All my clubs are second hand, with the exception of my wedges (Kirkland Signature, which I love).
Actually, I do have one other bought new. I picked up a Wilson D5 fairway wood as an end-of-stock special with a view to giving it to my son. Then I hit it, and thought "nope, he's not having it, it's mine!" 😏⛳

Hi Simon, I snagged a second hand set of lightly used Ping G400 5-U, Driver 4 hybrid and Glide 3.0 54° eye sole sw from a guy that “wasn’t trusting” the equipment because it was all Regular flex shafts he bought it off the rack. I was able to buy everything for $500 USD - nippon R flex shafts in irons and ping stock graphite in the rest. I’m a high handicapper and this setup is not only easy to hit its light years beyond the secondhand junk I was buying on eBay.

Play to confidence. Use clubs that give you confidence when looking down on them no matter what people say. I'm using old dci oversize black triangle from 25 years ago because I feel like I can hit them and that feeling is worth more than anything

I love this video so much. I was a brand new golfer a little over a year ago and where I got it right was I bought an inexpensive set of blades that were beyond my skill level. I don’t have a distance ego so any driver pretty much suited me and my wedge and putting game have always been mysteriously strong. Now that I have practiced a ton, hitting something on the newer side seems a breeze and I’m really enjoying my time on the golf course. First round I shot was 132 and now shooting high 80s. I plan to keep at it and get that down while really having a lot of fun :)
A good rule of thumb is to play the lightest, most flexible shaft that creates your desired ball flight. Park your ego, just because Scottie Scheffler can swing hard enough to flex a Ventus Black X-stiff shaft, doesn't mean you can. I played a pickup round at a local club. One of the guys the starter grouped with me was 55 and had been talked into buying some titanium shafts in his woods. I watched him hit low, weak pushes off the tee all day. I was late 20s and tried smoked his 3 wood 75 yards past him. He was not exactly pleased when I told him what the problem was.
Good advice as always Simon👍. As a new golfer I bought a cheap package set and the desire to buy “better” to fix my problems is strong…but then I realize after hitting a good shot 1/5 that the equipment is better than I am lol
Keep working at it. That 1 in 5 will become 3 in 10, then 2 or 3 out of 5 before you know it. It's almost certainly not the clubs at the beginner golfer level.
My first clubs were from Sports Direct at £60 for a full set. As soon as I got serious I was told I needed a 1/2 inch extra shaft length. I bought a set of Taylormade TP Muscle Cavity irons. Learned to hit those but they were hard so bought a set of second hand Mizuno 919 hot metal pros in the same specs off ebay and completely changed my game. Still got a hand-me-down ping G25, set of second hand Vokey wedges off eBay and a white hot Rossie from eBay I bought when I was drunk. Entire bag is £600 and each club is better than I can become.
On the shaft topic, I hit my bladed 7 iron 165 and still use a regular shaft, I prefer that softer feel when I swing with my irons personally
Wanted to upgrade my sons irons from cleveland cg4 tour irons to cobra forged tec irons ..He stopped me said it would ruin his progress...was dumbstruck because I think I wanted soemthing new and shiny for me more than him...I think he was right...thanks Simon

I just purchased 3 Callaway big Bertha gold....... With ladies graphite shafts.... Lets just say. There beasts smaller shaft on the lower lofted clubs seems to work for me
Ive just brought a package set from decathlon but with graphite shafts as its been months and the steel shaft version is still out of stock and i just wana start my golf journey.
Bloody good points. Lessons and techniques will bet new clubs all day long. Imagine how many lessons u get for £400
Following step 5 is hard as a lefty, but great advice all around!
My tips for 25+ hcp:
- buy second hand, get clubs that have a shaft, installed preferraby as well as a club head and a grip, installed also to make a club.
- buy refurb balls. Get the ones that are white, clean and round.
- Driver optional.
- Play with said equipment for 2-3 seasons.

