How To Stop Comparing Your Life With Others
There is no denying that social media has its practical uses.
Access to communication, entertainment and information is made more convenient and efficient. Especially during the pandemic, it allowed us to keep in touch with family and friends.
Yet, the pressures from social media are very real and have consequences for all of us. They can affect our mental health and how we feel about ourselves.
Here are some of the pressures on social media I experienced and how I stopped comparing my life with others.
Social Media Pressure And Comparison Trap
It can be easy to assume that the posts we see on social media are 100% real when most of the time, they are just about as realistic as a movie set. Apps are easily available to change how we look, erase a few lines, slim the face or body down, or even alter the backdrop of each photo.
These staged posts, however, create unrealistic benchmarks for personal success, beauty, and happiness. They create some pressure around aging, weight, career, and life milestones, which can trigger us to become self conscious or even feel bad about ourselves.
It's also easy to fall into the trap of thinking that everyone in these posts is having a fantastic time. But the reality is that we all have flat or hard days, even though these may not be shown in our social media feeds.
Personally, I don't spend a lot of time on social media anymore. I only use it to stay in touch with friends and family, get local recommendations, or watch light and inspiring videos.
By unfollowing accounts we no longer resonate with and spending more time offline, we can clearly see the line between fact and fiction. Then we can spare ourselves from societal pressure and prioritize cultivating a life that is genuine for us.
    Stop Comparing With Others
Growing up in the 80s, social media was never a thing. But I jumped on the bandwagon in the mid 2000s when I created an account on Friendster, Multiply.com and eventually Facebook.
What started as a nonchalant sharing of photos and thoughts eventually became a channel for external validation.
Apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Tiktok are designed to be addictive. Studies have shown that likes and comments create a dopamine rush that gives people a high. This rewires our brain to constantly seek approval, validation, and comparison which is nothing but a losing game
It took some mental reprogramming and minimizing social media usage for me to realize that I never needed validation and approval from others in the first place. Because no matter what we say, do, or look like, people will always have opinions based on their current state of mind and never really about us.
As the saying goes, "People will love you, people will hate you, but none of it will have anything to do with you."
Live An Authentic Life And Don't Compare Yourself With Others
The thing about social media is that it forces us to fit in the mold, to follow the crowd. And so this creates the fear of missing out.
I was seeing posts from friends and strangers about their newly built house, a career promotion, a luxury vacation, and so on.
While I'm happy for them, I was experiencing fear of missing out and wishing I was doing something similar.
As I was busy thinking I was missing out, I was actually missing the good things in life I already have.
When we stop looking externally for happiness and recognize that we already have what makes our life worthwhile, our perspective changes. Fear of missing out turns to Joy of Missing out when we realize we don't actually need what others have
At the end of the day, what matters is we find peace and genuine happiness in the life path we choose. Forget about what others have or do with their lives. What makes you the happiest?
We only have one life and it's meant to be lived in a way that enriches us. It's not about what's popular, trendy, or desirable based on social conditioning.
When we do things our own way, at our own time, and according to what we honestly value, we free ourselves from societal pressures and experience a life journey that's much richer, more joyful and authentic for us.

I have my own identity. I don't care what the latest trend is, where someone vacationed, or the latest useless gadget they just bought. I just live my life according to my needs while not buying into over consumption, creating as little waste as possible, and trying to be a good steward to the Earth. Living this way makes me very happy.

I’ve been seeking someone that teaches slowly. The last gal I listen to has moved onto a new fashion project, I’ve went through numerous TH-cam videos and I’m so blessed to finally stumble upon you. Very excited to follow you and your content.

Hi guys, such a great topic you have addressed in this video. Peoples opinions are often less about us and more about their own perceptions, experiences or insecurities.......all of your videos are always positive and uplifting. Camera work is always 💯 🙏🏻 Many Thanks 🙏🏻

Thank you. I want to break free of social media. I live in Los Angeles and am starting the slow life in April 2025 when I move to Hua Hin. Your videos are inspiring. Do you have a video that talks about the costs of living where you do in Chiang Mai? Your house is beautiful and my cat and I would love to find a home like yours. ❤

That's wonderful about starting to live a slow life. I hope you find your cozy home here in Thailand ❤️
I had a video from a year ago about our cost of living here, but it may be a little outdated since certain things have changed. But it's a good topic idea for a future video. 😊
