touch gas. If you drive over 300 miles a day maybe the car isn’t for that. No need to keep trying to downplay actual data that’s out there.
@@randomvideotosee I drive these for a living--you will never see more than 42 mpg off this and anyone who claims more is either lying or driving down the 75 mph freeway at 50 mph blocking traffic.....and needs to be taken off the road. In this state the Highway patrol can--and should--pull you over for hyper-miling and stalling traffic. Spending all this money and tech to save a few gallons of gas is idiotic.....a small Toyota Yaris I drove got 33/40 mpg with 37 average and at $18,000--a far better solution to this electric nonsense. There is a market for electric cars--on the low end a small city commuter, and at the top end 900 hp performance cars that can run with a gas guzzler Hellcat. But this move to replace every day cars with electric will be an issue--the public does NOT want these. They dont sell----they are a gimmick
We have solar panels on our house so that would help with the clean energy production for us at least. Thanks for your review. This was our first time hearing you and both my husband and I enjoyed your style and information. Very helpful. Now... have you reviewed the Tesla 3?
chad haire They only compare when it comes to low cost fuel expense in my humble opinion. When I think about upgrading my rabbit to new age fuel savings vehicles, your vehicle is in the ball park of what I'm looking for.
Your facts about pollution relative to power generation facilities and vehicles are indeed facts. One thing that is commonly overlooked when people are saying these things is that if you take an electric motor and put it in a car you will get double, triple, or in some cases nearly quadruple the miles per gallon energy equivalent, depending on the rest of the configurations of the car like mass and how you drive it and such, as compared to an ICE vehicle. Yes, the emissions come from a power plant but when taken as a whole system you're getting a minimal double the miles per gallon as with using a standard internal combustion engine vehicle, relative to the amount of pollution generated. This fact should be celebrated and cause for good will towards ushering in the electric vehicle era, not another reason to poo poo on electric vehicles. Relative to the emissions coming from a power plant that is not necessarily a bad thing as the overall grid is becoming more renewable over time. My vehicle gets 114 mpge. Said in a different way, the battery in my 100% the electric Nissan Leaf has less energy in it than is contained within one gallon of gasoline, which it seems like a small amount of energy, and it is, a testament to the efficiency of the electric motor versus they mostly wasted energy of internal combustion engines. I can drive my car, real world, about 100 miles (and when I combine that with the energy coming from the solar panels on my home it cost me a grand total of $0.06 to operate my vehicle last month). Compare that to all of the associated maintenance costs and running cost of an internal combustion engine vehicle of similar mass and power specs and you're looking at something that gets between 20 and 30 miles per gallon or so. Plus, the ride is exceptionally smooth and quite, with all of that low end torque and acceleration, which is great for in-town commutes. It's a dream to drive. Sort of makes me feel like I'm driving a Rolls Royce or something.
Electric cars will NEVER be practical, especially as far as "pollution free" until the country goes to NUCLEAR POWER..but the greenies won't allow it so the future of electric cars will take decades to turn out well....and that is just the way it is.
Aaron Bounds; you are correct in your view. There is a saying, ‘perfect is the enemy of good’. Electric cars cause less pollution overall than internal combustion only cars. Yes, power plants pollute but that can be reduced at the source by increasing renewables (solar/wind) in the power mix. Also gas power plants pollute less than coal plants so ending coal will reduce pollution.
Even in rural Minnesota we have the option to use renewable (wind, solar etc as provided by the utility company) energy to power our homes. I do so, there for there's no coal etc being used. We also have options to charge these vehicles overnight at substantially reduced rates ...4 cents per kwh. Been driving a Nissan Leaf for 5 years (97,000 miles) and it's pretty practical for my needs.
Chad, for the first time I saw your Bald Noggin in a reflection on the front of the car...LOLBut still do like your reviews, this is another good one....
I noticed the difference tags but then again I've never been on the lookout for the hair challenged . I don't understand why this channel hasn't taken off. Real world reviews thanks
Thanks Chad, another great irreverent review - love you calling out the suburban guy. EIA.gov will tell you what your states grid is powered by - what source and what %. Then you can see how a green an electric car is by state. Over time eth shift has been to more and more renewables "greening" the car further over time. To me, the big deal about an electric is starting with a full tank every morning not its relative "greenery".