I have my Titleist Dci 762 and got fitted for them when I was 17 handicap and still have them never felt the need to change them. Don't play as much as I used to these days due to work but I am a 9 handicap golfer now. My tip is always get fitted around 1 and half hours will save you loads of money. Plus it a free service
Great advice Simon I only buy pre-owned clubs. I bought a mixed set of Cobra irons F9 forged TEC an muscle backs for 300 U.S and I love them. That way when I sell them I'll make some money on the deal.
I took tip 3 to heart this year... last year I bought a 50 and 56 MP-T4 off Facebook for very good rates (the 56 had never been hit and was £30...). I'd got tired of my old wedges and just couldn't hit the set SW from the fairway... However, spin forward a year I now carry the MP-T4 56 for fairway use and the set SW to hit out of the bunkers, love it and can't get rid of it - it may feel like a shovel from the fairway but I can always put it close out of a bunker. Definteiyl no need to take useful clubs out of the bag, even if carrying a 56 and SW seems a bit overkill!
I have not long took the game back up, I went 2nd on a full set of Nike slingshot 4d irons including 2 hybrids a covert driver and method putter for a great price hoping they serve me well
I was handed used Irons, 30 years old from Kmart basically. Given a nice driver and putter. Driver had a light regular shaft and my swing speed made it hard to control the face. Upgraded to a used one and had a stiff shaft installed. Found a cheap putter that feels good and fits. Bought a used iron set and trying to get used to them. I don't blame my clubs when they are not the problem. Which now they are not. I have good clubs now, it's up to me.
Taylormade SLDR driver with 65 gram stiff, 97 mph swing speed
Callaway x2hot 4-pw steel stiff shaft
Ping 410 3 wood, 65 gram stiff
Warrior 5 wood
Epic 7 wood
Warrior 60 degree
Integra 52 degree.
I may drop my 4 iron and get a 56 degree. I am 49 and in shape but I don't really use my 4 iron. Golf is fun and gapping clubs changes. I bought the 3 and 7 woods used and waiting for them to arrive. I want to see if the 7 wood is better for me than the 4 iron and fits the gapping. Then I can put another wedge in the bag. The 52 is too much and the 60 is not enough when it comes to certain shots for me as a beginner. Good tips!
Nice nice tips. Apologies this might be long lol.... To #5 I am mid-high handicapper and have only ever bought 2 sets of irons new....1 was when I got back into the game and did find a great deal on a new set of rogue x irons online. This was at the start of Covid so prices were down but here in the states we could still golf.
Now I played 10-15 rounds with them and didn't like the overall feel. Once shops opened fully I took them in and got on a sim and was told some tweaks that they could make to them without too much $$$$. Change lie angle and shorten them by 1/2in. I contemplating it for a while and continued to play them but I really just didn't like them. By then the markets started opening back up so I listed them for sale with thoughts of getting something else maybe to the specs I was recommended.
As Covid opened prices went up and the market for lefties was and still is in full swing. Ended up selling them for a $150 profit and purchased the set I am still using Maltby STi2 irons which I love.
Since that I always kept my eyes open for deals I can land and try out and if I don't get along with the purchase I try flipping for profit or to at least gain back what was spent. So far been pretty successful. Would you recommend anything like this to a newer golfer?? It does patience as you full well know.

Wish i had this insight and more patience last summer. Bought rogue x irons off rack. Good clubs but light high spinning shafts aren't suited for my swing speed so bought again this summer. Also guilty of blindly ordering long clubs online based on what i believe i need. Been lucky on that end though as my choices of lofts and stock shafts have worked out.
Been using my dad cheap Prodrive club set for years and have been unable to break 105.. just got myself some secondhand ping s57's and instantly down and almost breaking 90. (Half the club head size and slightly longer) hit them straight every time! Now to fix the putting haha

Simon, you should do a video on refurbished golf balls vs. New balls, similar to your lake ball video. Reason why is I just bought a 24 pack of refurbished "ProV1s" for $24 in the states and upon further inspection I could see that under the repainted top layer the ball was actually a taylormade, and printed as a Titleist ProV1.

