    Reading "The Song of Achilles" was one of the best decisions that I have made in my 20 years of living.

  • @headwound
    @headwound 2 ปีที่แล้ว +166

    When you said that Achilles should've just not accepted the prophecy and just stayed with Patroclus; that's the heart of the story, he can't. The prophecy is basically inevitable no matter what Achilles does. Towards the end of the book he and Patroclus tried thinking of loopholes of how to escape it and Achilles refused to kill Hector because he knew he'd die after that. But because it was inevitable it happened anyway, the God's found a way for the prophecy to be fulfilled by making Patroclus die because that was the only thing that would make Achilles furious enough.
    Loved this review btw!

      Nailed it. Also the decision was made about three thousand years ago. Achille's Rage is literally the hole point of the Illiad.

    • @tannerv259
      @tannerv259 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No the prophecy said that he could either go to the war and die young but be famous, or not go to war and live a long life w no fame. So they COULD have just stayed together and lived a long happy life together

    • @kikio0529
      @kikio0529 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tannerv259 that's true but it's not the plot of the illiad and it's in character of both Homor's Achilles and a Mycenaean warrior (the early Greeks). And one of the fatal flaws in most Greek stories is some form of hubris. The first line in the book is- in english- is 'Rage. Sing oh Muse of the Rage of Peleus's son Achilles. Murderous. Doomed
      Who costed the Achaeans countless of lifes'

      Yeah in the original myth, Patroclus died fighting in the Trojan war, bc Achilles was mad at the captain of the team, and refused to fight,so Patroclus went out in Achilles’s armor and died to the Trojan prince, and they took off the helmet and saw Patroclus. And Achilles blamed himself for being stubborn and everyone was sad bc everyone loved Patroclus bc he was kind to everyone and anyone.

    I think it's actually better to not have any prejudices about a book at all (rather bad ones). The first time I read the book I didn't cry at all because I was waiting for it to happen. This made me so frustrated that I re-read the end and literally cried my eyes out the more I thought about it.
    (I recommend listening to the song "Achilles come down" it fits the story so well)

    If y'all need a goodish romance book recommendation, I recommend the book named "Pushing the limits" by Katie Mcgarry. It's two broken people and they have their own problems and dealing with family issues and find each other from school and the girl tutors him which at first they were mean to one another but later fall in love and can't stay away from each other and help each other. There are some dark topics but it's good !
