Getting rid of genetic diseases and deformities is one thing, because we fairly well know what the characteristics of a normal healthy human are; adding "enhancements" is something else again, because we *don't* know what all the resulting characteristics will be. For example, taller people tend to have more back problems, and earlier in life, than average-sized people do. What might be the drawbacks of having that "enhanced" memory? Or having greater muscularity?
As long as we think a high IQ is the ultimate virtue in human life, lets not go there. Will get it WRONG

One question no one bothered to ask: What is a Human Being? What are the characteristics of a person that qualifies them as humans? Scientists are idiots with a god complex, they maybe understand 1% of how the human body works and already think they can outsmart Evolution.
My main concern, I think, is that it depends on how many mistakes the geneticists make? And how the rest of society is effected by those mistakes. Tinkering with the human body seems perhaps less of an issue than any non civilised cavemen killing each other for example, but the potential for huge mistakes could perhaps be devastating? How proteins bind with each other and fold is important. Is that something that "survival if the fittest" covers? I do not know enough to understand what unintended consequences could occur but would be glad to be informed.

Furthermore, since females bear children it is better if their be more males in relation to females. When female numbers go down the generational increase is lowered. In fact, it would be both fair and wise for each breeding female to have only one child until we get our population numbers down. With the breeders having only one child, each new generation will be cut in half.
As a species, we will not prosper if we don't keep our population numbers much lower. This is because our Earth has finite food and water resources. That means famine and thirst will result when there are too many people for the resource availability.
The health of ecosystems also requires that our invasive species is completely excluded or highly limited in many of them. With our advanced technology's effect on nature through pollution each human has a much greater negative impact than if we lived under totally natural constraints. The nearest habitable planet is many light years away and we don't have the technology or resources to ever reach there for the foreseeable future.

see, thats one of the few valid criticisms of eugenics (even if done liberal and through a functioning healthcare system). One of the biggest problems really would be that our societal view of what characteristics are preferable are heavily influenced by what already is succesful without questioning if that's really the most reasonable allocation of power. For example: black children that are put up for adoption are less likely to get loving parents then any other ones (because they are less likely to be adopted). Obviously that is not because being black is a less desireable trait in relation to how you could function as a human, but because as a society we still hang on to the power structures that stigmatised being black with other negative traits.
Therefore, until we fixed stigma and prejudice, or found another solution (which I propose is through being able to decide on what strenghts the child should have/ what illnesses it should not suffer, but giving all other factors up to chance (yes, I include color of skin to that)), that technology might still be too risky for humanity.

@@leelarson107 see, thats a great point. 'Lesser breeds' are something we can't quite rule out for now, since our technology isn't quite there yet. Though even if we had the tech, what would be the end goal? To ensure there's no one lesser by only breeding desirable traits we might end up (worst case scenario) with only having clones, which is a whole other set of problems.

@@nickieglazer33 Today's eugenics is different to 50 years ago. It's not about genocide, not about ethnic cleansing or racial superiority. It's about enhancing humans globally, collectively. Since humans aren't evolving quick enough for the better, we need genetic engineering to evolve ourselves. We need not more people on earth, we need more quality humans. Yes it may be unfortunate that the technologies will be available to those with money and the working class may have to struggle but things can correct itself as more of the working class will be inclined to have kids. Those who can work their asses off and change their circumstances will be able to afford the technologies. Or perhaps some kids will learn to make the tech more accessible to the masses. Our generation will fade and the new generation of enhanced humans will roam the earth and out to other planets. We must be humble and accept that just like the early hominids, we the genetically non artificially engineered will phase out too. Rather than the extinction of our species, adaptation and evolution. Let's just be humble about phasing out.
