I understand where Sakurai is coming from about Ridely's size. The emotions conveyed by Ridley are greatly influenced by his size compared to everything around it. Downsizing him would remove that feeling.

I love Sakurai but his reason's are just... confused.
maribakumon And yet Ganondorf who is always twice as tall as Link was shrunk down for Smash (that would make him like over 10ft tall in his human form assuming Link is the same size as the average adult Japanese man at 5ft6).
That and he says he wouldn't want the character to not be Ridley anymore but he's totally fine having Ganondorf be a Captain Falcon clone for every version of Smash, only using his sword for a taunt...

Commentator Chris Not really, a scaled down Ridley who's still the biggest character in the game AND fights like a ferocious beast would be far better than The King of Evil just being a slower fatter Captain Falcon, a character from a completely unrelated series to Zelda.
Size alone doesn't really mean anything in Smash and Sakurai has even pointed this out himself saying how Kirby is only 8 inches tall and Olimar is no bigger than a bottle cap...yet he has an issue with Ridley. Sakurai has some warped logic regarding the game, like how Ridley can't be in now because he was a boss before, or how Ganon can't have his moveset changed now because he's been like that since Melee, or Jigglypuff still being in the game despite how she's no longer a relevant Pokemon just because she was in the first Smash, the fact both 3ds and WiiU rosters MUST be the same despite having no crossplay function and knowing the limits of the 3ds making some characters impossible to include. Hell the only reason Ice Climbers were cut were due to technical difficulties with 3ds limitations (Same reason Zelda/Shiek's got split into separate characters) Sakurai only changes things if he physically is limited by a gaming system, it's all about his logic and his game more than what the actual fans of Nintendo want or what best represents each franchise.

Actually, recently the Japanese website for Melee was translated. Sakurai said for Ganon, the model for him had the same dimensions as Captain Falcon, so due to time restrictions he made Ganon a clone.

The mighty Zekenator my point is that Ridley is is comapred to Samus since he from here universe while olimar have only himself. The NES version was due to technical which is why every version of Ridley even in the remake if it zero mission is bigger also Ganon being 2 metres is far less than Ridley height essentially since he humannod which is easier to look norml, I am not mad that Ridley in ssbu but that he look wierd at that size when compared to Samus since he bigger than her vastly in every incarnation except the NES
Don't even say it was technical limitations because that's bull crap. Remember Mega Man 1987? That had Yellow Devil, Mecha Dragon, and the Wileu Machine which were all giant bosses and came out only a *year* after the original Metroid. So that argument again doesn't hold up.

Its different. Much of the emotions and Nostalgia, the sense of threat and power around Ridley is his size and brute strength.

Temmie is best Temmie Now that this is relevant I feel like I need to point out some things. Let's compare Ridley to Rayquaza since they're both dragons. Now let's say you shrink Rayquaza OK? He has a snake like appearance so resizing it would make it look like a baby snake. Now let's look at Ridley. A menacing giant creature that murdered Samus Aran's parents. We shrink Ridley and now they're toe to toe in size and Ridley looks like a baby. Tell me how taking a small humanoid character compares to a dragon being downscaled.
"What's Up With Marth" would be a good one, not enough people have played Fire Emblem, and even fewer have played anything besides Awakening, and fewer still have played a game featuring Marth.

The original games with Marth are kinda dated, but there are two remakes featuring Marth for the DS: Shadow Dragon and Heroes of Light and Shadow, but only Shadow Dragon was released in the US. You can download a fan-translated version of Heroes and play it using a flash cart. It's incredibly good and one of my favorite Fire Emblems.
Most people mainly recognize Marth from Smash. Roy is also in Smash, but Roy has literally only appeared as a playable character in a single Fire Emblem game, Binding Blade, and that was never released in the US (unless you count Awakening DLC), but he appears as a little kid in Blazing Sword, which Blazing Sword includes Lyn as a main protagonist who appears as an assist trophy in both Brawl and Smash 4.

Unshaved Stuff This series' origin, the Waluigi video, covers a character I'd say is even less obscure than Ridley. Ridley is a major character in that universe that I feel like wasn't given too much explanation in the handful of Metroid games I've played. I like Salted Snail's version where the characters in question are meant to be more unexplained than actually unknown. I'd much rather see a video about someone like Klungo from Banjo Kazooie than Jojora from Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga.

Colin Parlett If you don't mind for a...mostly shortened...explanation, I can give you one for Dedede:
Essentially, he's a foil for Kirby, and possibly one of the best examples of a non-edgy anti-villain in video games.
And what do I mean by foil? Well, Kirby is a glutton, yes. He devours all the food he can find, but is willing to share with those in need. Dedede, by comparison, is extremely greedy; as the other big eater, he loves food just as much as Kirby, but he's willing to go as far as steal it from others in order to have it all. The same can be seen with Kirby's bravery, vs Dedede's cowardice, Kirby's strong willpower vs Dedede's 'ability' to be controlled by evil, among other traits shown in the series.