As always great video , the Honda looks great except for the rear tire area .... would like to see a video on the Mitsubishi Outlander plug in which I think would be better then this Honda .

DC Fast Charging is the fastest type of charging currently available, comes standard with the Clarity Electric and is available at many public charging stations throughout California and Oregon. Level 2 charging requires a 240V charger, and is available at charging stations throughout California and Oregon, or you can install a Level 2 charging station at your home." automobiles.honda.com/clarity-electric#how-does-charging-work FAQS / CHARGING / How does charging work and what type of charging are available?
You need to check your facts regarding pollution from power plants, in that you stated in your video that nuclear plants pollute. Pollution in context of cars applies to CO2 or byproducts of combustion. Power plants using coal, oil, or natural gas pollute much, much more than nuclear. Nuclear plants produce radioactive waste but no pollution compared to the alternatives. I think the best way to put this is that the total environmental impact in owning an electric powered car depends on where you live. Regardless, the best way to make a decision on what to buy is if you like the car, use economics and not environmentalism to tilt the scale. Buy cars like this when it costs less (price + operating expense), it's hard to go wrong that way.
You have to store that atomic waste somewhere and I don't see natural gas polluting enough to worry about. Doesn't matter, and electric car is NOT pollution free, The only reason cars like this are economical is because government forces taxpayers to pay for them with tax credits both by buying and getting out of the gas tax. Take away tax credits and electric cars are doomed, as well as all the solar and wind power taxpayers are footing the bill for...
But, you're not actually saving $1800/yr, because you have to pay for the electricity to charge the battery, which many people have to do at home. When I calculated the cost using a special calculator designed for this purpose, I found that I would pay as much in electricity to charge battery driving an average of 25 miles/day, as I would pay for gas for the same mileage at a rate of about 42 mpg on this car. In sum, I would just be using electricity for about the same cost I would have paid for gas over the same year. Here's the link for anyone who wants to do the math: www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=phev1Prompt
chad haire In the USA. I calculated at my state's rate of .16/kwh. The calculator at that link makes it easy to figure. It's a wash for me at 11,000 miles/year - electric costs the same as hybrid gas mileage. It's still about 75% less than the cost of gas for the same # of miles in a regular gas vehicle. It's just that using electric doesn't save over gas in the same Clarity PHEV, at least in my state.
well other sources say it only costs about $1 electric to go 40 miles vs gas but I have not done the math. it is not the type of car i would own anyway, and I charged y car from the business next door so i didn't pay anyway!
Even though electric power is coming from some percentage fossil fuels, better to have a single source of emmisions that can be monitored easily than thousands of sources (I often see smoke belching cars driving around without a care). And don't minimize all the other fluids and oils needed to keep ice cars on the road, anti freeze, engine and gear oils, etc and how often they are spilled or dumped in the environment. I am a bit of a pessimist myself regarding impact of electric vehicles on the environment because I pretty much believe humans will burn all of the Earth's fossil fuels eventually regardless of how many of us try to reduce our use, Soto some extent use of electric vehicles is just creating the foundations for a time when ice are no longer economical for general use, not stopping any of the eaths fossil fuels from being burned.
I could do fine with 12 volt, We rarely need to drive. I wish some basic cars were offered like a Fit with no options. I don't need a lot of power or features. Just no gas would be cool.
That sucks that a local super market is a whole 15 miles away. Mine is a 12 minute walk. I think 14 hrs would be fine for me. I don't use a car more than 2 to 3 days a week. Or, if I use it more, it is not over 20 miles in a day usually.So, overnight, and I would seldom need worry. Might use a teeny amount of gas week.
Federal, State, and city incentives brought our cost down to the high $20K range. Then we sold our Prius for $14K. In the end we only shelled out $16K for our Clarity. We are retired and on a low income.
One problem with hydrogen is it resembles gas in that it has to be produced and trucked. Currently there is no hydrogen infrastructure so it would have to be built out. Electricity already has an extensive infrastructure. In our own case we charge our Clarity with our roof solar, can't do that with hydrogen.
