    Have had my sigma f3.5 for years and really enjoy it. Comparing it to the canon 10-18, The autofocus, build quality and low light ability is superior. And the sharpness at higher focal length is definitely as good as the canon. It just gets a little soft at the edges when you drop it to f3.5. But the main thing is the build quality, it’s a solid piece of kit.

    I have always followed your videos Christopher. And you have been of great help informing us of details you review on. When I first saw your Sigma 8-16mm review, it has been on my wish list since. Was lucky enough that I was able to get one for a second hand for just USD329.00, mint condition. Seemed like the first owner did not know how maximize its use and gave up photography. Presently saw all his gears are for sale from a used camera gear online website. Consistently, as you said, its sharp and I have validated all your tests! You tend to smile after you have taken a shot instead of a hovering question marks above your head :) Thank you for being there sharing your insights and reviews. With high regards.

    Christopher, this is a very good comparison review!
    Thanks a lot!
    I purchased the Canon 10-18 recently.
    I am very happy with it. Although at wide open apertures it causes hefty vignetting, at f/8 it is awesome. Moreover the 'IS' helps you with 4-stop stabilization! Simply incredible!
    Even with f/8, you can catch up with shutter speeds of lenses with f/2.8 (that is exactly 4 stops!).
    Excellent value and best price / performance!

    I bought the Tokina 11-16 and I really like it. It's probably the best lens I've ever had, as far as optical and build quality. The only thing I don't like is the AF, which isn't enough accurate to be trusted each and every time, as I do with all my Canon lenses. Years ago I tried the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 and it was awful, it was ok in the center, but boy the conrners were unusable, and I tried on a less demanding 450D APS-C sensor; I can't imagine how bad can it be on a 24MP sensor...

    I dont think 10-18mm is a "rubbish zoom range" because most of us own kit Lenses with 18-55 Range (Or even the 17-50mm 2.8 which is a great Addon for the 10-18.). So all the Range ist covered from 10-55mm.
    The 10-18 is sharper and than most of the others at half the cost. Out of all these Zooms, id get the 10-18. If i wanted a fast aperture (for stars f.e.) i'd get the Rokinon/Samyang/Walimex 12mm f2.0. It's pretty nice!

    Among your videos I did not see a review of the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX, I've been using one of those and while it's OK it's not especially great. For a filmmaker it's probably excellent, but that sliding ring for focus is a little frustrating on a DSLR, I end up finding my focus shifts when trying to switch between modes.
    There's a supposedly used low-use Canon 10-22mm locally available for $300, no hood. Given that it's been a few years since this comparison video was made, would you still look at the Canon 10-22mm as an excellent choice for DSLR and mirrorless, or does some newer lens for ultra wide angle appeal more now? If It matters I'm using a 24MP 77D and am considering getting an M50 for my wife. My principal use is indoors during the day. While f/3.5 isn't wonderful it's better than the 10-18mm and where I'd be using it, having as much zoom as possible would be handy for taking semi-candid family photos while still being able to zoom-out as my subjects get really close to me.

    @csantos2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Christopher. I am a Nikon user and I do astrophotography. I've been shooting on an 18mm lens to get some wide angles on shots as I haven't invested in a star tracking set up yet and thus can't stitch photos together the way I would want to. I do some other non-astro photography as well, but it is always long exposure. I was wondering, given my usage, what your recommendation would be to capture the sharpest images of the night sky. Star trails tend to start around 20 seconds so ideally an aperture that allows me to use a lower ISO setting at 15 seconds would be great, but I am also willing to turn up my ISO settings if the lens really will produce a better shot.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +csantos2 It's really down to trial and error. If you have an APS-C camera then try a lens like the Samyang 16mm f/2. If you're on full-frame, then the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 might be good for you

    • @csantos2
      @csantos2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Frost Photography Interesting. Are you suggesting that because of quality over the ones you reviewed (besides the Canon)? I was hoping to capture more in frame than I currently am at 18mm. I am going on a photo trip to Iceland this summer with a friend to get pictures of the night sky with some great landscapes in the foreground. I will probably also do some daylight stuff too. But I was looking at lenses around 10mm-12mm between F/1.8-F/3.5, although I know F/1.8 isn't realistic. Haha. But I have been torn between the Tokina 11-20mm and the Sigma 10-20mm, and have totally been hoping to find an ultra wide that finds a middle ground between those and the 2x more expensive Nikkor 10-24mm.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +csantos2 Other options might be the Tokina 11-16 (or 11-20) f/2.8, or waiting for the new Tokina 14-20mm f/2 which should be coming out soon

    • @OhLookTopComment
      @OhLookTopComment 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Christopher Frost Photography The reason I ask is that the specific difference seems to be an improved nano coating that greatly reduces lens flare, which was the major complaint mentioned in the optics portion. Since the zoom range won't affect me very much for what this lens would be doing, and with the sharpness and otherwise strong optics for currently ~ $400 on amazon, it seems like quite an attractive option since I intend on also buying a high end polarizing filter. I'm just a tad worried if the flare on the mark II isn't quite as improved as I had maybe thought.