That all said, Dedede /technically/ isn't a villain. With the exception of the one time Dedede stole all the food in dreamland (he was really hungry), Dedede has never actually been the true antagonist. In Dreamland 2? Dedede was just possessed by Dark Matter, an all consuming entity trying to possess EVERYONE. Same deal in Dreamland 3...and Kirby and the Crystal Shards. Kirby's Adventure/ Nightmare in Dreamland? Dedede wasn't evil, he did what any ruler does in a time of crisis and made a tough decision: destroy the star rod to prevent Nightmare from killing everyone, and he fights you to prevent you from freeing Nightmare...even though it's the only way to destroy Nightmare once and for all.
From this point on, basically every time you fight Dedede, it's because he's been possessed (by Necrodeus in Mass Attack, Yin Yarn in Epic Yarn, Taranza in Triple Deluxe), or he's one of the playable characters as with Return to Dreamland and Canvas Curse.
TL;DR Version: Dedede isn't really a villain, but rather he serves as a foil for Kirby's character in order to enunciate his positive traits. Kirby is a glutton, yes, but he'll always share with those in need (compared to the greedy Dedede). etc. And if you count up the number of times Dedede is the ACTUAL villain of the game, and not just a mind-controlled boss/misunderstood protagonist, you'll be surprised to note that it totals to 1 game: Kirby's Dream Land/ Spring Breeze (the remake of Dream Land in Kirby Super Star).
Colin Parlett Dedede is a self proclaimed king so it's natural he'd beat up anyone who said other wise. Meta Knight on the other hand is kinda odd, in Super Star Ultra they do give him a reason for him being a villain and that is because he's tired of Dreamland's lazy lifestyle so he builds a giant battleship to spice things up, other times he just wants to fight someone sword to sword and other times he just wants to help Kirby.

If we get another Metroid character in Smash, it needs to be another bounty hunter. Metroid Prime 3 and Metroid Prime: Hunters give Samus plenty of other rival/ally bounty hunters, so I think Nintendo could make at least one of them work
+Gold Wade I nominate Sylux. He showed up in multiple games (if you count the cameo in Prime 3), and the developers have said that they want to put him in a new game too. It would make sense.

Yes, I absolutely agree. I think either Sylux or Weavile would make the the perfect fit (though my personal favorite hunter in the game is Kanden, due his design and play-style in multiplayer.) That said, I don't think it was ever officially confirmed that was Sylux's ship at the end of Prime 3, was it?

Like, Ridley is the reoccurring main rival and being responsible for making Samus who she is, Dark Samus being the constant threat and overall final boss of the Prime Series. They both should be playable but aren't for legitimately awful reasons,, one because trash-tier memes and the other because who needs Dark *SAMUS* when we can have Dark PIT AMIRITE!?!
Sylux was in like two games and a secret ending, he hasn't really done anything comparable to the other two.

While I know it is highly unlikely for Ridley to be playable in Smash bros. for Wii U, it is not impossible. Yes he is already a stage boss, but let me remind you that Ridley is the clone Ridley and the original Ridley can still be playable. Also Duck Hunt appears in a stage, and a playable character. As does Donkey Kong, but wait that wasn't THIS Donkey Kong right? So that point must be wrong right? He says it wouldn't be Ridley, not representing him well. Well Mario isn't represented that well either, he can throw fire in his normal form. Not enough for you? Look at Kirby, able to use many of his copy abilities without inhaling any enemies. Still not enough? Ganondorf isn't represented that well either, using many physical attacks and very little of his original attacks. So there goes that argument too. Like I said I know there is a 99.999999999% chance he won't be a DLC character, but it's not impossible.

BalaTheHero9 i know the interview, but the fact of the matter is that sakurai contradicts himself quite a lot especially in that interview. he states he wants to stay to character, but every character in the game has at least one thing non canon about them
It has nothing to do with being canon, it has to do with being a fleshed out, inspired character. They are still them, and all of their attacks, taunts, and attributes are consistent to what they look like and how u would expect them to play (except ganon, but eh...). Ridley would be shrunk down (not just a little, immensely), and his moves would no longer be inspired due to the fact he's smaller now (and most of his attacks he used have to do with the fact he's big)
***** do you even play metroid? he mostly uses his tail or fireballs to attack so it wouldnt matter and again, look at the bagan ridley mod. it shows that it doesnt look weird at all for any moves even the one where he grabs and drags

I would argue that Meta Ridley isn't even the real Ridley, and is just a better, more lifelike version of Mecha Ridley from Zero Mission. As for coming back in Super Metroid, I have no clue. Maybe he just survived the fight, maybe Ridley, like Xenomorphs, are just really fricking hard to kill off. Maybe his body regenerates like Piccolo from DBZ. Fuck if I know. Ridley has probably left DNA somewhere that can again be cloned. Or hell, maybe there are just others of his species, and he sends them off to die in his place. Who really knows.

metaridley is the original. Maybe the space pirates enhanced him with some of the mecha ridley parts or at least used that as an idea.
Sending clones of Ridley, created only as killing machines, to die in his place (or make believe he is still alive while not) ...That would not even be such a big surprise coming from space pirates. That would also explain why they don't just create an army of mecha-Ridleys since it's an iconic figure.