47 miles! On electric Wow! Lol your actual mileage may vary. Good looking tho. Right with you on interiors...too bizarre. Th whole car is Star Trekky .Lol, flip phone! So you! Perfect. Parking lol!, perfect!, Too funny. Charger didn’t work?
They won't give us a bigger tank. If the electric range is not sufficiently better than the gas range, California (the primary market) will not certify it as a "Plug In Hybrid" when it comes to tax purposes. So, unless if the battery system gets larger, the gas tank will stay small. Something similar happened to the BMW i3, which got an artificially limited tank in the US when it launched (most of the world got the full-sized gas tank). Only later, when the battery improved a bit, did the full gas tank become unlocked in later versions.
Um. No your facts are WRONG. Most electric producing facilites are now using natural gas, or even solar. Its not Coal or Nuclear. Thats NOT the only two producing electricity.
I assume most utility companies give consumers the option to buy clean energy. Ours does in RURAL Minnesota. Percentages mean nothing when the uneducated consumers simply don't opt in to the program.
Our local electric company uses zero coal fired power. As of 2016 it was 40% natural gas, large hydro 24%, small hydro 4%, wind 25%. On top of that we use our house roof solar to charge the car.
Great detailed review. It would be interesting to know why the charger at the store did not work like it was supposed to. The car actually looks pretty good in the color they gave you, which I am guessing is called Modern Steel. If you live in California, this car will cost you a lot more to drive because Jerry Brown loves to kill birds with windmills and he thinks worthless solar schemes are going to save the world. Governor Brown and the California Legislature have driven up the cost of electricity to the moon for no good reason. I suggest people read *The Renewable Energy Disaster* website at renewable.50webs.com If they ever replace the lithium batteries in the Clarity and other hybrids with cheaper, more efficient carbon batteries a company in Japan claims to be working on, it would make a lot more economic sense to own. It's a nice car now for people with money to burn.
I have been impressed with the renewables in Europe. Much of Germany has solar, and it is not even a sunny place. CA should have it pretty much on every building by now.. but, Murika.
CORRECTION - You have been impressed by all the hype. No one is more dishonest than the religious cult of windmill worship and climate hysteria. See *"Are solar and wind finally cheaper than fossil fuels?"* business.financialpost.com/opinion/lawrence-solomon-are-solar-and-wind-finally-cheaper-than-fossil-fuels-not-a-chance
That is a trite statement. Everyone does. You also like to eat. We make food with energy, so foolish energy policy increases the cost of food. Please, think the issues through instead of just jumping on a bandwagon to hell when you apparently do not know any of the real facts and the mathematics of energy and food production.
The argument that EVs still pollute because the electric power plant does, is missing a major fact. Yes they pollute, however not nearly as much as internal combustion vehicles. The reason being they have economies of scale and pollution mitigation devices that scrub their discharges. Power plants achieve levels of efficiency IC cars never will. Plus the fact that electric power plants can use low or non polluting fuels such as wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, etc. even natural gas fired plants are less polluting than millions of gasoline powered cars.
Wind and solar will NEVER make it as a major power supply.......tried in Europe did not work so well and expensive. Hydro only works if you live near a dam. Only real clean source that works is nuclear but the green club wont allow it. Coal will be around for a long time. Plus the environment kooks are trying to close public lands from mining, making battery materials harder to get. It will be a long long time before electric cars take over.
chad haire. This quote is direct from FPLs website “Already one of the cleanest energy companies in the nation, FPL recently announced a groundbreaking ’30-by-30’ plan to install 30 million solar panels by 2030, making Florida a world leader in solar energy. This year, solar will outpace coal and oil combined as a percentage of FPL’s energy mix. In other words, we’ll soon be generating more energy from the sun than from power plants fueled by coal and oil.” You remind me of my late father who proclaimed that the Beatles would never make it.

Regarding price, don't forget that the Clarity qualifies for the full $7,500 tax credit for plug-in vehicles. BTW, the paddle shifters serve the purpose of braking without using the brake to charge the battery on declines. That's what I've been told why mine has it (and of course to floor it when needed).
