      @@awesomedude5558 You don't have to say all lives matter - by default you're saying that when you say black lives matter. Matter is the minimum. When something matters, that means its "worth existing." The fact that saying "black people are worth existing" causes so much outrage proves why it should be said and eliminates the All Lives Matter argument from the equation.

      @Enoemen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@awesomedude5558 Honestly, that's just bullshit. All lives don't really matter in every context. For instance, while shameful we allow the conditions for mass shootings to happen on a daily basis, no one is holding protests if police shoot down those perpetrators because that's a clear case of actually defending the public, and using proportional force. When the Police asphyxiate innocent civilians, ignore complaints of police brutality, and most importantly cover-up the crimes, then yes, people get upset. To say the least.

    I myself am black and I would have to disagree with what is happening. I would understand and agree from a live action sense, don't need another prince of Persia situation/ with white people darkening their skin.
    But the beauty of voice acting is that. Who someone is doesn't matter, if they are able to bring life to a character with the presentation of their words.
    And I would be on board if the character was trying to represent something of black culture in their character, like Huey from the boondocks or Miles.
    But ultimately I don't agree with this , in the long run it may do more harm than good. And prevent Black Va's from doing other ethnic characters.
    I think, what should happen, is more openings and auditions should be held and open to many people, but don't change characters who already been casted.
    This is what kinda makes VA different from regular acting, In regular acting if you wanna hire a different ethnicity, you can bend the character to the actor. But in Voice Acting, You have to bend the Actor To the Character. If the character is not black but the actor is that's not a problem, so long as they can do an old man voice.

    • @corywashington9580
      @corywashington9580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I get where you are coming from and I agree to an extent (as a black individual myself). But there are a lot of creative and talented black actors that get passed up on/not even considered for these roles. It is a nice start having studios at least consider black characters to have black voices.
      In a perfect world it would say this is stupid, but to fight this change is allowing systemic diversity issues to continue. If I saw more examples of black voice actors doing all sorts of characters I would love that. I definitely hate the idea that black voice actors will only be seriously considered/ sought after to play black characters, but maybe getting a foot in the door can lead to more diverse casting opportunities.

    • @corywashington9580
      @corywashington9580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @troy callahan I can't think of a single case where a Black voice actor is playing multiple roles including white characters but I can definitely find the counterfactual. Again, Ideally what you said is great. It is just that reality of hiring doesn't reflect that ideal. Typically with voice acting, they hire a lot of the same people. Sometimes they use references from characters voiced in other series to inform hiring decisions. The issue is that this perpetuates the same inequality (whether that is intentional or unintentional doesn't matter). I am not in the industry myself, but it seems pretty well documented. The best choices for roles can't happen unless you evaluate everyone equally and fairly. Typically it isn't about talent so much as lack of opportunity.

    • @MagillanicaLouM
      @MagillanicaLouM 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@corywashington9580 i think its a more "star power means everything" deal rather a race thing. Everyone keeps mentioning Cree Summer for example, but we know her name. That's not something many voice actors can say. I guarantee if the choice was between her or an unknown of any other race, more often than not they'd want her cause shes proven for decades she's skilled but also, shes been at this for decades. Ppl grew up on her voice, the name will be a big draw. I can name more black names in the industry than Asian (which by this current trend's logic is in even worse shape considering the popularity of anime as of late) and Latino names. But in general, the reason you hear a lot of the same ppl is cause of fame usually.
      And i know just said all of that, but amongst the general public at large, this job is a thankless one. Outside of nerds like us and fandom circles, no one cares who's in the booth. And the logic i used above often works against VA's. If you're making a big block buster movie and wanna sell tickets, and the choice was between Tara Strong or Beyonce, the suits won't care that Tara is a master of her craft, it probably wouldnt be an exaggeration to say she's had millions of roles over her decades spanning career and is beloved by many. But Beyonces name is more beloved 1000x over and would guarantee more hype in marketing with the general population. Isnt Scoob an example of it working against even the VA's most prominent roles? Had the full Scooby doo voice cast at this for years, ready to go and they're overlooked for higher tier celebs.
      Im speaking as a black person, id love for more of us in animation (behind the booth and on-screen) and same for Latinos,Asians etc. But having white actors pass out hand me downs as PR isn't the way for me, id be insulted personally if i were in the business. And maybe location of these studios and population around them is another significant factor no one mentions to all this. It could be in many cases, skilled black actors just... Arent around or available. Not to say that its impossible racists are behind casting, im sure there are some. But then the solution would be to root THEM out not any actors who are just doing their job.

