In September & October of 1971, I spent 5 weeks on the Island, including one wonderful week alone. I still have the book about the island '20 Years of Growing', & I stayed in Peg Sayers house. Thank You for taking me back.
The woman would throw stones at the bailiffs because the islanders would generally have little in the way of rent and so the the baliffs would often take the islands livestock or even newly made cloths as way of payment, this rent was due to the earl of Desmond. Thomas O'Crohan mentions in his books that the islanders would sometimes herd all the islands livestock to the far west of the island to hid them from the baliffs.
This is truly amazing. In 1999 I spent a night on the Blaskets in the hostel. This could be me and my experiences( we even share the name) the seals, the village, the pasta meal, I even met Sue and spoke about dying she used natural dyes to dye her wool, I worked in a synthetic computer run dye house in England. I had an amazing incident with some guys herding sheep on the island. My night on the island is probably the best night I spent in all of my walking around the west of Ireland. Thanks for this ,I've been transported back to a truly memorable time .
I really enjoyed this one, you are a fantastic story teller. You are doing these stunning and more remote parts of Ireland justice with your stories and the footage that you capture. Absolutely fantastic, safe travels Derek 👍👍
Ive lived most of my adult life. 29yrs. Ive missed living in Ireland at various times. Now have watched your video Im home sick again and long to travel the length and breath of Ireland 🇮🇪. Thanks for the lovely film. God bless you. 🎉
Derek, I'll be there in just a couple of weeks--a lifelong dream. (I've waited over sixty years!) I loved your video--beautiful and poignant and informative. Can't wait to see it in person. Slán!
Nice…I like your presentation style, camera work, and insights. We spend a week just across from the islands on the mainland every year. It’s a magical place.
I’ve just read the island man and loved it. Your video was amazing and give me a bit more understanding of the book by showing my the school and Thomas house. Thank you very much ☘️🐺☘️
I find the Blasket Islands the most amazing part of our country truly, fair play! Loved to hear a bit of thousands are sailing too, nice one!! Glad to hear a shout out to all the wonderful literature from Blasket Mór!!!
It is great to know the seals can travel from the British Isles and Ireland freely because of the common travel area agreement between the two islands.(Joking.) But what a cracking island. I love the sound of the wind coming inland from the sea. So so beautiful. Thankyou for sharing. It is a shame to hear the islands population disappearing.
I will definitely visit the Blasket Islands some day. I, unlike many others loved Peig Sayers book in school so much that I bought the translated version the first chance I got. I have read most of the Islanders books and was so delighted to see inside Tomás's house in your fantastic video. Well done Derek. Brilliant five star stuff.
Hey Derek loving the adventure. Kerry looks so mystical and you are really capturing it's beauty. I was wondering how you cope with recovery after such tough days pounding the roads especially in the heat. Have you ever tried rubbing magnesium spray into your leg muscles after all the exertion. I find it very beneficial after exercise and really helps with fatigue. It also aids stiffness. Maybe someone to consider. Keep her lit 👍
Hi Nigel! Thanks a lot, I just make sure I eat well and stay hydrated. Many hikers stop drinking water after the actual walk but it’s important to keep drinking water. Otherwise I let the body build up resistance in the early days and do whatever feels comfortable - don’t feel any need to do more than that for my recovery but everyone is different 👍👍
Informative video not just about the island but about you too. I think this is your most thought producing one to date and keep your romantic notion and share them. And RTE - give this man a job.
Today? there’s only some Irish speaking areas in the west. It’s taught at school but most Irish people no longer have much of the language. I myself am trying to relearn as I go 👍
@@DerekCullenOutdoors there are many Gaelscoileanna and that number is increasing annually. My own son who is 11 is in Gaelscoil Moshilog Gorey. I've recently done a couple of refresher courses with gaelchultúr.. If I had told my 17 year old self I'd be paying for Irish lessons later in life 🤣...

You're some film maker lad. I watch you regularly, you make such emotive films. Happy and safe travels. Love from Kernow.
Cheers ! Lovely to hear this - I put a lot into them while trying not to overproduce them 👍

Absolutely amazing video. Dialogue and filming. Great stuff
I think school ruined Peig for me, but you managed to put a small spark back with your video. Bere island still has folks living on it.
Haha yes it’s still alive but forget these people and that way of life and it’s gone forever :)
I'm just getting tuned into this now

An earthly paradise, for the fit & healthy.
Amazing vid Derek, thanks
OUTSTANDING…THANK YOU ! ! !
Brilliant video and fair play to you. Unreal, it’s fantastic
Nobody says we don't have beaches in Ireland.
Derek, how do the sheep survive the winters without people living on the island? I know the weather can be brutal.
Very interesting👍👍
Thank you, very interesting. What is the background music?
A friend he meets for coffee on a previous video composed it I think, really suits the video's!
That’s right, my friend Anthony furey composed it 😊
Lovely video buddy.
Thank you for your videos
Great video.

Great history. Could you stay. How much washing powder would you need😍
The biggest box was the cheapest so I took that one 😂😂
Hey, what's the best way to get out to the blaskets if you're planning on camping there
Boat from dingle bay
Wonderful!
Class.
Is the song Anto made for these videos available on iTunes?
No it’s not. You want to buy it? 👏