I thought the sun visor did slide back in my test drive of this car. Odd. Great car.
Yes the sun visor slides.
it does
That rear styling is definitely 'unique'.
a bit on the wide side--like Hillary's ass...LOL
Honda lists the charging times as 2.5 hours on level 2 (most public chargers) and on a regular outlet as 12hours. As for where ever said it was 30 min they might’ve been talking about the now discontinued clarity Electric, which only has about 90 miles of range.
When charging public make sure you do not have a set timer through the Honda app, if so it will prevent you from actually charging it out and about. I learned that the hardway :)
The 240v level-2 charge takes 2-1/2 hours for a full charge, not half an hour.
never said half hour-said 2.5 hours...better watch the video again.
The temperature dropped over the past week or two here:
In 35-55°F I manage a comparatively small 42 miles on a charge (heated seats, minimal cabin heater) but paradoxically get ~500 miles on a full tank and charge (mixed city and highway). I think this may have to do with the denser, more oxygen-rich air in cooler weather.
~~~
As far as battery charging times, it takes about 14-15 hours on a standard household outlet in the hot and about 12-14 in the cool and about 14 in the cold.
Charging times vary based on amperage with the 240v chargers. I have regular access to a 6 kW charger and it takes ~2.5 hours to charge. I have never fully charged on a 30 kW charger, but have gotten about 50% in 45 minutes. Not quite as good as what you heard online, but pretty alright I guess.
~~~
For hybrid driving, my recommendation is to have between 25% and 65% battery. It doesn’t run the engine as hard trying to drive the car and charge the battery simultaneously and you stay in the range that Lithium Ion batteries are most comfortable. This will make the battery pack last longer and help you drive at higher efficiency. (It’s also quieter so there’s that 😸)
~~~
Of course them’s just my 2¢ and your mileage may vary.
As far as the pollution facts go, yes - you are right. In a lot of states, the energy is pretty dirty. Still usually more miles per kg of carbon added to the atmosphere in EVs than ICE cars, but it varies. Luckily, where I live, there is a lot of hydro and solar supplementing the coal and nuclear and we have fairly clean energy as a result.
Now I just need my apartment to let me tack a solar array to the roof. Then I’ll be 🎶drivin’ on sunshine! Woaaah🎶
Hi: Is the clarity a good car? From a price view point, it is a honda; and the $7500 + $1500 tax credit makes the price really attractive for a Honda. I am looking at the prius prime vs the clarity. thx.
@@pokerchannel6991 thanks for the spam and calling me a "fuck tard" and "disgusting idiot" then asking my opinion on the car. That really encourages healthy discussion. I'm 1000% woke now that you berated me on this internet comment section!
I hope you could hear my tone there. If you couldn't, it was sarcasm.
Though in answer to your question, it is a great car for me. I spend less on fuel (combined electric and gas) than in my old vehicle. The interior is also pretty nice for the price point and feels like it will last longer than the interiors of Hyundai and Kia vehicles my family has had in the past. The performance is there in all modes but eco, but I still find I have little trouble overtaking another vehicle in eco mode. The infotainment is pretty great but I'd wait a generation to see if it improves.
In regards to the Prius Prime vs Clarity thing, I find the rear seats in the Clarity are nicer than the Prius and the front seats to be on-par. The Prius Prime infotainment system looks flashy but lack some features that techies would require (Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, etc.) and features a somewhat dated-looking design. The electric-only range also isn't as much as the Clarity, nor does it perform as well at highway speeds.
10/10 would buy again
Maybe re-evaluate how you internet
This car is not about saving the planet. It’s a great car. Electric motors are fantastic off the line and so quiet. Do yourself a favor and get one. Mine cost $30000 -$9500in rebates and tax credits. Final price $21,000. Best car for that price
and having taxpayers pay for someone else's car is what needs to stop...
Well it is a way to jump start the conversion away from Internal Combustion Engines. China and Europe are pushing electric cars. Gas cars are on the way out. It will take some years but as of today the public hasn't made the switch yet so it needs a kick in the pants. Not my fault though. I just see the reasoning.
