I'd say Crime and Punishment has similar vibe like The Secret History. There's funeral scene in both bookswhich is quite overwhelming. Also the theme of intentional murder that traumatizes its characters is common in both books.
Crime and Punishment was written in victorian timeframe if that counts 😸

I JUST FINISHED VILLETTE AND CAME ACROSS THIS VIDEO!~ Perfect, simply perfect recommendations Alex! Funnily enough the one I haven't read is The Secret History XD (Wuthering Heights wasn't my thing)

Have to comment seeing Villette!! Such a n underrated novel! Well, not underrated among intellectuals but among modern common readers. Charlotte Bronte is such an extraordinary writer but I feel like Jane Eyre got all the credits.

This is something I never knew I needed! Villette is very high on my eventual Victorian TBR. Loved this discussion!

Omg Alex, I can finally hear you well! Thank you for doing the mic thing. I adored TSH but If We Were Villains is tied with it. It’s an incredible read. Very autumnal and based around students studying Shakespeare. Also, I read Wuthering Heights for the first time last year and I fell in love! I put it off for years because I was intimidated by the poor reviews and I kicked myself for doing that. It was nearly the perfect book. Now I must read Villette.

That's what I've heard about IWWV! I bet I can find a copy at the library next so it sounds like a good pick for autumn indeed

omg i just bought a copy of villette without knowing if it was good (i’m impulsive and was very convinced bc it was a 1904 copy for only 20 dollars in good condition) so it’s nice to see this recommendation 😄😄

I haven’t read The Secret History but everything I hear about it makes me think I’ll love it. I’m excited to hear you mention Villette because I love all the other novels you mentioned and Villette is one of my pics this Victober!

The Picture of Dorian Gray was the first thing to come to mind when I saw the title of this video. (also my new favorite fact about you is that you woke up from anesthesia rambling about Jane Eyre. That's a booknerd flex if I ever heard one)

I read Secret History in 2019 and it became one my all time favourite books and probably the best book of 2019 alongside Laws of Human Nature (RG)
Then last year I read The Goldfinch and it absolutely smashed all other books I have read. Immediately became my all time favourite book. Most books (if you are lucky) has one or two ground breaking moments. The Goldfinch has 5-6 of these.
I ventured to re-read the secret history this year but it does not make for a fun re-read. You notice the future of characters before it happens as you retain a lot. Donna Tartt has written 3 books, she writes one every ten years. The third book is trash.

Love Victorian literature and I really liked the books you mentioned! I haven't read The Secret History yet but it's always on my radar. Villette is definitely super interesting. I always say how it frustrated me but weirdly due to that frustration, I rated it very highly? It may not be objectively as "great" as Jane Eyre but I think about it frequently. I'm looking forward to reading Tess this Victober. Ready to have my heart broken i guess lol

I loved Wuthering Heights because everyone was so dramatic but that’s the POINT it’s not accidentally like that. Might be because I’m Mexican and I grew up watching telenovelas but I loved it

You're the second booktuber in 2 days who talked about 'Wuthering Heights' and pronounced it 'Withering Heights'. Is that, like, a "thing" now? Was literally - or maybe literarily - just wondering.