I just tested a few irons with my coach, im fairly green but i hit long. I noticed you said shafts werent that important and i dont fully agree. Of the maybe 5 shafts we tested with a bunch of irons there was one that i did significantly better with. So i think a shaft could greatly impact performance
the last two sets of irons I've bought are Ping eye 2's BECU and Ping eye2's 1st generation made in 1981

biggest thing I've learned is the new clubs and technology won't fix your issues.. I spent a lot of money on clubs when I first started and honestly wish I had started with an older "pro" style of irons and learned how to truly find the center and flush it..
I had chunky monkey clubs and got away with a lot of bad shots because.. I got to a point were I thought I had earned the right for more player irons and I couldn't hit them.. ended up selling them at a loss.
fitting has helped a bunch for me too I'm tall and need some longer clubs with different lie angles. end of rant, but great video bro. I really love this channel it's amazing cheers from the US!

Simon, weeks ago you said you were going to do a Hogan video. There are frankly offensively low priced Hogan iron sets out there, they are so unfashionable! You should spread the gospel.
Simon, fell for the beginner trick and went for the muscle back type irons about a year ago. In my 20s, my swing speed has improved significantly aswell as distance but as you said control is a problem! Would you have any recommendations on iron sets I could bag for a few years?
Mizuno Forged, Callaway Apex DCB, Titleist T300 are the clubs that I was looking at in the same bracket of, workable forgiving Irons. I ended up going with the Mizuno and I'm loving them
So I’ve been playing for three years and I’m a former rugby player. I’ve been using regular flex but just checked my swing speed and it’s 110 mph (still don’t have a consistent straight drive)… what benefits would I get from changing the stiffness?
How are things coming together with your second hand fitting? Sanford springs giving you the space and freedom to start it up and get the players down (saying down solely because I’m from the north/Glasgow)

Small pro shops try and sell you clubs from their own limited range usually Ping ,Titleist or Taylormade.
Simon the tip , Don’t buy without hitting it. Does that apply to the PXG driver. Or is the deal to good to miss?

I learned early on that I care more about my wedges then I do my 3 wood and hybrid. I carry certain wedges for different reasons.
What irons would you suggest for a beginner looking to spend around the 100 to 150 mark. I can hit it far but more often than not its well off to the right. When I was playing last Sunday one of the guys said the clubs I have (old and given to me for free) were almost blades and if I got a set of cavity backs I'd be a lot better
I'm pretty new to golf, playing only 3 years, and i'm a 4.7 handicap on a 144 slope course. The biggest issue i see in the game is ego. I disagree about control with cavity clubs, i play with G410's have done since being a 21 handicap 2 years ago and they play consistent meaning more enjoyment and less time at the range. The problem is people get fitted over one day and are hitting shots with no repercussion, get 99% of golfers on a course in a comp and see if they nut the 7 iron 190. Ignore the number on the bottom and make sure lofts are gapped properly. Pick a shaft to grow into, not the club.
I made the mistake of buying a set of irons off eBay without ever seeing them. They were almost exactly as advertised, but they listed the flex as a stiff flex. After receiving them, I found out they are x-stiff. I lost some distance and hit about 15 yards right of line consistently. I’ve considered reshafting them, but it would cost as much as I payed for them to do. Would you recommend going to a shop and trading for a different set of second hand clubs, or re shaft the ones I have now?

If been using the same irons now since they came out. Wilson D100. At the moment wouldn't change them for anything. I do have a set of Ping i3+ 4 to SW in Great condition and new grips I don't use if anyone's interested.

What irons would you recommend me at a handicap for 14.1 I currently have taylormade burners in the bag but the 5 iron has no cavity back in it was broken when I received the clubs