BTW, for real-world pricing, I have seen the Clarity Plug-In Touring model selling in the Portland, OR area for $34,500 to $35,000, not taking into account the tax credit.
There is no 30 minute charge mode in the Clarity.
base model with fed and ca state rebates/tax rebate is like $25k, not bad for a luxury plugin.
7 gallons. 42MPG =294 + EV range of 40+ miles =. “Don’t go on long trips”
What?
EV range means nothing on a long trip====50 reserve==245 mile range==at 80 mph lots of fuel stops...I could do better in a Hellcat.
@@chadhaire1711 clarity gives about 400miles on a long trip. If you’re driving EV on highway you’re doing it wrong.
@@randomvideotosee 7 gallons on 42 mpg is less than 300 miles Goober----your own math shows that--go back to school
@@chadhaire1711 lol it’s 294 at the very minimum of 42mpg which it gets still above that. Also EV is around 50 miles when you save that for under 55mph and drive properly. In super below freezing if you use the battery to heat you still get up to 40 miles b You’re getting well over a minimum of 330 to 350 miles on a single fill up with gas and electric. If you drive under 50 miles a day you don’t even touch gas. If you drive over 300 miles a day maybe the car isn’t for that. No need to keep trying to downplay actual data that’s out there.
@@randomvideotosee I drive these for a living--you will never see more than 42 mpg off this and anyone who claims more is either lying or driving down the 75 mph freeway at 50 mph blocking traffic.....and needs to be taken off the road. In this state the Highway patrol can--and should--pull you over for hyper-miling and stalling traffic. Spending all this money and tech to save a few gallons of gas is idiotic.....a small Toyota Yaris I drove got 33/40 mpg with 37 average and at $18,000--a far better solution to this electric nonsense.
There is a market for electric cars--on the low end a small city commuter, and at the top end 900 hp performance cars that can run with a gas guzzler Hellcat. But this move to replace every day cars with electric will be an issue--the public does NOT want these. They dont sell----they are a gimmick
Your facts about pollution relative to power generation facilities and vehicles are indeed facts. One thing that is commonly overlooked when people are saying these things is that if you take an electric motor and put it in a car you will get double, triple, or in some cases nearly quadruple the miles per gallon energy equivalent, depending on the rest of the configurations of the car like mass and how you drive it and such, as compared to an ICE vehicle. Yes, the emissions come from a power plant but when taken as a whole system you're getting a minimal double the miles per gallon as with using a standard internal combustion engine vehicle, relative to the amount of pollution generated. This fact should be celebrated and cause for good will towards ushering in the electric vehicle era, not another reason to poo poo on electric vehicles. Relative to the emissions coming from a power plant that is not necessarily a bad thing as the overall grid is becoming more renewable over time. My vehicle gets 114 mpge. Said in a different way, the battery in my 100% the electric Nissan Leaf has less energy in it than is contained within one gallon of gasoline, which it seems like a small amount of energy, and it is, a testament to the efficiency of the electric motor versus they mostly wasted energy of internal combustion engines. I can drive my car, real world, about 100 miles (and when I combine that with the energy coming from the solar panels on my home it cost me a grand total of $0.06 to operate my vehicle last month). Compare that to all of the associated maintenance costs and running cost of an internal combustion engine vehicle of similar mass and power specs and you're looking at something that gets between 20 and 30 miles per gallon or so. Plus, the ride is exceptionally smooth and quite, with all of that low end torque and acceleration, which is great for in-town commutes. It's a dream to drive. Sort of makes me feel like I'm driving a Rolls Royce or something.
Electric cars will NEVER be practical, especially as far as "pollution free" until the country goes to NUCLEAR POWER..but the greenies won't allow it so the future of electric cars will take decades to turn out well....and that is just the way it is.
Aaron Bounds; you are correct in your view. There is a saying, ‘perfect is the enemy of good’. Electric cars cause less pollution overall than internal combustion only cars.
Yes, power plants pollute but that can be reduced at the source by increasing renewables (solar/wind) in the power mix. Also gas power plants pollute less than coal plants so ending coal will reduce pollution.