    Finally! I've been looking for a reasonable place to discuss the voice acting thing.
    Disclaimer: I'm Latino and I'm aspiring to be a voice actor someday. I've listened to interviews in the past where DiMaggio, Paulsen, West, Kenney, and so many other greats in the industry talk about the beauty in the craft being that you don't have to be a looker to get the gig. That looks don't matter. I LOVE that. Of course, all those dudes are white.
    It should be on Hollywood, writers and casting directors to not only hire the best people for the job, but to also EXPAND their casting pools to be more inclusive.
    I'm Latino but I sure as shit don't sound like it. And what does that even mean? Don't tell me you haven't heard Childish or Logic rap about not SOUNDING black enough. I wouldn't want to be limited to roles that probably wouldn't be written in the first place. Like, I want to be the one to voice Kaine Parker should he get written into Spider-Verse or the games. I want to be to Kaine what Kevin Conroy is to Batman! I want to do anime roles and THAT'S a whole nother issue.
    Basically I'm all for whoever voicing whoever. But I feel that the onus is on the industry to allow more voice actors of color in in the first place.

    The ride changing is nothing new. They do that all the time. Personally I would prefer they add a Princess and the Frog and keep Splash Mountain the same for a lot of reasons. As for cartoon characters, it should be open for the best person for the job regardless of skin color and doesn't matter what they look like on screen. At the end of the day it's pandering imo and doesn't solve the real issues. Everyone, including black folks, should all feel like we can live our lives without being looked down upon for our skin tone and be properly protected by police when needed. I'm sure some may disagree with that, but I wish we could all get along and enjoy life.

    I find myself so torn on this issue. Becuase I find myself kind of on both sides of the argument.
    I'm biracial - part Black Carribean, part White British. I've been fairly lucky in my 43 years to not get huge amounts of racism pointed at me but I also can't say I've never been affected by it.
    So there is a part of me that is glad that these issues are being addressed. That a character with my skin colour now has a greater chance of being played by an actor with the same, or similar, skin colour.
    But then there's another part of me. The guy who has loved animation since he was a kid. The guy who gets very, very, attached to the voice portrayal of a character. The guy who has never managed to accept replaced voices in cartoons, even if it's down to something like the unfortunate passing of an actor. To me, they rarely ever feel like the "real" character after a change in voice actor.
    Even 30+ years on, there are some characters who I'll still only rate the earlier seasons' version. (Real Ghost Busters' Pete Venkman, I'm looking at you!)
    That's not to say that these current actors stepping away from their old roles isn't the right thing to do. But I'm sure that if I had a favourite character whose actor stepped away for this reason, I know I'd regret the necessity just as much as I accepted it.
    It's an important step but, like most medicine, a bitter pill for some to swallow. However necessary.

    The disclaimer is the way to go; I’ve always respected the Looney Tunes shorts for having those disclaimers especially when it was Whoopi doing them on the... blu ray remasters I think (maybe DVDs)

    That Splash Mountain has had it coming. I seen that coming. Well, I got to experience the ride before it was gone.

      If I’m being honest, out of the three Mountain rides at Disneyland/world, Splash Mountain was usually my least favorite. It’s not terrible, it’s actually very impressive, but personally I loved Space Mountain much more with Big Thunder Railroad being a close second.

      I usually don't like water drop rides so I'm ok with it. I'm not mad about it

    Good stuff Andre. Now we just need the gaming industry to follow the rest of mainstream entertainment in the retroactive reform. Increased positive representation to counteract the many years of media manipulation, the stereotypes it’s created and reinforced. America runs on entertainment, giving legislative incentives to act swiftly
