I had the pleasure of working with Edgar and Johnny from 1959 to 1964 Johnny and i was in the grade in school and we started our first band together and we went on the road with the band caled "It and Them" in 1964 it consisted of Johnny ,Edgar, Norman Samaha. , Issac Peyton Sweat, and myself, David Holliday
I logged in to say just something like that :) This is back in the time when people had real fun, music made by themselves. No digital pre-programmed shit. Lots of analogue electronics yes, but played by real human beings...
I love the minimalist approach to this performance. They're taking turns with the mic between vocals and sax. Too bad the overhead on the drums was not up more, or E.Q.'d to hear the cymbals, but, What a lively and spontaneous performance! . . . and Edgar super multitasking! He's all over the place!
Dan Harman had an incredible career. He wrote a load of hit songs for himself, Edgar Winter and a ton of other artists. He was a wealthy man when he passed.
Wow! No doubt, man! Had no idea. I have 'They Only Come Out at Night' and recall him in the liner notes and pics as a tender 9 year old venturing into the best rock music ever made, early 70's through 80's. Hartman could've sung lead, it appears. Having a solid harmony adds so much.
I saw this group with Rick Derringer on lead guitar but Dan Hartman did play a stratocaster during the show. He played just like Hendrix including the feedback. When he finished he said now thats rock and roll! He was a fantastic player. This was in Tulsa , OK in 1973. Edgar Winter Group was the headliner with Leslie West band w/ Mick Jones and Climax Blues Band opening
I saw them play. The drummer did a solo, Dan Hartman and Ronnie Montrose disappeared back stage. When they came back they had switched instruments and you couldn't tell the difference in the sound.
Chuck Ruff...one of THE most underrated drummers of the 1970's...what a monster......got to chat with him many times before he died and did some work to some of his guitars.......great guy and such a pleasure to talk with......he is missed!
Saw this line up 4 times in 72-73. Couple of times front stage. Most concerts were gen admin so claim your spot fast. Absolutely awesome. Gotta remember rock was really “live” back then. Mostly plug in and play. Montrose was loud and rocked. EW used an AARP 2600 synth, synth were rarely seen/played then, played a piano kb around his neck, timbales, sax. Very tight band. These guys could rock.
Glenn, from Reno here. Knew Ronnie ( not super well...but, he produced my old band Northrup in the late 80's..... a million names that all connect, trust me! lol!) and also had met Chuck Ruff up here many times..... hartman, never met. point is: can't believe this entire backup line behind Winter, is now deceased. just unreal. this was when Music Ruled. R.I.P, Ronnie, Chuck, Dan. your gift will never be forgotten.
I've seen Edgar twice. ... He is HANDS DOWN the most powerful, committed stage performer I've EVER SEEN... and I've seen EVERYBODY. ... He is a FORCE OF NATURE.
@@jaysantos536 Frankenstein is a monster of a song. It's unique, odd, and nasty! Watch the live version they did from the Old Grey Whistle test, it's quite impressive IMO.
First saw Johnny in 8/70 . That was Johnny Winter And, with Rick Derringer on second guitar. Saw Edgar in 72 right after Montrose left and saw Edgar maybe 2 or 3 years later and Derringer was playing with him. Great music everywhere at that time Saw them both an addition 4 or 5 times each. At 75 years old, Edgar is still at it!

He came to Rhode Island once or twice every year.Played at Carpenters in Matunuck R.I. a small beach bar.He was at his best in small clubs.Last time I saw him he sat in a chair he wasn't well but played like a God RIP !
If ONLY I could find a band that not only rocked out like Edgar, Dan, Ronnie, and Chuck do here, but had FUN doing it...THAT...is what Rock n Roll is all about!
They Only Come Out at Night! The original lineup from that classic Edgar Winter album. Fantastic performance, how sad is it that 3 of these 4 guys are no longer with us. Dan Hartman, Ronnie Montrose, and Chuck Ruff RIP!! However, Edgar is still playing that Rock & Roll!!
@Ecphantus the Pythagorean I don't care what either you or the OP says. This song isn't even from "They Only Come Out At Night", and Rick Derringer is nowhere to be seen here.
Holy F*ck!! When was the last time you saw a guy sing, play keyboards AND saxophone - all in the same song,...LIVE?!! And the bassist was Dan Hartman, who had a great voice and had a number of his own hit songs (Disco Songs!!) - and also became a successful Producer and Songwriter. Dan died in 1994- RIP Dan.
My 1st concert.....October 1972. Nassau Coliseum. This incarnation of the band opened for 10 years after. I was a 13 year old kid. When I saw Edgar scat sing in Tobacco Road I was hooked on these guys. As a young and beginning drummer, I was mesmerized by Chuck Ruff head banging...hitting cymbals with reckless abandon and his terrific blond mop of hair flying everywhere. To this day, I remember that concert.
Ronnie, you're the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place! Now you're upstairs playin' with your peers. Gone too soon, but never forgotten brother!!! RIP...
Of course, it's hard to see any musicians die, but in Montrose's career he played with a pretty damn good set of musicians. I'm glad his career was so Star-Spangled!!! RIP Ronnie!

Dan Harman had an incredible career. He wrote a load of hit songs for himself, Edgar Winter and a ton of other artists. He was a wealthy man when he passed.
Steven Reiss Hartman was also a Hendrix style Strat player. He and Ronnie would swap over for a song or two and Hartman would kill it.