Even in rural Minnesota we have the option to use renewable (wind, solar etc as provided by the utility company) energy to power our homes. I do so, there for there's no coal etc being used. We also have options to charge these vehicles overnight at substantially reduced rates ...4 cents per kwh. Been driving a Nissan Leaf for 5 years (97,000 miles) and it's pretty practical for my needs.
I can get to work and back with electric pretty cool
This does not support Level 3 charging.
If you say so--the owners manual doesn't say anything....
"Level 1 charging can be done by plugging your car into a 120V household outlet (with a dedicated 15 amp circuit), and is convenient with the Level 1 charging cord that comes with the Clarity Electric. DC Fast Charging is the fastest type of charging currently available, comes standard with the Clarity Electric and is available at many public charging stations throughout California and Oregon. You need to check your facts regarding pollution from power plants, in that you stated in your video that nuclear plants pollute. Pollution in context of cars applies to CO2 or byproducts of combustion. Power plants using coal, oil, or natural gas pollute much, much more than nuclear. Nuclear plants produce radioactive waste but no pollution compared to the alternatives. I think the best way to put this is that the total environmental impact in owning an electric powered car depends on where you live. Regardless, the best way to make a decision on what to buy is if you like the car, use economics and not environmentalism to tilt the scale. Buy cars like this when it costs less (price + operating expense), it's hard to go wrong that way.
You have to store that atomic waste somewhere and I don't see natural gas polluting enough to worry about. Doesn't matter, and electric car is NOT pollution free, The only reason cars like this are economical is because government forces taxpayers to pay for them with tax credits both by buying and getting out of the gas tax. Take away tax credits and electric cars are doomed, as well as all the solar and wind power taxpayers are footing the bill for...
But, you're not actually saving $1800/yr, because you have to pay for the electricity to charge the battery, which many people have to do at home. When I calculated the cost using a special calculator designed for this purpose, I found that I would pay as much in electricity to charge battery driving an average of 25 miles/day, as I would pay for gas for the same mileage at a rate of about 42 mpg on this car. In sum, I would just be using electricity for about the same cost I would have paid for gas over the same year. Here's the link for anyone who wants to do the math: www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=phev1Prompt
But in what country? Electric is cheap in USA. Super high in Asia and Aussie land.
chad haire In the USA. I calculated at my state's rate of .16/kwh. The calculator at that link makes it easy to figure. It's a wash for me at 11,000 miles/year - electric costs the same as hybrid gas mileage. It's still about 75% less than the cost of gas for the same # of miles in a regular gas vehicle. It's just that using electric doesn't save over gas in the same Clarity PHEV, at least in my state.
well other sources say it only costs about $1 electric to go 40 miles vs gas but I have not done the math. it is not the type of car i would own anyway, and I charged y car from the business next door so i didn't pay anyway!
Even though electric power is coming from some percentage fossil fuels, better to have a single source of emmisions that can be monitored easily than thousands of sources (I often see smoke belching cars driving around without a care). And don't minimize all the other fluids and oils needed to keep ice cars on the road, anti freeze, engine and gear oils, etc and how often they are spilled or dumped in the environment. I am a bit of a pessimist myself regarding impact of electric vehicles on the environment because I pretty much believe humans will burn all of the Earth's fossil fuels eventually regardless of how many of us try to reduce our use, Soto some extent use of electric vehicles is just creating the foundations for a time when ice are no longer economical for general use, not stopping any of the eaths fossil fuels from being burned.
Great viedo. Thx.
There is no cargo cover in the Clarity.
really--what was that in the trunk at 9;33 -9;38.????...wasn't a rocket launcher.....
I love you, cranky PHEV daddy.
Forget hybrids...see my Camaro SS V-8 video--a real car.
I could do fine with 12 volt, We rarely need to drive. I wish some basic cars were offered like a Fit with no options. I don't need a lot of power or features. Just no gas would be cool.
No options? Only rich yuppies can afford these 'economy" cars..
and this is why people like me seek used EV's and new Mitsubishi Mirages.
