  • We railfans love to find hotspots. Places where you can see lots of trains without moving around much. Baldwin, Florida is such a place. I spent an 18 hour day including driving up there and back recently. I had a pretty good day.

I visited the Baldwin yard once while taking a railroad concepts class during my time as a contractor for CSX. I was amazed at how smoothly everything operated. The Yardmaster is a true multi-tasker. He was able to talk to our group and keep track of all the traffic coming in and out of the yard at the same time. I work as a CAD operator for a local railroad signal engineering firm. It's nice seeing how signals work in real life settings.

    Danny,
I'm retired Navy and ran local and through freight between Baldwin and Tampa for a year in 2003. Your videos bring back some good memories. For those that do not know there's a definite skill to switching cars without taking more than a step or two. When new you'll run for ever and get wet in the rain until learning to switch smart. Good memories, and would have loved to make it a second career if not for the difficulty of being junior on the board. Being displaced on the board makes it a challenging life. With that said nothing cooler in life than running a train at 50 or 60 through a tight turn and crossings between Jax and Wildwood. Thanks for the memories. Bob j

I recall seeing the 1776 painted unit at Baldwin, from the I-10 bridge back in 1978. The crazy kid in the car waving wildly at that lead engine was me. I miss SCL. CSX is larger and better in most ways, but I will always have a special place in my heart for those black and yellow locomotives, with Mars lights, of SCL. You not only heard them coming towards you, but felt them back then.

You know, rumor has it that there once was a young lad with a name much like yours, who tried his hand at being a railroader, quite a few decades ago and I even imagined what that might have been like on a regular basis, after having watched you in your latest incarnation...and the flashback that I had almost seemed real...and I remembered the thought that I had as you got off the locomotive. It would sure be nice if all the new hires that were coming up through the ranks were as good as that one...and it still holds true to this day! I'm proud to have known you and keep up the good work! -MLV.. (Engineer, retired~ 40 yrs. of service.)

A coworker whom I worked with 20 years lost his battle with covid, a hell of a conductor who I'll miss tremendously. I've never had anything jump on me and take ahold and not let go! My wife who is actually a pediatric physician said during my worse days she could see the life leaving me hourly. Of course she only told me this in the last couple of days as I recovered. Always just love watching your train videos Danny. I’m in the aviation business as a mechanic for AA here in Tulsa, but still always get a thrill out of being the first one at a rail crossing to watch a BNSF or UP training go rolling by. Grew up as a kid in Waterloo, Iowa and the RI ran by at the end of our street. At night we’d peddle our bikes hard as we could go watch the 9:30 Rocket go roaring past heading south. On the way home from school walking along the tracks, could sure dilly dallying along if I saw a distant signal light turn red, knowing I’d get to watch a freight switch out cars at the siding tracks at the end of our street. But still love trains. Thanks for your information and great train videos. Be safe!

Love your vids! I’m a truck driver and have been frequenting the bone valley almost weekly from up north. Always going through Baldwin, Waldo, Hawthorn and of course Mulberry! Always looking for the sites you record, but kinda hard to pull over and train spot, so thanks for the vids!!!

From what you described, Danny, it would seem Baldwin Yard to CSX is like what Davis Yard (Roseville, CA) is to Union Pacific: a vital block-distribution hub for a high traffic volume region, even with flat-switching.

I've enjoyed Danny for a while now and I'm not that familiar with Florida railroads but I love his take on them. I live in NE Ohio and there are several locations between Cleveland and Buffalo where NS and CSX run close together which can make for some decent railfanning at times.

I remember driving past Baldwin on my way to Jax one day and spotting the just-shut-down Ringling Brothers circus train parked in the yard.
Every once in a while they extrude a train out the south end that makes it clear into Gainesville, though it's been a few years since I've actually seen one in town.

Foraker---there used to be a small station w siding a few miles west of St. Regis on The Milwaukee Road. After the construction proceeded far enough west the town basically dried up. I did find about 3 old log cabins on the hillside opposite.

I, also, watch Virtual Railfan and I've been seeing a lot of Amazon containers on intermodals. Have you seen many of those in Florida?
I love watching your videos because you are, always, passing on knowledge that is interesting and informative.
Thanks for being there and making videos about interesting stuff.