      Thanks Chris! I actually got a chance to sample the Tokina for a morning and in comparison tests with my 10-18 I actually think the 10-18 performs better. As you say the Tokina's main selling point is the 2.8 but I have the Sigma 17-70 f2.8 (again thanks to you) so I don't think I need a super wide angle fast lens as well. Hi, Christopher. First of all, thank you very much for the so incredible and systematic work you do in this videos. You are my first reference when I update my equipment little by little and nowadays I'm thinking on buying the Canon EF-S 10-18. Let me ask you a question that worries me: a second information I use is the well-known dxomark tests and, in the case of the Canon EF-S 10-18, it gets a very poor performance in terms of sharpness. What are these people doing? Your images on the corners demonstrate the opposite. Have you any explanation? Thanks a lot!!!

    • @christopherfrost

    For the Sigma 8-16mm's price, you can get the Canon 10-18 and a Samyang 8mm fisheye. Now that's a nice combo for going ultra-wide. I have the Canon 10-18 and it's a great lens. I'm planning to buy the Samyang 8mm fisheye.
    Very nice video comparison.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cristian Stancu That's a good point! Although remember, the fisheye lens obviously gives a lot of distortion, which is intentional. With the Sigma 8-16 lens, straight lines remain straight.

    • @CristianStancu
      @CristianStancu 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Frost Photography Yes, that's true. I guess it is great to have a 8mm rectilinear lens. Although you could straighten the 8mm fisheye image, with a bit of processing, if needed.
      I would definitely like to have both lenses in my bag.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello
    So to summarize, if I want to shoot some indoor flats (Airbnb) for example…
    Do you suggest a tokina 11-16 (20) or a Sigma 8-16 mm ???
    Thanks ;)

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Igor Laski The Tokina will let in more light, and be easier to use. But the 8-16 will give you an angle so wide that your flats will look huge (if that's what you want)

    Hey,
    I'm going on a trip soon and I was looking at getting an ultra wide lens for landscapes. I have a canon 600d, the lenses I was looking at are the Canon 10-18mm 4.5-5.6 STM, the Samyang 16mm f2, and the Samyang 14mm f2.8. I am comfortable using manual focus and I am leaning towards the 16mm because it has filter threads, its sharp, and it has a fast aperture. I would really appreciate a recommendation because you seem to know your stuff about lenses, thanks!

    • @jan.tichavsky
      @jan.tichavsky 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacob Macy For a trip I would go with the 10-18mm, which I have myself. You get flexibility with zoom, IS helps you compensate somewhat the slow aperture, and it is compact and light lens. For landscapes you would stop down to the sweet spot anyway, so it's great match I would say. For the money it's really great value, real surprise from Canon :)

    Hi there, I just subscribed! Loving your detailed reviews with informative image samples, keep it up!
    I'm choosing between a Canon 10-18mm and a 10-22mm and driving myself crazy trying to decide, each of those lenses has its strong side.
    I'm getting a Canon 77d and the next lens I have is a 24-70mm. Not really sure if a 2-6mm gap is going to bother me.
    I need a lens for shooting interior in tight, fairly dark spaces and also landscapes in mostly sunny weather. I might get into taking a bit of video but again not sure (my previous 550d didn't give me that option).
    The price difference doesn't really matter, since I've already found a used (but almost new) 10-22mm in the same price range as the 10-18mm...
    Please help, any advice would be really appreciated!!

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd just go for the 10-18. Where it lacks in maximum aperture, it has image stabilization to help

      @minbuichai4512 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am facing the same situation like yours. A used Canon 10-22mm (about the same price) or new 10-18mm. Chris pointed out that the IS helps to over come the smaller aperture and I have two pro photographers commenting that don’t be deceived by the look of this new 10-18mm lens, it looks cheap but it creates very sharp images. Hmmm... puzzle! 10-22mm just give you better useful range and the metal mount means a lot to me... tough choices

    Hi Christopher! Thank you for the great video.
    I am looking to buy a new gear next month and I've been very confused about what to buy. My old setup was a Canon Xti with Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye that I use for skydiving. I am going to buy the Canon EOS Rebel T6i and for lens I am between: Tokina 10-17mm F/3.5-4.5 DX Autofocus Fisheye, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM or the Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM, but this would be my last option since the price is double of the other, also double of the weight and is only f/4. What would be the best option? Should I just keep the Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye? Which I don't see much wider when using with my xti.
    Thank so much.
    Peace