That sucks that a local super market is a whole 15 miles away. Mine is a 12 minute walk. I think 14 hrs would be fine for me. I don't use a car more than 2 to 3 days a week. Or, if I use it more, it is not over 20 miles in a day usually.So, overnight, and I would seldom need worry. Might use a teeny amount of gas week.
Federal, State, and city incentives brought our cost down to the high $20K range. Then we sold our Prius for $14K. In the end we only shelled out $16K for our Clarity. We are retired and on a low income.
Retired on low income doesn’t allow someone to buy new cars. Especially ?$16,000 or more ones!
wonder if you'll ever get a hydrogen car in the future?
still waiting..but I would rather get a Hellcat..
One problem with hydrogen is it resembles gas in that it has to be produced and trucked. Currently there is no hydrogen infrastructure so it would have to be built out. Electricity already has an extensive infrastructure. In our own case we charge our Clarity with our roof solar, can't do that with hydrogen.
Once you enjoy the convenience of home charging, a hydrogen car would be a step backwards.
47 miles! On electric Wow! Lol your actual mileage may vary. Good looking tho. Right with you on interiors...too bizarre. Th whole car is Star Trekky .Lol, flip phone! So you! Perfect. Parking lol!, perfect!, Too funny. Charger didn’t work?
They won't give us a bigger tank. If the electric range is not sufficiently better than the gas range, California (the primary market) will not certify it as a "Plug In Hybrid" when it comes to tax purposes.
So, unless if the battery system gets larger, the gas tank will stay small.
Something similar happened to the BMW i3, which got an artificially limited tank in the US when it launched (most of the world got the full-sized gas tank). Only later, when the battery improved a bit, did the full gas tank become unlocked in later versions.
If only california would leave the union-then we can have 49 sane states...
I haven't heard of this California restriction on plug-in gas tank size. Where did you find that information?
Nuclear power plants do not create pollution.
What do you call nuclear waste? Dinner?
Great Review. I would be all in if this was the Accord body with this tech. Kind of ugly IMHO
accord is boring--this car got looks on the street
Of course looks are subjective. I like the looks of the Clarity.
Um. No your facts are WRONG. Most electric producing facilites are now using natural gas, or even solar. Its not Coal or Nuclear. Thats NOT the only two producing electricity.
natural gas is 29% of US energy use and solar is a whopping 1.7%....go back to school and get back with me in 50 years.
I assume most utility companies give consumers the option to buy clean energy. Ours does in RURAL Minnesota. Percentages mean nothing when the uneducated consumers simply don't opt in to the program.
Our local electric company uses zero coal fired power. As of 2016 it was 40% natural gas, large hydro 24%, small hydro 4%, wind 25%. On top of that we use our house roof solar to charge the car.
Great detailed review. It would be interesting to know why the charger at the store did not work like it was supposed to. The car actually looks pretty good in the color they gave you, which I am guessing is called Modern Steel. If you live in California, this car will cost you a lot more to drive because Jerry Brown loves to kill birds with windmills and he thinks worthless solar schemes are going to save the world. Governor Brown and the California Legislature have driven up the cost of electricity to the moon for no good reason. I suggest people read *The Renewable Energy Disaster* website at renewable.50webs.com If they ever replace the lithium batteries in the Clarity and other hybrids with cheaper, more efficient carbon batteries a company in Japan claims to be working on, it would make a lot more economic sense to own. It's a nice car now for people with money to burn.
I have been impressed with the renewables in Europe. Much of Germany has solar, and it is not even a sunny place. CA should have it pretty much on every building by now.. but, Murika.
That is a trite statement. Everyone does. You also like to eat. We make food with energy, so foolish energy policy increases the cost of food. Please, think the issues through instead of just jumping on a bandwagon to hell when you apparently do not know any of the real facts and the mathematics of energy and food production.
The argument that EVs still pollute because the electric power plant does, is missing a major fact. Yes they pollute, however not nearly as much as internal combustion vehicles. The reason being they have economies of scale and pollution mitigation devices that scrub their discharges. Power plants achieve levels of efficiency IC cars never will. Plus the fact that electric power plants can use low or non polluting fuels such as wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, etc. even natural gas fired plants are less polluting than millions of gasoline powered cars.
