    • @dkosmari
      @dkosmari 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nietzchan It's not "standard curriculum", and we're talking about Japan here, where schools can vary more on their extracurricular programs than your average "standardized public education system" in your own country.
      It was probably more about making the students "code literate" than actually teaching it. Just like you can learn about Sigma notation for summations in your high school Mathematics class, without actually doing anything useful with it, like manipulating infinite series, checking for convergence, etc. You probably learned divisibility tricks (check if a number is divisible by 3, 4, 6, 8 or 9) without actually being taught modular arithmetic or deriving the equations that generate the tricks. SQL being the standard for retrieving data from structured databases, it would make sense for it to be presented; you don't need to be shown Relational Algebra before you can start making sense of simple SQL queries.

    As a programmer honestly it's really easy to learn a new programming language. Once you get the basics it's just a matter of syntax. The hard part is just learning the first one

    • @dkosmari
      @dkosmari 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      As a programmer, I say that's false. You can learn the syntax and still write the most horrible programs imaginable, simply because you don't know how to use the language's strengths. As the saying goes, "you can write FORTRAN in any language." This is also called the "Sapir-Whorf hypothesis": writing in some language means thinking in that language.

    • @hazamax2139

      @@dkosmari So you can use it... you just don't know how to optimize it. Like talking in a foreign language with other people but not knowing enough to give a presentation or something like that... kinda what I'm doing right know.

    • @PomuLeafEveryday
      @PomuLeafEveryday 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The most important part is learning libraries for specific languages, now that takes time. Whether it be the plethora of Javascript libraries, or the C++ standard library. No matter what language you use there will be libraries specific to that language that you will have to learn (unless you want to reinvent the wheel, which your employer and colleagues would hate you for).
      You don't need to learn every library, but you can't say you've learned a language until you've learned all the libraries (at least familiar enough to skim documentation) necessary for what you want to do with that language.

    • @PomuLeafEveryday
      @PomuLeafEveryday 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@hazamax2139 Depending on the task, optimization (especially when it's language/compiler specific) is usually an after thought, most companies want you to be able to ship a product in due time than to make perfectly optimized software.
      More important are your general algorithms/problem solving and how well you know the libraries/tech stack for the specific task.
      And then nice general programming practices to keep your boss and colleagues happy with clean readable code.

    Software engineering student here, and yeah. When she said at the end she knows "a little bit of everything", that's pretty much the gist of it.
    For loops are in most languages, but the version she mentioned is most commonly seen in C languages and, ironically, Java. SQL is less of a programming language and more of a database access system, but SELECT is indeed the most important part of it.

    • @dkosmari
      @dkosmari 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@siekensou77 C++ was created as an entirely new language, in the same Bell Labs where C was invented. Stroustrup (the creator of C++) was encouraged (by the creators of C and others) to just borrow C's syntax, while nearly everything else was borrowed from other languages (with worse syntax) or just invented from scratch. Some C++ features were borrowed back into C, like the "const" and "void" keywords. Very quickly, Stroustrup started to get overwhelmed with feature requests from C programmers within Bell Labs, and from outside, because they wanted to write "C-like programs with extra features" and there was no other language that tried to do that. It's the language that most closely resembles an "upgrade to C."
      Java on the other hand started off with Sun asking James Gosling to create a scripting language for certain "smart devices" like TV sets, but later they changed the requirements, and told him it should be a systems language instead. Since it was treated like a product, with release deadlines, that's pretty much what they got, with all versions prior to 1.4 being horrible betas. It survived mostly through a lot of marketing and promises, with Sun hiring "Java Evangelists" in most universities across the world, spending more money on it than on improving the product.
      Java's branding was so "good," that the Netscape scripting language, first known as Mocha, then LiveScript, got rebranded as "JavaScript" after Netscape signed a marketing deal with Sun. The "Java" name was more valuable than the language itself.

      Most likely, she was just shown a variety of code snippets in multiple languages, to see in what way they're similar. Actually teaching COBOL in the 21st century should be a human rights violation.

    java also has ++

    • @dkosmari
      @dkosmari 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually the "++" operator came from the B language (successor to BCPL.) Then C inherited it, and so did every language that was based on C.

      @@siekensou77 no, you can still use ++ in C. The way C++ named is because it's literally an increment of C, not that "++" comes from C++