Wind and solar will NEVER make it as a major power supply.......tried in Europe did not work so well and expensive. Hydro only works if you live near a dam.
Only real clean source that works is nuclear but the green club wont allow it. Coal will be around for a long time. Plus the environment kooks are trying to close public lands from mining, making battery materials harder to get.
It will be a long long time before electric cars take over.
chad haire. This quote is direct from FPLs website “Already one of the cleanest energy companies in the nation, FPL recently announced a groundbreaking ’30-by-30’ plan to install 30 million solar panels by 2030, making Florida a world leader in solar energy. This year, solar will outpace coal and oil combined as a percentage of FPL’s energy mix. In other words, we’ll soon be generating more energy from the sun than from power plants fueled by coal and oil.” You remind me of my late father who proclaimed that the Beatles would never make it.
@@randsipe224 I remember when the Germans tried to go 100% solar......same PR claims as this, The electric bills went through the roof, and there was such a shortage of electric, they had to switch to a coal plant from next door Austria. Al Gore and his cronies made a fortune off the global warming/clean energy scam getting hundreds of millions in government loans for "clean energy" companies, then when they all went broke, the only thing that got cleaned was the taxpayer bank accounts, while Al Gore made a fortune on these scams (flying around in a private jet, and old polluting fuel guzzler Gulf Stream model, and buying a house that uses more electric than a factory. Does that sound like someone who is worried about global warming?). And our old pal Bernie Sanders is so worried about climate change, he has guzzled more aviation fuel flying around in a private jet than you will use in your hybrid car in your lifetime. @@chadhaire1711, Florida ranks 8th among all states in terms of solar energy potential, not far behind some of the best SW states.
Pull up any one of a number of solar energy maps and this will become obvious. I you read Al Gores book you would realize he never advocated changing ones lifestyle but rather advocated a change in government policy. Solar has its limitations. 100% solar is not the goal and some things such as aircraft must rely on fossil fuels. But solar is an extremely Beneficial source of clean energy to augment other forms. It is currently at parity or cheaper than many other fuels, it is renewable and non polluting. You are obviously a climate change denier. Fortunately a shrinking group as most rational people realize that climate scientists know more than they do. There are however many examples such as yourself as described by The Dunning Kruger effect.
@@randsipe224 I knew you would do a classic "Hillary Pivot" and selectively edit a response...not gonna happen here. People who challenge man-made climate change are NOT a shrinking group. Al Gores global warming movement was at a peak--about 20 years ago. When NONE of his predictions came true, the movement (and all the $$$ contributions, which was the entire point of the scam) came to a halt. He said we had until 2000 until all the ice melted, the coastal cities were under water, etc....NONE happened. Ten years ago he went to Miami, and said on a radio show the sea level was rising and as proof because he saw flooding in the streets....someone had to explain how the ocean tide rises and comes in the evenings..LOL.....
I told you how Al Gore and Bernie fly around in private jets and own multiple homes (Bernie has 3 now), and you dismiss it by saying these people never advocated a change is lifestyle, just government policy--what a load of CRAP. A change in government policy FORCES a change in lifestyle, a lifestyle that is NOT the style Al Gore and Bernie have. If these people really believed man made global warming was real, they would not be leading such a life in the first place.
The planet has been warming for 6,000 years. New York used to be covered in ice, and mammoth bones are often dug up in construction projects. The pyramids in Egypt are surrounded in sand, but 6,000 years ago we now know it was green grass and rivers. Hint: there were no cars and coal plants back then.
Man made global warming is a hoax who's only purpose is to create more global control over industry, people, and create new tax and spend programs, in which rich countries will be forced to send wealth to "poor" countries in the name of "climate change"..oops... wait? Why is it called "climate change"? I thought it was global warming? Ah yes but the ice caps did not melt, the polar bears did not die (in fact the population has INCREASED), so now any "CHANGE" in climate proves climate change.
I have been down this road before--you are a NAIVE person who does not understand how the world really works, and are being fed a load of SHIT.
